Anyone going Geocaching this weekend? **NEW CACHERS...POP IN!**

Geocaching.com is very active! I've learned a lot just reading over the past few days.
Now I have to wait and save up so I can buy a GPS - I've got a disney trip coming up, so all extra cash is going to that!
At least geocaching will be a cheaper hobby than my Disney addiction!

Thanks for the info.

I hope geocaching is cheaper than my Disney addiction... we'll see!!!!!!!!

honugirl ...geocaching.com is the only site that gives the cache info...at least as far as I know. :surfweb: You can always run a pocket cache list to find out what caches in your area are available by wheel chair. If you want you can send me a private message with your zip code and I will run one for you, copy it and email it to you...if you don't know how to. Welcome to the fun and enjoy!

Thanks! I'll send you a PM later. :thumbsup2

OUCH, lilallybean! Hope all goes well with your neck! I sure wouldn't want neck or back surgery.

I think Geocaching.com has good info on their forums. I also check in on our yahoo boards from time to time. It's good for posting questions and getting answers back. If you go to yahoo's boards and search "geocaching" with your area, you might find something.

If you do a search on google of "geocaching," you might find that Buxley's and Navicache pop up with links. I visit both sites on rare occasions. For me, tracking my finds is enough on one site! :teeth: And geocaching.com does seem to be the "premier" site. They seem to have the most caches registered.

honugirl...I bought both my GPSs at Bass Pro Shops. But there are plenty for sale online whether they are new and through stores or used and on various sites. Even geocaching.com has a section under their forums with GPSs for sale. Someone on our yahoo board posted this morning about a Garmin with a good sale price at amazon. I agree...Geocaching is cheaper than trips to WDW! :lmao:

I just wanted to let you know, in case you weren't aware. But, there is an alternative to geocaching if you don't have a gps. It is called letterboxing. It is basically the same thing as gc, but you get clues rather than gps coordinates to find the stash. It really is like a treasure hunt. Here are the 2 websites that I use. There is a lot of helpful information on there.

Have fun!

Thanks! I think I'll check Cabela's one of these days and see what they have. :thumbsup2

Wow! I hope you're okay and it wasn't anything too serious. Make sure you follow your surgeon's instructions!! Too often we feel better and think we can do something, then hurt ourselves in the long run. Hoping you're up and out soon!

Monday morning I woke up with this horrible burning pain in my abdomen which my DH swore was just gas. I started throwing up a thick, mustard colored liquid and I KNEW it wasn't gas. I could barely drive DS to school I was so nauseated. It did, eventually, go away and I was like, "Dude if this is MORNING SICKNESS and I have to feel this way for three months, I will kill myself."
I was fine all of Tuesday and Weds morning around 12:45 I wake up again with same kind of pain, but worse than before. I'm nauseated, but I don't throw up. DH takes my vitals (he's a certified EMT basic) and when I tell him the pain goes all the way to 11, he decides to take me to the same ER where he did his clinical rotations for class.

We get there, they get me processed in, get me a bed and the dr. pops in. He pressed on the place where the pain was and I just about hit the ceiling. They started an IV (oh what fun THAT was:headache: ) and gave me some morphine which made it Happy Fun Time.:rotfl:

They wheel me back to do a sonogram. Yup,it's gallstones. Surgeon comes in says I can either go home with pain meds or I can go back and have it removed. Go home? What, is he out of his mind? GO HOME so I can eat something with grease in it and have this happen AGAIN?:faint:

So they take me back, give me more drugs:thumbsup2 and take out my gall bladder. After a few hours, they sent me home with pain meds (btw..have you met my friend Mr. Vic O' Din?:rotfl: ) and here I am. I'm not supposed to do anything strenous for at least two weeks. So no geocaching for me until at least a week from Weds.
Oh well..the caches will still be there.

Thanks Kycha - I know exactly where one of them is!
I think there's a cache at the same spot, so maybe I'll luck up and find both without a GPS.

sdarwkcabemanmy...

Wow! I'm so sorry that happened! Glad you had your surgery and are okay!! Definitely better to get rid of the problem than have it recur.

LOL! Yes, the caches will still be there after your recuperation. LOLOL! :lmao:

We've found a few letterboxes while looking for a cache. We get all excited that we found it, open the lid, and see a stamp. Bummer! It's not the cache! :lmao: One really had us confused because where we were matched the description and hint of a cache. There was a book inside a mailbox which made sense to sign. But reading those who signed before, we didn't recognize any names. I just figured this was it and my GPS was probably a few feet off from the cache owner's. Posted a find on geocaching.com. Got an e-mail from the owner that it wasn't the cache we found. :lmao: :lmao: She knew the letterbox was there. But she told us to keep it as a find.

I found my first letterbox!!
Woo hoo!
:cool1:
I didn't stamp it - I drive by it everyday to go to work, so I'll stamp it when I dig out my stamp I want to use.
It's only been found one other time - and that was by a family looking for the geocache.
I didn't stay to look for the geocache because we got snow last night - first time all winter!
I'm south of Nashivlle - I don't know how you people up north deal with the snow all the time!
The gloves made it impossible to look at the log book and I still froze!

Congrats! :teeth: Although I am not a letterboxer. LOL! Even with those we've found, I never picked up on it. I guess I like my GPS. :)

You're so welcome! My DH and I really enjoy letterboxing. Eventually, we will get into geocaching. But, at this point, I don't feel we really need a gps.

Had something similar happen to us. Went looking for a letterbox and found a geocache instead. I knew right away that it wasn't what we were looking for. So, we kept looking for the box. And man, was that box a bugger to find. We ended up doing the clues backwards to finally find it.

I'm feeling a lot better today than I have been over the last few days. I was actually able to get up and do some housework. :D

Glad you're feeling better, but skip the housework!! :goodvibes

Hi everyone--
I didn't read the whole thread so forgive me if my question has been addressed already.

I went geocaching with a family member last year and the kids and I loved it. It was a great way to get excersise and enjoy the outside.

On that trip we used an older GPS that belonged to my BIL. I guess it was designed more for hunting. It was black and white only and didn't have streets etc...

I have a Mio C320 Digiwaker. I tried to geocache with it only once, we got the the general area but never found the cache. It probably wasnt a good one to try since it was a micro.

Does anyone have any success or advice on using a new GPS to geocache with. Or if it it isn't recommended to use newer GPS's , I'd like recommendations to buy an inexpensive one that would be good for geocaching.

Thanks...Looking forward to hearing responses.

You probably can and even the best GPS units don't get you right on top of the cache, but in a general area.

I would look for caches that are listed as larger as well as easier terrain (say a 1-2 at most) for your first few caches. At least until you develop "The Force" (as somebody once described it to me), when you are able to find smaller caches more easily without having to try too hard.

I have have some success..2 finds and 4 Did Not Finds so far, but I haven't given up. I've got a list of caches I want to go seek out once the dr has cleared me healthwise and I'm dying to get at them.

Don't worry about trying to find caches in wooded areas. I bet if you put in your home address and a limited number of miles around that address (say 5 or 10, so you don't have to drive/walk too far) you'll find a ton of caches that are both urban and large/easy to find.

Feel free to PM me with any questions..I'm by no means an expert on geocaching but I've made just about every rookie mistake in the book.:lmao:

Happy Caching!

We started with a $99 Garmin e-trex until we decided if we were sticking with it or not. Then went to a better, more expensive GPS. There are lots in different price ranges. It just depends on the features you want and the price. Have fun! :teeth:

Glad you're feeling better, but skip the housework!!
Skip the housework? :faint: Surely you jest!;) I'm by no means a Kate Gosselin when it comes to cleaning my house, but I can't stand a totally cluttered house either.

Well, tomorrow is our area's group trip to go caching in the swamps of Virginia Beach. :lmao: There are about three caches out there that I had been dying to get...in the past. I no longer have the urge. :woohoo: Waders are required, and they said to get these in the cold months before the snakes are back out. :scared1: I will pass on these. LOL! To read about their fun and any caches nearby, you can try watching this...

GCTPE3

Not to mention that the cache owner has over 7,400 finds! :faint: I have no idea how he gets to cache that much other than he travels a lot for his job. Hmmm. Is he working as much as he's caching? ;)

YIKES!!! Not sure I would do this one either, even with a group. There is NOOOO way I would do it on my own! The last log on Feb 27th mentions a HUGE snake.....thats enough for me!:scared1: I enjoy an adventure, but no thanks!

Have you all heard about the geocaching related movie??? Check out the website FINDMETHEMOVIE. I have mixed feelings about it, I think it will be interesting tosee, but...will people start being stupid and doing things to caches? They are actually one of the sponsors for our Mega event here.
