Our first flight arrives at 11:45am, but then our next flight now departs at 10:40am. There is no physical way we can depart from Houston before we even arrive in Houston. Then on our return flight, they changed our first "leg" from 5:30pm to 8:30am. Now we're supposed to sit around the airport for 11 hours between "legs". Grrrr! Although I hate changing planes, we live 6 hours from the nearest airport that would give us a non-stop to Disney. Has this type of unreal connection (most especially the first) ever happened to anyone else?

Call the airline. Their system should have caught the first one. Tell them you would like to know what your options are for flights since they changed the schedule. The first one they should definitely have a different schedule for you. The second...well, it all depends on their flights out of the connecting airport. If they don't HAVE another flight until then, that's about all they can do.

Yes, especially when the flight is months away (you didn't specify when this flight is scheduled). Call them to straighten this out.

My .02... before you call, go to the airlines website and search for a new flight on the day you travel. This way, when you call, you can say "I see on your webite, flight 1234 leaving at 4:30P has open seats, that will (cut down on layover/give us a long enough layover). Can you put us on that flight?"

Be polite and reasonable.

Very good advice. Don't be surprised if the agent on the phone just asks which flights you'd like and gives you your first choices. This has been the scenario every time I've had cancellations and major changes. I usually fly United.:)

Yes, Delta did this to us last January. About 4 months prior, they canceled ALL of our legs and rebooked us, but did not notify us. Thankfully I checked the itinerary and caught it. They had rescheduled our flights so that each way we had layovers of over 9 hours! When I called to change it, there were limited options available out of our small town airport. We ended up on a flight that left 6 hours earlier (screwing up our rental car ressie) and coming home we had to make two connections, instead of one as originally booked.

After all of this, they could not assign a seat to one of our passengers (who is disabled). We were told to check in online and get seat assignments the day before. We still couldn't get a seat assignment. Then when we arrived to the airport at 4 am for our 6 am flight, we were told that we had ALL been put on standby in our connecting city. It took the wonderful agent about 30 minutes talking with several people in the other city to get it straightened out.

Good luck on getting it fixed. Continue to watch the itinerary weekly, even daily the last few weeks before the trip.

I've had it happen with Delta the past 2 trips and they reaccomodated us to better flights. Last year they changed schedules and our flight arrived at JFK the same time as the connection left. I called them and asked if we could leave home earlier and go through Atlanta and they did it with no problem. Arrived at MCO at 12:30 instead of 4:30. This year the latest flight leaving MCO with miles was at 12:30pm, we usually like to leave late afternoon. They moved that flight earlier twice, the second time I called and they moved us to a flight that leaves at 6:30pm! Look at their schedule and look for flights that you want and have them handy when you call.

I've had that happen before, I think on Delta. I looked up what flights worked best for my family, called, and they switched me with no problem. The person helping me asked what the problem was, and when I told her I couldn't leave from the airport before my other flight arrived, she laughed.

They were very good about it. Think of it as an opportunity to get new, even better flights. Good luck!
