Anyone in here decorate cakes?

MosMom & Aunt Michelle those are incredible cakes! :cool1:
Very inventive on both your parts.

MosMom, I love the boa! How was the cover made? Is it another cake, or just a box cover with fondant on top?

Aunt Michelle, the pics are great as they are because we can see the detailing.:thumbsup2 But if you want to make the pics smaller, Photobucket has a resize button at the top of the pictures. Click on that and you can choose what size to resize. But make a copy of the pic first, then resize that, in case you don't like the size it turns out. Then you can delete the new pic, make another copy & start over. You can't unsize a pic once it has been resized. Also, you will have to edit any links to the old pics to the new resized links.

By the way, I love Collette Peters. I always see her on the Food Network. Her bakery is located here, but she doesn't teach classes there - only around the country.

Thank you, both for the compliment and the picture sizing help. I really enjoyed Collette's class. I took it at the Notter School of Party Arts in Orlando, and yes, of course I stayed in WDW! I could drive down and back and I am a DVC owner, so I really just had to pay for the class (which was good because it wasn't cheap). There were two women from the U.K. and another two from Brazil! We spent a day and a half on gum paste flowers, and the remainder on fondant and other techniques. She very personable and answered every question we asked. She also signed any of her books you bought or brought. I was happy with the class and thought it was definitely worth the cost. I was shocked to find out that she has no pastry degree, etc. She was an art major, if I remember correctly. She does an advanced class too.

MosMom, that trunkcake is very cool! Especially the powder spilling out of the compact, what a perfect touch. Aunt Michelle, I am in love with that first cake, and that sleeping baby is adorable. Can't wait to see more!

I know the basics, but I'd really love to get into decorating more. I think I'm going to finally sign up for a class. They have on at Michaels (an hour away from me...oh well) for $30 plus supplies. Does anyone know what supplies are needed? I don't want to purchase items if I already have them.

Thanks. The boa looked much better when I first put it on but all the cotton candy shrunk quite a bit overnight. Now I know to wait to put cotton candy on right before delivery. The cotton candy in the powder case was big and poofy too and you can see that shrunk quite a bit as well.

The lid is carved cake. The plan was to put it on top like an opened trunk and I had the support system in mind but I chickened out. The fear of it crushing everything I had worked so hard on made me decide to put it on the side.

Aunt Michelle, love the cakes. The golf bag is adorable. It is those little simple touches that really make a difference on a cake.

MosMom- I love your dress-up cake! I saw it on CakeCentral and was impressed. Last I checked it was on the front page under "popular photos"!

I'm trying to post my two most recent cakes... but all I get are RED X'x One is a baby shower cade for my DD8's second grade teacher and the other is DD8's birthday cake. If I can figure out how to do it I'll get them posted eventually.

On a good note... We had DD8's birthday at a local kids cooking school and the owner wants to refer all requests for specialty cakes to me :scared1: So, I think I'm going to start selling cakes soon. I've been thinking about it for awhile, but I've been procrastinating. I'm a bit commitment phobic! My DH is setting up the corporation. I think I'm going to call it The Crazy Cake Lady... partially because I think I'm nuts. :lmao: IF anyone has a better idea for a name let me know.

They sell the "kits" that you would need at Michaels in the Wilton section. I tried to look up what is specifically in each kit, but couldn't find the details like what tips, etc. The kits are usually between $20 and $30, but if you have the coupons from the Sunday ads, you could save 40%! I would go to Michaels and look at each of the kits so that you can see what is in them...

I've got a few cakes to show off...nothing as elaborate as MosMom's cake or Aunt Michelle's, but a few none the less. I need to upload them online first. I'll be back!! :)

my mom took one with her sister once. I would really like to take one too. I love to bake and decorate cakes. she still has her certifcate.

I'll have to check, I probably have everything already.

Ok...I thought I had more, but I realized that I had already posted the candy cane cake! So here's the one that I made for Christmas day. I took it up to my brother and sister in law's house where we celebrated Christmas with our parents this year...I made it using the giant 3D cupcake pan that my DH got me for Christmas. (he'd been obsessed with this pan since he first saw it) It was a champagne cake with champagne buttercream. I bought the peppermint sticks at Cracker Barrel. They are the softer peppermint sticks. Kind of like giant versions of those little pastel dinner mints that look like tiny pillows. And the whole thing was sprayed with lustre spray (I LOVE this stuff!!) and sprinkled with peppermint sugar.

Scarlett, that cake looks scrumptious (I love both cupcakes and peppermint). How did you achieve the swirl finish on that scale?

Thank you. It was funny in the class because everyone else seemed to have a "theme" to their cakes. Originally mine didn't have those "scoops of ice cream" on top and everyone was asking "what's the theme?" Then someone said to me "it reminds me of a "Cream Cicle" (those treats on the stick with vanilla ice cream and orange sherbet) and all of a sudden I had a theme :cool1: , so then I made the two scoops of ice cream. It was a very fun "cake" (it was actually cake dummies) to make. My favorite is the top layer.

Brandie - This cake is fabulous! I would have loved to have it for our Christmas dessert table.

Thank you! I had the cake on a turntable and just took my small spatula around it. I started at the bottom, and never picking up the spatula until the top, just swirled all the way up!

Awww...thanks!

Brandie, I just LOVE that cupcake cake!!!

As always, GORGEOUS cakes ladies!!! So inspiring :thumbsup2 :goodvibes

Here are my three most recent cakes:

Ms. A's Babyshower Cake
Edie-Web.jpg

This was done for my dd8's second grade teacher's "classroom babyshower". It's chocolate chocolate chip cake with chocolate buttercream covered in fondant. The kids loved it and the leftovers were shared with some of the other teachers. It was a big hit! It's double layer 8", 6" and 4" rounds.

Kelsey's 8th Birthday Cake
Kelsey8thBirthday-Web.jpg

This cake was done for the same day as the babyshower cake... so I was working on them simultaneously. Kelsey wanted a "pretty cake with pandas on it"... so this is what I came up with. Unfortunately, I had a little trouble with my supports and it started to buckle a bit. I called it my "Leaning Tower of Pandas Cake". My 6pm when the party was it looked a bit more like a whimsical cake than a tiered cake... but the kids loved it anyway. It was vanilla cake with strawberry filling.

Bookfair Blizzard Cake
BookfairBlizzardWeb.jpg

I am co-chairing the Scholastic Bookfair at our school this week. I made this for our teachers preview party that we had Friday afternoon. The theme is "Bookfair Blizzard". The cake is chocolate chocolate chip with white chocolate buttercream frosting. The igloo is a half a sports ball pan with fondant "ice blocks" on top. The polar bear, penguins and books are all made out of fondant.

Thanks for looking.
Mary
