LOVE IT!
We have a 01 Duramax Crew Cab... Its the quietest Diesel on the market..The way they make them now, they are not 1/2 as loud as they were in the past.
The positives- fuel Mileage. 21.5 around town driving if I keep my foot out of it
Towing capabilities. We have towed more with this thing than I can even imagine with a gasser. we have a car hauler size trailer- and had 8 quads, & 4 dirtibkes on it and it pulled on the highway with the cruise set with no problems.
You have to know WHY your buying a diesel- if its a car, I'm asuming its for fuel mileage, if its a truck- I'm going to guess your going to be pulling with it.
We have a grill & front bumper cover, which helps it heat up quickly in the winter, and pass that nice heat into the cab!
They last 200+ miles without much work...(though we had a bad set of injectors, and they dumped close to 10K into my engine...I still love my truck, and it was a problem GM fixed in the 04 Duramax's)
A few negatives-
You have to plug it in during the winter here, or it wont be happy if you try to start it. We have an engine block heater, and have it plugged into an outlet right outside the front door, which is on a timer. It cycles throughout the night. Some people plug them in all night- others a few hours before they get ready to leave etc.
Diesel fuel right now is about 35 cents a gallon more than regular gas. This isn't that bad, when you consider we get 21.5 mpg whereas a comparable gas engine of this size (HP and Torque) gets about 7-8 mpg
The torque, makes it not a very good truck in the snow. All of it's power is at the low end of the pull, and taking off can be a trip when it's slippery out. But pushing the 4hi button works wonders. i must say its the worse truck we've ever had in the snow
Diesel can gel in the winter. you MUST know where your getting your fuel from. Some places mix it 70/30 other 80/20 Sometimes, even when they say its 70/30 it's really not. In 3 years of owning the truck, we've had 1 bad tank during the winter. needless to say- that 1 tank, caused the truck to be out of commission for a week, and 300 bucks later we were up and running.
You cant just stop at "el cheapo" fuel stations. Again, you have to know the place runs through enough diesel to keep the tanks clean. We ALWAYS stop at FlyingJ's or the like when driving to Florida...we see the 300+ truckers pulling away and know they go through enough diesel.
all in all, we'll go diesel again. My DBIL has a Ford PowerStroke, basically, my truck with the ford engine, and I like mine more. His is very loud compared to mine, and I think mine has more "get up and go" from the line than his...Another DBIL has the 8.1 engine in his Chevy Crew and being a gasser- he hasnt driven it in about 4 months..he cant afford the gas, since it gets 7mpg. DFIL has a F350, with the V10 and he's getting gas every 2 days- at 45 bucks a pop! Even with the high diesel prices, it works out better $$wise.
Sorry this got so long!
What are you looking at for a diesel?
