Anyone in here decorate cakes?

I am speechless at the talent here!! The cakes are stunning!! What wonderful work you all do.:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

I'm looking for a filling to use in a birthday cake I need to make for my sister. Does anyone have one that they truly love? It could go with a chocolate or white cake. Thank you for your help!!

You know, I recently read something I thought you ladies might enjoy. When you mix flour and water together, you get glue. Then, you add sugar and eggs and you get cake. Where did the glue go? It's still there. It is what makes the cake stick to a person's rear! LOL! I thought this was pretty funny. Thanks for letting me share!

I actually just use the 100% fruit spreads from smuckers for fillings! Strawberry and Black Cherry are my favorites...

If you have a cake decorating store in your area, not a place like Michael's/Jo-Ann's/Hobby Lobby, but a true cake decorating store...they often sell sleeves of fillings as well. Not sure how quickly you might need it, but you can also order them online. I purchase oodles of stuff from Country Kitchens! Here's a link to the fillings if you're interested! One sleeve is plenty to fill a standard cake!

anyone having trouble getting on CC today?

Brandie, those fruit spreads work well? You don't have to refrigerate the cake?

Thanks Brandie!! I appreciate the link. Have you tried these fillings? The strawberry one looked good ;)

I tend to like the strawberry, raspberry, and lemon sleeved fillings. Although I'm trying to find homemade alternatives...especially for the bavarian cream sleeve, which I'm starting to not like.

I don't have to refrigerate the cakes when using these as a filling. They seem to work alright as long as I put a thin layer of buttercream down first, then add the spread on top.

I have tried the chocolate, lemon, and strawberry fillings so far. These fillings work pretty nice and you don't have to put a layer of buttercream down first! I would still, obviously, put a ring of buttercream along the edges to keep the filling from seeping out!

Did y'all see this contest? I think people on this board could win.

Thanks! Looks like a cool contest. Maybe I should enter one of these. But, which one?

Mac's Birthday Monster- This cake was designed to the exact specifications of my firend's son who was turning 5. He wanted a not too scary monster.

Do you think I should enter either of these?

Mary

Wow Mary they both are amazing!! Not sure which one I like better, the monkey cake is amazing however I love the colors of the monster cake. Either way you go you have a winner :thumbsup2

I love both, but I like the monkey one better, lol...its just so cute!!!!

My dd said that the monkey cake is adorable! Me too! Enter that one!

I think the monkey one is adorable.

I have a friend who is trying to get me to enter the splash mountain cake. I'm thinking about it.

So tomorrow I'm headed to ABC Cakes in Phoenix (I live in the suburbs so this is a far drive for me) to get some more fondant for a cake I am making for an upcoming ladies only trip to Disneyland. :cool1: I have to make a lot of figures and shapes to stand around the outside. I've never done this so I was wondering would you use fondant or gumpaste or a mixture of the 2? I was always confused as to which one to use when. Although I understand gumpaste is stronger so works better for some flowers etc.

OHHHHH, and after I ask a question showing my complete incompetence:lmao: I have to tell you that I was asked if I would be a Wilton Instructor. In fact I applied, sent the application in but the store they offered me was a little too far so I'm thinking of turning it down and waiting for another store to open up.

I feel like I am not good enough for this job but apparently my instructor did and based on the pictures I sent in to Wilton they thought I was too! I'm a little nervous about all of it though! :)

baby shower cake I made last weekend...

cake002.jpg

bear is MMF, blocks are MMF mixed with a bit of tylose powder to stiffen them up...

p.s. Mary I vote for the monkey cake, too...too cute!

I've never heard of tylose powder. What is this? I think that baby shower cake is adorable. I've never tried a lopsided cake. I've found one set of directions online. Did you use any certain directions or just wing it? Any advice or tips for first timers?

tylose is what you add to fondant to make gumpaste...I think...ask at the cake shop, they should have it!

I used the tutorial on cakecentral for "whimsical tilted cake". I didn't do it exactly, but the basics on how to construct it I used. For example, I didn't have the cake plates he talks about, so I just used the cardboard cake circles underneath the cake and lollipop sticks as dowels. I did use one large dowel through the middle of all 3 layers per the girls at the cake shop I go to. I made a hole in the middle of the cake circle before I put the cake on it to make it easier, if that made sense!

oh and thanks! :goodvibes

First sold cake.
cakes2024.jpg

We only sold it for cost, since we are still learning. Please ignore the ugly bow...

They really enjoyed it.

I need some help. My cousin turns 6 next week and wants a "Mickey Mouse cake with a pink bow" lol So since I haven't done fondant yet I am really unsure about what to do???

I have been following this thread pretty much from the start. I love looking at all the cakes. I'm not much into baking (or cooking anything for that matter:) ) but I love looking. Y'all are so talented! I checked out some of the cakes on the family.com website and the cakes here would blow them out of the water!

Mary enter the Monkey cake...its so cute and different. Plus Monkeys are SO IN these days

Mrs Kreamer I love your cake. I notice those colors too! I was born and raised in New Orleans (Algiers) although I have been in Dallas for the past 16 years. They still can't take the New Orleans out of me! I'm always getting asked where I'm from. I'm told I have a heavy accent. I don't know what they are talking about Dawling! :)

Mosmom it sure looks like you have found your niche!

The rest of you keep up the good work. Keep the cakes coming!

Take Care
Jamie
