Anyone into the Tortuga rum cakes?

I first had one in 2005 while in Jamaica and I thought they were pretty good. I've purchased a few here and there over the years from eBay and Amazon.



While I was in Grand Cayman recently, I figured I might as well pick up a couple because they're cheaper, but I came across this sign. I couldn't recall what I paid previously over the years but the sign said "special" so I was like


They made it sound like you were getting a great deal-and you should given you're overseas and duty free but compare them to even the prices on Amazon. They're around the same price or even lower with prime. Some even have coupons to save even more.

So I got a 6 pack for $30 from the port as they're small and easily pack in your luggage to take home. They're about the same price on Amazon right now with a $2 off coupon.

I also ordered a 2 pack of the 16oz banana for $34 from Amazon. The Amazon store also has the 16-ounce in chocolate and . The place in Grand Cayman would've charged me $18 each.

So I guess the lesson here is to do a bit of research before you buy them while in port. The prices are basically the same if not better online and you don't have to worry about leaving extra space in your luggage for shipping them back. I saw people loading up a bunch of them to take home while in port.

It is a special over there because everything is almost 1,5 times or 2 times more expensive in Cayman Island vs the US and sometimes more.

Look it up on the internet and you'll see how different is the cost of living over there. (Ex: Meals at McDonald's are about 4$ more expensive. Beer 4$ more, etc.) ... It's kinda crazy.

We used to have a store here that would stock them at Christmas for stocking stuffers. My kids thought it was cool to get them (hey, we got these in Cayman!), but the chocolate one was so dense we never finished it! I preferred the coconut, but not enough to order one from home.

I get that but (for me personally) ordering stuff online is definitely not as fun. Ordering a rum cake online is not the same as eating it "in the Cayman Islands" or on the ship as you get back from Cayman. Saving 2 $ is nice but even if I can eat key lime pie at home, it's definitely not the same as eating key lime pie at Blue Heaven in Key West.

You can also get them at Costco and the PX now. ;-) But I can't get the rum in my state so that's what I stock up on.

Thanks a lot! After reading this thread last night, I jumped on amazon and ordered one (banana of course).

On a side note, last year in Nassau as we were returning to the ship I was looking for one. We spent a lot of time looking in all the shops trying to find if anyone had them. I finally gave up as I wanted to get back on the ship. I did end up finding them at MCO, but I wish I had known it was this easy to get them, LOL!

The Tortuga shop is right in the port (Fredericks Street almost at the corner of Woodes Rodgers Walk). Just a short 1 min walk from the Welcome Center. (Yes, I go every single time LOL)

I think I like the pineapple more than the banana. The key lime is great as well.

Love these cakes. I think we have only not tried the coconut and banana flavors, because hubby hates them. Our favorite is coffee, but chocolate and key lime are great too. I have even made them at home. You can use more rum when you make it at home. Drizzle rum on top and also make a rum butter sauce. My mom and I once made rum cake and ended up using a whole bottle for one cake Good Times!

I didn't know about the coffee one either, I will have to try it.
DH and I saw that Amazon sells them and Lucky's Market had them at Christmas time. But for us it's all part of the trip to Grand Cayman. We have a mission when we are there... Visit Cay Brew and stock up on their beer to bring home and hit The Duty Free shop to stop up on his Blanton's bourbon since we can never find it by us and get our 6 pack of rum cakes. We eat a couple when we get home, and the rest go in the freezer to be enjoyed at a later date.

I haven't tried the coffee yet either but did see it for sale while in Grand Cayman. They are easy to spot as the box is blue.

They say it's Jamaican blue mountain coffee. Whatever coffee they use, it's amazing, especially for breakfast!
