We just got back on Saturday after a week at HH. The new naturalist was nice- sweet. A little bit "older" than the last two guys. My DD7 and DS9 did the Marsh Walk last Saturday and enjoyed it- they "caught" crabs and ran around and learned about wildlife. Came back with lots of good info. She was very sweet and understanding with my DD, who is hearing impaired. Helped her out a lot since she can't wear her hearing aids while in the marsh. I also saw her walking a group of CM's around and was showing them various plants and was talking about collecting berries to make some bread/cobbler. Didn't interact with her personally, but things seemed to be up and running as far as "nature" stuff goes.
The activities were great- we did campfire on Friday night/Sun night (watch out for that Shark Attack song, gets stuck in your head!);younger 2 kids did the marsh walk on Saturday, my DD7 did the unbirthday party on Sunday, did gyotoku (fish shirt painting) on Mon. and DD7 did kids night out Monday night (went to see Charlie and the Chocolate FActory) while DH, DD17, DD13 and DS9 did a kayak tour. The kids and CMs were a little late getting back, when they did arrive the CM announced that he had lost all our children- and there was much cheering and celebrating. He looked a little taken aback! Tuesday did the BBQ/pool games (those were GREAT); Wednesday did the dolphin tour- Brian was our guide and was wonderful. Saw lots of dolphins, including Blackbeard and Nick. Thursday was spent in Savannah (oldest DD17 interviewed at SCAD). I think that was all.....we also spent Sunday afternoon and Tuesday at Hunting Island state park. Its east of Beaufort and just before Frick Island- about 1.5 hours away. What a great hidden treasure-great beach, great marsh walks, not too crowded. Kids had a great time, especially at the light house. Beach house was great. Didn't make it to the shrimp boil, because of DD's college interview in Savannah. Maybe next year!
Disney doesn't "sponsor" the kayaking anymore- just gave us a couple of brochures. Not sure which my DH and kids did, but they had a great time. Started at a marina next to old oyster factory, paddled up broad creek, down towards the bridge and then home. Not too expensive either, about $20 a head.
Ate at Crazy Crab (good food, lousy service- but I think it was an off night), Nick's, British Open Pub, a gullah food place near Beaufort, and a little cafe next to Nick's seafood. Ordered chinese to be delivered from the "yummy cafe" place. Bad food, bad wait (3 hours!). Oh well, don't go to HH for chinese food. The cafe that is run by the students at SCAD in Savannah was incredible- hope to go back there. All in all, the food was great.
The lifeguards and naturalist were great- say hey to Gregor (nicknamed hottie scottie by my oldest DDs for obvious reasons) and Krystal for us! All the life guards are SO patient with the kids! They deserve medals. The front desk CM's were very, well, green. Didn't have accurate answers (where is a good seafood stand, driving directions to Oyster factory) and had trouble cashing a travellers check. But were very nice and tried hard. Only "problem" was our trash and towel- the CM met us as we were coming down the stairs, handed us a stack of towels, and walked away. We went back up and put them away- no "tidy-ing" and no trash. Kinda weird- but we didn't really care. Traffic on HH was awful, but better than expected, it was hot but who cares at the the beach.
Can't wait to go back- looks like we may be going back lots, as my DD had a good portfolio review and fell in love with SCAD. Guess we may be buying more points at HH!
PM me if you want more detail on activities. We had a blast. Kept very busy, but had down time too! Oh, I wish I were still there!
