Anyone in here decorate cakes?

I need help from you wonderful cake makers.

DS wants a surfboard shaped cake for his 12th birthday (this Saturday) and I can't figure out how to do it. I'll need enough cake for 10 people. My biggest problem is trying to figure out what to bake the cake in.

Any ideas?

I would use a sheet pan and then just cut out the shape. Seems pretty easy.

Oh and it might be cute to have a shark bite taken out of the board along with a marzipan shark head?

OOOoh, that's a great idea Java!! If you're not up for the entire shark head, maybe just make a shark's tooth out of fondant/maripan and leave it stuck in the bitten off area?

Well, since we haven't had a cake posted in awhile I figured I would post. Just finished this for our family Christmas party.

I'm not crazy about it. It looks better in the picture I think. It is growing on me though.

I can't decide if it is cute and whimsical or just plain tacky. :rotfl:

I think it's really cute.

Merry Christmas. :goodvibes

That is the cutest Christmas cake that I've ever seen!!

Bridget, that cake is ADORABLE!! I love anything that resembles peppermint candies!

I've been quite the busy little beaver here. Had the boss's party, which was a success! And I did some cookie packages for co-worker gifts which included gingerbread men, sugar cookies with cream cheese icing and crushed peppermint, and snowflake shaped sugar cookies topped with fondant and sprayed with lustre spray. I was quite proud of them myself...

I also did a cake that I took over to a friend's house for dinner the other night. It was a 10" chocolate cake filled with chocolate bettercreme sprinkled with peppermint baking chips. It wasn't perfect, but it came out pretty close to the image I had in my mind anyway.

I'm in the process of doing another cake for our family Christmas tomorrow. My DH got me the giant cupcake pan for Christmas and so i'm breaking it in properly! I'll post a picture when I get it done!! Won't be as fancy as Bridget's up there, but it'll be cute! :)

Merry Christmas to my fellow cakers!!

I love that candy cane cake. How adorable. I've seen it with the the candy cane sticks but I really like it with the curved candy canes better!

Mosmom and Brandie, they look great! I didn't get to do much this year, only dipped pretzel rods...

Both of those cakes are FAB! :thumbsup2

I've been on the production side this week, only a few 'nice' cakes (for special orders) all else is...meh. Fast. ;)

I hope you ladies have a Merry Christmas!!

Brandie - You inspired me to take a class this year. Here is one I did - I've done similar cakes since for a bridal shower and recently did a pink baby shower cake! I loved looking through everyone pictures. DS has a birthday next week and after all the pies and other treats I think we'll be ready for a cake.

Dress up trunk cake

Crown is white chocolate, shoe is gumpaste, powder puff & feather boa are cotton candy. I took the long string of cotton candy and cut it to make it appear more like feathers.

Holy cannoli that is a beautiful cake!! Look at that gumpaste shoe and the boa is genius!
Great job!
So with the kids do they eat the fondant or pick it off?

I find kids love it. It is the adults that pick it off. When I'm making a cake my kids always want the fondant scraps.

I just love the little glittery powder and the extra spillage that occurred! You are so talented.

My first attempt is going to be simple- a little Cookie monster cake- I'm thinking of just doing the face as then I could use regular round pans.
As long as it is blue ds will love it(he is going to be 3 loves cookie monster)

Everyone of these cakes are fabulous!!!!!!!!!! I would love to be able to make a cake like all of these but I can't even make a box of brownies without messing them up and having them to trow away.

Java, my first cake was an Elmo face so we all start out somewhere. :p

Thank you! :) Before I introduce myself, I just wanted to say WOW! I read through the whole thread and kept seeing wonderfully creative cakes. I wish I'd found this thread months ago.
My mom, sisters and I do cakes in sort of a tag-team fashion. One sister bakes the cakes, my mom does any icing, including crumb coating, and my other sister and I do the finish work. I finally took a class after becoming frustrated with not being able to do things. I did a five day with Collette Peters last May, and learned alot. I will share a couple of our most recent cakes.
I am looking forward to seeing more great cakes from everyone here! Thanks again for letting me join! I hope you enjoy my cakes.

p.s. I don't know how to make the pictures smaller... I am getting them from Photobucket. Any advice would be appreciated!

This is the cake that was my final in the cake class. We were instructed to try and use as many techniques as we could:
