Anyone in here decorate cakes?

Hi! I hand-painted the pattern with a paintbrush and americolor gels...it took a bit of time! LOL

i'm headed to the cake supply store today in Phoenix for the first time. I'm so excited! I'm afraid I'll come home with everything in the store! :cool1:

Hi,
I am bringing the children's snack at church on Sunday, and I want to do cake because I have all the ingredients for an organic one (many of the parents there are health-conscious so this would be a good compromise, lol). I would like the cake to have an Earth Day theme, but the problem is in the serving. The kids will rush in after Sunday school and expect to have little pre-portioned plates waiting for them, as always. It's just not feasible or efficient to wait until everyone has come in and seen the cake before I start cutting it. SO, I need some ideas for decoration that will still be "Earth Day-ish" on individual portions. I was thinking of just doing a green/blue "Earth" pattern marble, and writing Happy Earth Day on the cake for pictures beforehand. Another idea would be to make 2 half sheets and decorate one elaborately, the other not so much, and cut the latter first. That way everyone could see the other cake for a while until we dig in. Yeah, that would be a big pain in the butt, but is probably more fun. Thoughts? Other ideas?
Thanks!

I have to say you ladies have inspired me to look into taking cake decorating classes.
Unfortunately the local Michaels classes are not schedule-friendly for me. I am really looking forward to starting though. I have a friend enrolling with me and plenty of volunteers to eat my mistakes :rotfl:

When I started, way back in the dark ages LOL, I bought the early VHS tapes that Wilton had and some of there magazines. Then I just "caked" my family to death practicing. I have yet to try fondant. It looks so scary.

you will have a blast! It's like being a kid in a candy shop...you want EVERYTHING! I'm lucky that my cake shop is only about 5-10 min from my house. However, every time I go, I inevitably come back with several things that I don't *really* need...lol...but you have an excuse since it's far away! Just hand over the credit card and close your eyes... :rotfl: Have fun!!!

Hey Friends~
I am in agreement Mary, I've always loved the monkey cake.

MrsKreamer, congrats on your first cake sale! Lovely roses :)

Cryssi, that cake is GREAT! I want to try topsy turvy but haven't got up the nerve yet.:scared:

On the filling...I know no one likes us 'grocery store' decorators, but you actually can buy cake fills from some of them, I know we sell ours to customers at cost if they ask. We have sleeves of lemon, strawberry, raspberry, cream cheese and coconut cream so it might be worth a look.

On Wilton instructors, I applied but didn't finish the process due to taking the cake job at one of our local grocers but it sounded like a TON of fun-hope you get an offer you like!

On the flip side, I got offered the position of bakery manager at my work, but it means giving up caking so I'm still rolling it around in my head. We'll see; I'm not getting too much out of sheet cakes at this point, my fun is the special orders and wedding cakes but we don't do a hellabunch of those.

I am starting my big cake tomorrow, wish me luck!

~~happy caking~~

WOW!!! That's awesome! I've actually toyed with the idea of getting a part-time job at a local grocery store bakery for the experience. Our Marsh stores have really nice bakeries that do more in the way of desserts that just the standard sheet cakes. But I can't afford to give up my day job right now, so we'll see. I wouldn't mind a Saturday or an evening or two, if they could offer those hours...

Hello cake gurus!

I'm working on planning a surprise goodbye/we'll miss you party for my brother and his friend that are going to do the WDW CP from May28-Jan... anyway... I'd love to make the cake- not much experience, however I'm a fairly quick study. I just haven't the foggiest where to start in my internet searches, so I figured I'd start w/ the best!

TIA! :thumbsup2

Always good to see you Star...even though it isn't nearly enough *cough cough*

Future, try http://www.cakecentral.com - It is a great resource!

I did a cake last night for a big murder mystery dinner fundraiser that was beach themed called "How to slay a castaway".

This was a fun cake to do. I put a revolver on the crashed boat, a knife through a palm tree, a spilled bottle of poison, a little dude hiding in a bush with a spear ( I somehow missed him in the pics).

Put it on a revolving cake stand so everyone could see all around it. The volcano was made of foam and hollowed out so we could put a container of dry ice inside and have it smoke. We ended up not being able to find any! Grrr! Oh well. ;)

Congrats to them both! I was on the '93 CP. Whoops justed dated myself then! I mean 2003 yeah that MUST have been the year! :lmao: They will have a blast.

As far as cakes go MosMom had a good site to go to. Do you know what area they will be working such as food and beverage, merchandising, lifeguarding, attractions, etc? You could use that as a theme to your cake.

Good luck and post pictures of whatever you do!

This is so cute! I love the shark! All the details are great. Too bad about the dry ice that would have been awesome but it turned out great without it anyway!

So here was my last minute, thrown together surf board cake for a family member. I was told on Friday they were coming up for a birthday party so I just used what I had on hand. If I were to do this again I wouldnt make it so cartoon looking and put some waves with a shark fin sticking out of the cake board behind it! I just got lazy. I also tried to do cutouts of palm trees or hibiscus for the middle and couldn't get them to look right so I just used what I had on hand. I'll have to search for cutouts of those.

Speaking of cookie cutters has anyone seen mickey mouse head ones outside the theme parks???

Oh, that is cute!

I haven't seen any but I plan on our next trip buying one of those blue mickey cookie cutters.

Mos and AZ, GREAT CAKES!

Mos, miss you too; please tell our mutual friends hello for me! I was wondering where you were :)

Off to deliver the fountain cake, will take pics and post them later.

~Until Later~
