Anyone in here decorate cakes?

Cryssi...I was browsing frosting recipes and saw this...

Crisco - 492 grams
Salt - 1 tsp
Sour Cream - 2/3 Cup
Clear Vanilla - 2 tsp
Lorann Champagne Flavor - 2 tsp
Powdered Coffee Creamer, DRY - 1/2 Cup
Powdered Sugar - 2 pounds

Sift powdered sugar. Combine with powdered creamer and set aside.

Beat shortening with salt until smooth and creamy. Add half of sour cream and flavorings. Beat until smooth and creamy. Add half of powdered sugar mixture and beat until well-combined and creamy. Add remaining sour cream mixture, beat until combined. Add last of powdered sugar mixture and beat until smooth and creamy. Continue beating if a fluffier icing is desired.

This makes a very slightly ivory icing. You may wish to add a bit of icing whitener or a tiny touch of violet coloring if ivory is not the desired outcome.

Crusts...but not heavily. Can be smoothed with Viva or Melvira method after about a half-hour. If using another Lorann flavoring instead of Champagne, add sparingly, a little at a time, as not all Lorann flavors impart the same degree of flavor. 2 Teaspoons would be awful if using their Almond, for instance.

It has no butter so I'm not sure how it would taste but it has 5 stars.

When you make frosting do you use salted or unsalted butter? Salt enhances sweetness so if you use a recipe that calls for salt or you use salted butter, your recipe will be sweeter.

I use unsalted butter and omit salt from my recipe. I get comments about how nice and not too sweet my frosting is. I don't do this for baked goods as salt helps leavening.

Thanks! I may have to give this a try...the buttercream dream calls for 1 cube salted and 1 cube unsalted and it is still like eating pure sugar...lol

These are my first 3 cakes - made for 3 girls having a birthday party on the same day and using the Wilton doll pan set. I used MMF fondant for the first time - what a hoot to work with! It's like play-doh for grown-ups.;) It was a good learning experience and I think I'm hooked on cake decorating! I might sign up for some classes at Michaels.

Weird

Hey guys! I havent posted in a while. I am going to upload my sons Lightening Mc Queen cake pictures later. It was made using a 3d car cake pan .

But I wanted to ask for some help! I am making a Star Wars cake (the volcano scene ) and I really to make the volcano part a active volcano that bubles out when you pour the mixture in. But I can only find recipes for cakes that use dry ice. Something I dont want around the kids. Nor do I want to deal with it. Is there anything that I can use thats a natural food that will cause a chemical bubble type reaction and cause the lava to flow out of the top of the cake? It has to be safe to come into contact with the food as well.

I will get around to posting some pics after the weekend is over. I have a thread to go catch up on now!

Diet coke and mentos? You'll have diet coke on your cake though. :p

The yankees symbol got a little smushed when I had to move it, but for my first official cake, I don't think its too shabby!

So I went to class tonight. We learned the frosting clowns(Mine turned out great!) and drop flowers. My drop flowers were terrible. I will post pictures later.

Ok so for Easter I am making a cake for a crawfish boil. I am going to make an Oval cake. I was thinking white with a lemon buttercream filling. It should compliment the crawfish very well.

So for the leomon buttercream...do I add lemon flavoring to the wilton buttercream recipe or should I try something different?

Oh and I am going to decorate it like an Easter egg.

So glad I found this thread. I've gotten into cake decorating recently too! I'll have to find some pictures.

Those clowns are cute!! I had trouble with my clowns...they looked like icing blobs...lol

Good job on that Yankees cake up there! Not bad for your first try!

We've got a DIS meet locally tomorrow and i'm trying to decide if I want to bake something for it or not...we're meeting in a restaurant (Buca di Beppo's) so i'm not sure if the restaurant will freak out about me bringing something in or not. Maybe I could bring them in like little favors or something...they've got those cute little cupcake boxes out there...still thinking...

Any ideas for some DIS related cupcakes?

Oh...and for the lemon buttercream...yes, you can add lemon extract to your buttercream, but honestly, you might want to try a different recipe than the wilton one, if you have the time to play. If I recall correctly, the Wilton recipe is sugar and shortening, right? No butter? I think that I linked to a recipe up there on my last post...and I believe that MosMom posted a recipe too!

If you don't have time to try a new recipe, you can add lemon extract to your current recipe. I would still add a bit of vanilla too...just check your flavors when as it's coming together. You don't want it to be too tart! :)

I saw a recipe on the cakecentral site that was a lemon curd buttercream. I am going to try to make it, wish me luck.

Did two of these for Easter. Carrot cake cupcakes and the leaves are cheesecake stuffed chocolate dipped strawberries.
