Anyone in here decorate cakes?

Very cute Cryssi!

I have to do a birthday cake this weekend for a 3 year old. I just have zero inspiration at the moment. I think i'll try one of those cupcake cakes. Her mom mentioned cupcakes for the kids. Maybe i'll just do enough cupcakes for everyone...

CRYSSI! That is an adorable cake, I'm so glad you shared it with us :)

I am smack in the middle of Wilton course 2; we only do one cake in Course 2, all the work is with royal icing. Right now I'm just making flowers and colorflow decor like a fiend, but it's fun.

Keep those pics coming!!

:yay:

thanks you guys! :goodvibes I probably should take a class, though...my torting needs MUCH work... LOL Plus I made my green mmf wrong...too much water...it was so soft! oh well! at least the cake tasted good...:thumbsup2

Very cute! Did you put some piping gel on there to give the water that slicked look? Is your Duckie edible? He looks like it and looks fantastic!

Very cute! Is the umbrella an inverted cupcake?

At my local bakery, I was the cutest 4" miniature cakes, round & square. They were fully decorated like full-size versions. Some looked like high-end wedding cakes, others like birthday cakes, & others were theme cakes. I thought those were so cute & of a size that is doable. No too small like a large cupcake, but not so big that I'd waste all my frosting on what turns out to be an ugly cake!

Here are a couple of tips for having your cakes bake evenly and flat. First, put the pan in the freezer for about 15 minutes before you fill them. This will slow down the outer cooking and your cake will bake more evenly.

Second, after you fill the pan, spin it around a few time. This will move the mix to the edges and give you a flatter cake. I ususally have very, very little to level off.

I have been doing these two tricks for at least 10 years and my cakes are always cooked thru and flat.

cake is 2 9" rounds, torted and filled
umbrella was baked in a small pyrex bowl
duckie is lemon white chocolate in a mold! I didn't sculpt him (her)! LOL
umbrella handle is MMF wrapped around one of those white lollipop sticks.

slick water is piping gel! a fancy trick I learned off of cakecentral...LOL!

I am going to teach my daughter how to decorate cakes. I learned how years ago, but cannot continue as I have, I believe the beginnings of carpal tunnel (I'm a hair stylist)...so, I told her I would teach her how to do it. Nobody in our little town does it so I think she would be busy with them. She's planning on going to school to be a pastry chef later on, so this would just be a bonus:)

Well ladies, I'm very glad to share that my days of fondant envy may soon be over! I signed up for Course 3 yesterday, so I'll FINALLY get to start working with that and tiers.

For good measure I went ahead and signed up for the specialty Fondant and Gum Paste Flowers class in Sept; I am really looking foward to it, you guys have inspired me SOOO much, THANK you for that!

I'm glad I had to learn buttercream first though, it's a PITA but important to work with for awhile.

Royal icing is turning out to be much better than I thought, it might end up being my fave icing...we will see!

:cake:

I loved making pansies when I took the Course 2!!!

Oh I have to sign up for a class!! You are all inspiring me! I have made cakes in the past- nothing too crazy. The Barbie cake, and various simple character cakes for my kids. Oh and I made a schoolbus once that came out really nice. But I would love to work with things other than just my buttercream and my tips. Fondant is one that I would love to learn about- Ok I am calling the store right now to get in on the class. even if I look like the big dork in front of fancy cake people. I WILL DO IT!

Beautiful cake MosMom!!!!!!!! I like the effect of the #2 tip. It makes the black bolder.

Here is the wedding cake I did today. Not totally happy with my piping job but the bride was thrilled. I guess if the bride is thrilled, I am. I really needed to use a #1 tip but DH let it fall down the drain and turned on the garbage disposal. I went to get another and they were all gone. So it is #2 and too thick but oh well. :)

Very nice. I love how the #2 looks too. And, Mmmmm what kind of cake did you make?

I should never open this thread. Now I need to go find something to eat. :upsidedow

great job! your cake is very smooth! :thumbsup2 I also like it with the #2...

oooh so elegant! I love it and I like the #2 tip- thicker is interesting.

That is a beautiful cake Mo!

I have a hard time working with tip 1 (depending on my icing), I think it looks fantastic!

Java, go for the classes. I love mine, a good escape from reality each week where it's just me and the icing

OK ladies, help me out. Tuesday is my dad's birthday and I want to make him a fondant cake. It will have to be chocolate. I think I'll just make a standard box mix cake in two layers. Would the store-bought frosting be ok to put under the fondant? I usually make my own buttercream, but I've never made chocolate before and I don't know if I want to "waste" my time making frosting. And what about the chocolate marshmallow fondant. Can someone please share how to make that?

Here are some pics that I had offhand. I have a Cinderella wedding cake one and a few other's as well. Including one of Andy's room from Toy Story. The Tree stump cake is a last minute creation when the Mad Hatter's hat cake didnt not work out as planned due to bad supports! And the other is a Egyptian pyramid that was used for a adventure party we had with a Lara CRoft / Indiana Jones theme . We used gram crackers for the sand and a found the pattern to cut the cake into a pyramid online . I will dig around for the other pictures. With my kids food allergies there is no such posibility as buying a bakery cake so we usually end up having to be creative. Its a lot of fun .
