Anyone in here decorate cakes?

Brandie, that cupcake cake is adorable!

Mary, my favorite is the Bookfair Blizzard cake. Way too cute! I love all the penguins in line to go to the book fair.

Thanks! I had fun making that cake. I had made a cup of hot cocoa (instead of a margarita :lmao: )to go on the ice block with the floating penguin, but I forgot to put it on the cake. Doh!

I signed up today! I already know the basics so course 1 will be a refresher for me. I start next Monday!

Here are my three most recent cakes:

Ms. A's Babyshower Cake
Edie-Web.jpg

This was done for my dd8's second grade teacher's "classroom babyshower". It's chocolate chocolate chip cake with chocolate buttercream covered in fondant. The kids loved it and the leftovers were shared with some of the other teachers. It was a big hit! It's double layer 8", 6" and 4" rounds.

Kelsey's 8th Birthday Cake

This cake was done for the same day as the babyshower cake... so I was working on them simultaneously. Kelsey wanted a "pretty cake with pandas on it"... so this is what I came up with. Unfortunately, I had a little trouble with my supports and it started to buckle a bit. I called it my "Leaning Tower of Pandas Cake". My 6pm when the party was it looked a bit more like a whimsical cake than a tiered cake... but the kids loved it anyway. It was vanilla cake with strawberry filling.

Bookfair Blizzard Cake

I am co-chairing the Scholastic Bookfair at our school this week. I made this for our teachers preview party that we had Friday afternoon. The theme is "Bookfair Blizzard". The cake is chocolate chocolate chip with white chocolate buttercream frosting. The igloo is a half a sports ball pan with fondant "ice blocks" on top. The polar bear, penguins and books are all made out of fondant.

Thanks for looking.
Mary

Too bad you are in Atlanta, I'd give you a few orders! Your cakes are great!!!

That bookfair cake is fabulous!!

(I don't bake; I just drool.)

Do I need to bring anything? I have a ton of stuff already, should I bring down the tips that I have so that I don't have to purchase double? The instructor wasn't there when I signed up and the person at the register was new....so she couldn't tell me anything.

Hi, everybody!! I have read the entire thread. Thank you for sharing your beautiful work!! I love to bake cakes but decorating has intimidated me for a long time.

y'all inspired me to take the plunge and sign up for a wilton class at my local hobby lobby (i even found a 25% off coupon in last sunday's paper!. alas, when i called to inquire, i was told they'd lost their instructor and were still in the process of finding another :( no class for me...

I have also read this entire thread today. Cake decorating is always something that I have wanted to do but hae been a bit intimidated to try. All of you have given me so much inspiration. Your cakes are all beautiful. I am going to definately sign up for a class now! Thank you all very much!

Looking at all the wonderful cakes on this thread makes me want to take a cake decorating class. I enjoyed looking at the pictures of all the cakes. You all are so talented.

My first class was basically the instructor demonstrating what we would do for the class sessions. But to be on the safe side, I would at least bring my tips.

I brought everything that I had and I only had to buy a practice board.

My instructor kind of grossed me out. She kept eating the crumbs off the table (which wasn't very clean) and she kept eating the frosting out of the bowl with her fingers. She lick them clean. Then when she got done demoing the cake she went and gave it to the employees of Michaels!!! Ewwwww. If they only knew how that cake was handled.

The class will be fun, it will be a great refresher for me. As long as she stops eating stuff with her fingers....

Ewwwwwww...it is hard sometimes to not lick your fingers!! But I would NEVER do that when I was preparing a cake for someone other than my husband! (Whatever germs I have, believe me...he's got...lol)

My first Wilton instructor was...odd. She was alright, I guess...but her cakes never looked "pretty". I had a different instructor for my 2nd and 3rd sessions though. She was great!! I would like to go back and take the fondant and gumpaste class one of these days...

I hope you guys can see these, as I am not very good at capturing them sometimes! Both are birthday cakes, the "put me in the zoo cake" for my niece on her 3rd, and the dragon for a friend's son's 5th.

They are adorable:)

Wow! There are some impressive cakes here! I've enjoyed lurking.

Does anyone have experience with doing a camouflage pattern? I'm going to attempt one for my DS's party and was wondering if anyone had suggestions or hints.

Thanks!
