Anyone getting worried about March Break Travel

I've mentioned earlier and i think it might bear repeating. This is a case of gathering information that has been put out by what i consider the 2 most reliable sources for any health related issues and then deciding what to do with that information in a manner that best suits you and your family's situation. It's not going to be the same conclusion for everyone so we shouldn't belittle others for their concerns or their ultimate decision.

First i look at
WHO Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak

And then for information regarding how this will affect my travel within and outside of our own country i will rely on what OUR government has decided
Government of Canada Health Coronavirus disease (COVID-19): Travel advice

It doesn't matter if i agree with either of these sources, they are what should be considered the most reliable for ME to make my decisions.

***ETA -- don't forget that Disney will place a bold, very hard to miss, update to any hours on both the home page of the website AND the opening page of the MDE app so don't worry about missing anything that they will decide on that might affect your holiday***

The only thing I would add is a possible discussion with your physician to determine your risk profile based on potential underlying health conditions.

This whole thing is a bit surreal to me. People hording TP and hand sanitizer. Can't use reusable mugs in coffee shops. No roll up the rim. Going on and on about washing hands. I mean, did people not wash their hands before? Is there not a risk of colds/flus/other viruses with the mugs? the only difference is this is a new virus instead of the ones we are familiar with.

I was talking to kiddo last night because he still thinks we may go on a cruise this summer. I had to say I am not comfortable with the idea, not because I think either of us will get sick, but because I cannot imagine being quarantined for 2 weeks on a ship or back in Canada if we are lucky enough to get picked up. I am less worried about being exposed and getting sick, and more worried about how people seem to be reacting to the possibility.

And of course now the dollar is dropping even more so affording Disney becomes less likely. I guess we'll see over the next few months what happens.

Confirmed cases are about to skyrocket in the USA because more tests are becoming available. I predict that will induce more panic. As mentioned above, it’s seeing a dramatic effect in the financial market . Overnight the American government made a recommendation that people not take cruises at this time. That’s pretty huge and likely to be very hard on that industry as well.
Things are going to get worse before they get better but as I’ve been saying, it will become very apparent if travel is a terrible idea . We just need to keep a level head and use common sense when making decisions.
I do plan to buy more non perishable goods to have on hand if we are sick or need to self isolate for the recommended 14 days. I do not plan to hoard or panic buy.

I am actually out of paper towels at the moment and am a little concerned that when I go to Costco to get more (this is where I usually get them) people will look at me and think "She's one of those people" (dooms day preparers). Felt the same way last week when I picked up toilet paper (down to our last few rolls)

The world is definitely a little topsy turvy these days.

Watching everything unfold from the safety and comfort of my germ free home. Still have until April 19th before I have to make a decision about our trip. What can possibly happen next.

lol, I was like that with the Lysol wipes. I needed them because I was out, not because I wanted a 6 pack in case of the virus.

Our trip to California is next week (first Disneyland for all other members of my family to Disneyland) and we're not planning on canceling, YET.

If things get way worse, we might, but at this point, it's a go.

I can't say I'm not concerned, but not to the point where I would lose several thousand dollars (AirBnB, non-refundable hotel and Air Canada airfare) if we decide not to go.

If you’re reading other threads about this, Americans seem to think this is nothing and that changing behaviours is a waste of time and bad for the economy. I’m curious to see how things shake down as the case numbers explode in the coming days. I’m not sure they are willing to do what is needed as a country. That attitude alone makes me want to avoid the US for a bit.

I am not sure we can make that generalization. My wife is American and she does not feel that way.

Us too. We go April 14th.

I am due for a regular Costco stock up. Just things like Frozen Fruit, Frozen Veggies, eggs, olive oil, fish... things that I know are better quality or better price there. We don't have one nearby but there is one in the town DH works in. He usually goes once a month or so on his lunch for us. He tried last week but the lines we dreadful... out the door and all the way around the side of the building just to enter. Now we think it was because that was the day they started making everyone sanitize their hands and carts when entering so it is slowing things down. Hopefully it's better this week. I just want my regular items in the house.

Common sense would be great right about now. There are 22 reported deaths in the USA due to COVID-19. If we extrapolate that out to the range of 2-4% R0 then the estimated cases in the USA should range from approx 550 - 1100 cases. As of right now they are reporting 603 cases. Cases will go up but I am still not sure any of the hysteria is warranted. We have extremes like Italy and Iran and then you have South Korea which is testing like crazy and their current R0 is less than 1%. Germany has 1150 cases and 0 deaths.

Plus, all the data lacks the simple context of age, among other info.

I think people need to really step away from the news and social media.

Actually just got back from Costco Innes Rd. Regular trip, not stocking up. A bit busier than a normal Monday noon. They had a staffer at the front wiping the handles of every cart coming in (nice). Lots of stock evident for those things that have been running low, I guess suppliers are keeping up with demand. They did have paper towel and toilet paper on the shelves. They did move the nitrile gloves to front of store, and quite a few takers.

It sure would be nice to know how prevalent this virus actually is in our own towns and cities. I wish they could do random testing in the community to see if it is out there in the general population or if it is still just being brought from other countries. If containment is still possible, perhaps people should consider self-quarantine when they come back from their vacations. If containment isn't possible, then what does it matter where we go?

Yes it matters where we go. If we’ve moved beyond containment and to mitigation, it is still essential to slow transmission—it will allow the healthcare system time to prepare for the incoming sick and to spread out scarce resources. Social distancing becomes more important than ever.

Case numbers going up is not a bad thing really - it's the number of deaths that matter - South Korea engaged in early and active testing and confirmed 7300 cases with only 50 deaths (last I read anyway) - that is a very low percentage. If most people who show symptoms fail to get tested then the death rate will be exaggerated as it will not include those who got sick and just stayed home and recovered. I know I have had the flu several times in my life and never once did I go and get it confirmed through testing.

The hording is beyond stupid. I would bet $ most of the people who are hording toilet paper and supplies do not wash their hands properly.
