My husband use to be thin when we were younger but now has a big belly. He works at a desk job and tells me that no one in his office doing a job that involves sitting all day over 40 is going to have a flat stomach. He says that is just where the weight of middle aged men goes.

He has made some effort at stomach exercises but that has done nothing to his tummy. He does not drink many soft drinks or beer. He wants to let nature take its course and have a belly, I want him to have a hard rock ab, like on TV. Is it really possible to be middle age and still have flat abs?

I'm 39 and have three kids, own two businesses and still find time to go to the gym and eat right and keep in shape. My metabolism has slowed down so I make wise choices, splurge every now and then but I'm still able to keep a flat stomach - not the six pack I had in college, but my waist size is 33/34 depending on brand.

IMHO, your husband is justifying it - middle aged men (am I middle aged at 39 :rolleyes1 ) don't have to be fat. Plenty of my fraternity brothers from college and friends from church who are my age and have "desk jobs" aren't fat (some are though).

dh has a beer belly. I think they are quite unattractive. especially when they wear their pants below the belly.

My hubby is 36 and is lookin' gooooood! :thumbsup2 He does run almost every day and also rides his bike and goes to the gym a few times a week. Although I will admit he is naturally thin, so was his Dad until he decided to grow a belly. I think DH is scared of that happening! He used to eat like a horse, but not as much anymore.

DBF is only 34, but he's still got his 6-pack. Helps that he climbs tree's for a living I'm sure!...He also doesnt drink beer so no beer belly in his future.

But I hve to wonder, how many over 40 women here have a rock hard stomach? Seems sorta odd to expect your husband to if you yourself don't....

:p

Mine does & he's over 50...he was a jogger for years, & has awesome legs.
He does the BowFlex daily and walks with me 2 miles daily.

My DH is thin, but not with rock hard abs.

Dh has never had rock hard abs.....but then again neither have I.

When I met my Dh 9 years ago he had a 6-pack. Now well...lets just day that it is hiding under his milk belly as we call it. :rotfl2:

I just double checked with my DH and he assures me that under his top layer of belly fat are rock hard abs of steel. Just there below the surface. :rotfl:

Nope, my hubby is under 40 and no rocks...........pillows maybe, but no rocks! :rotfl:

Mine is almost 45 and has always had a 6 pack. He works hard at it. Kickboxing or karate every morning, and running every night. He also has a job where he is required to stay in shape -- he's tested for stamina and endurance and if he can't cut it, he'd have to move to a desk job, which he doesn't want to do. So it is his job to stay in shape.

Got any pictures?

Mine never had a rock hard abs, no biggie to me. He is 48, does pretty physical work, has good upper body strength but isn't really muscular looking. He has gained some weight since we got married but he's worn the same size jeans for almost 20 years, which is more than I can say for me!

I am 38 with rock hard abs, but they are buried deep under 10 pounds of belly fat.

YOU want him to have rock hard abs??? VERY sad..... :stir: I want my husband to be kind, to be gentle, to honor our vows, to be respectful, to help me and show his love for me and for our children - I give him the same in return. How he looks is of no concern to me at all and how I look is of no concern to him at all. We love each other for who we are - not how hard or flabby our bellies may be

Yes, it's possible, but you need to really work at it. It takes diet and exercise.

My dh is 42yo and is in better shape than when he was in his 20s. He definitely has a 6 pack, but he is very disciplined. The only thing is that he eats like a rabbit (lettuce and tomato shakes ick and raw asparagus as snacks blech lol). He doesn't eat anything processed and he is very, very strict with his diet and has been a bodybuilder for years. He works out consistently. Some people think I am a health nut... well, he is 20 times more intense. lol

I don't know what to say about wanting your dh to have abs, but I certainly appreciate that my dh takes care of himself. He has had a history of hematomas on his back (3 surgeries to date) and his dad died young. :guilty:

Oh, forgot to add... there is scientific evidence proving that belly fat is bad so there is virtue in being healthy and fit. :thumbsup2

GL!

MY DH is 45 and while he doesn't have a six pack, he's doing OK. At almost 6' and about 173 I can't complain.
