We just rescued a puppy from the Rescue League. Our older lab has lots of health issues and hip problems. We have always paid out of pocket for her Vet bills. I am thinking perhaps we should look into pet insurance for the new puppy while we still can. Anyone have pet insurance? From which company?

Yes, I have ShelterCare for our 2 cats. We just had an $800 ER bill for our 11 month old and will be reimbursed about $600. It isn't perfect ($100 deductible per incident, 70% coverage after that) but it helps. I would say try it, and if your pet seems to be healthy you can always drop it.

We don't have pet insurance because I just couldn't find one that would cover common Boxer dog issues (we now have three boxers!). And if they did, the insurance was just so expensive and what we'd still be responsible for paying was a lot of $$.

So, we got a "Care Credit" card for our guys. We have a 6 month promo on ALL our charges. So, for every single charge, I get six months to pay it off without interest. It has worked really well for us (and with three boxers, we spend a decent amount of $$ at the vet...). You might want to check with your vet to see if they take it. They'll also have the application and can get you approved right there.

Our newest addition tore his CCL (like the human ACL) last week. We're going to get him a brace for his leg to stabilize it while he heals (about $800). It's all going on the card and will get paid off in a few months...

Good luck whatever you decide!

I have VPI insurance for all 3 dogs-basic plans cost me about $45/month for all 3-have gotten reimbursed about 70% of total outlays. It's amazing what 2 Standard Poodles and a lab mix can get into and need a vet visit for:confused3:scared1:
For me it is worth it because I would pay for their vet bills anyway so any $ I get back is great

We have healthypaws We have 90% reimbursement and a $100 annual deductible. We've had to use it once, they were super fast with reimbursement and they cover hereditary stuff like hip dysplasia. They also do a lot with animal rescues. I did a ton of research and they had the most benefits.

You have to be careful because most pet insurance companies will not cover pre-existing conditions and hip issues. We also have healthy paws with 90% coverage and $100 annual deductable for our 2 french bulldogs. They are rated as one of the best pet insurance companies out there.

Nope, don't have insurance. I do have a membership with Pet Assure - a discount program for vets, which I get through my workplace, instead of pet insurance.

I wanted to get it for my kitty but she had been diagnosed with renal failure before the application was sent in by me so she was declined.

I have two thoughts. One is that if we get another kitty, I would either start her on insurance right away OR I would see about the costs and put that money each month into a self-funded pet account and just use that.

We have wellness plans through Banfield, which is located in Petsmart stores. It covers all of their normal preventative care, like all of their shots, plus your office visits are free. There are 3 levels of plan, the lowest one is about $25 monthly per dog, I think our cats might be $20 each. Different plans cover different things, and give you a discount on services that aren't covered. For example, my beagle needed to have a tumor removed. They quoted me $1200 on the lowest plan, by moving her to the highest plan, which was $35 monthly, the surgery was only $600. If you increase your plan, you have to leave it that way for a year, then you can lower it is you want to. Plus, it is taken by any Banfield, and they are all over. So, if you are traveling and something happens, you can go to any Banfield.

We have two dogs and two cats, and have been very happy with their care.
