Anyone getting worried about March Break Travel

Found this link this morning to an interactive map from Johns Hopkins that provides a wealth of information about the outbreak. I am a very visual person and have been craving a visual representation of what the situation really looks like. It's very cool, you can zoom in on area and get latest information on the cases and where they are located. Florida still at 3 cases, 2 in Tampa area, 1 around Sarasota. Nothing in Orlando area yet.

As you can see, cases in China appear to have crested, and a large percentage have recovered now. The overall death toll in China currently sits at 0.000216% of their population by my calculation, or 20 in every 100,000 people. For instance that would be the equivalent of 200 people in a city the size of Ottawa, or 1200 in the GTA. That doesn't sound like much more than the number of people who die from the complications of regular influenza every year. However, some of that is thanks to the restrictions and cautions put in place for containment, so do take appropriate measures. Just a little more food for thought.

This reminds me of being in the cruise terminal and having to randomly cough or sneeze and every passenger around you gives you this sneer of disgust...

when we were in line for a flu shot clinic several years ago my little one over hand sanitized her hands then put them
In her mouth . I will never forget the looks we got while I mouthed “Hand sanitizer “ at all of them

This is all just too much. I have tried to keep a positive outlook as I really want to go but it is challenging when I read everything people are saying. Lots of great information and some resources I never would have found on my own.

I think I have now decided no more news network watching (they are obsessed with Covid-19). No more reading these threads (on Covid-19). I will look at the situation on April 19th and make my call about going or not going at that time(will still have time to cancel my RO reservation). Hopefully things will be a little clearer, one way or the other, by then.
We're there the same time as you! Hopefully ....... anyways. We're just waiting it out to see what happens. I'm hoping because we (Canada and US) have had an opportunity to prepare before it hit here, that we won't see a spread like in China, Italy, etc. My kids are older and we don't have underlying medical conditions, but I'd worry about bringing something back to someone else.

This is where those Canadian Airmiles tickets pose a problem. I hope Disney will make some exceptions to the expiration date if people have to cancel because of the virus.

Do you believe in the tooth fairy? Don't count it. If it does happen, congrats.

As I wrote earlier, I'm not worried about catching Covid-19 while on vacation (more chance I will get it from work than while traveling imo). But with what is happening in SanFrancisco with he Grand Princess, makes my DH a little worried about quarantine and work. We have until April 15th for PIF on our Aug 2020 cruise so we'll wait for now but I also started at looking at flights to Vancouver and Calgary as a replacement vacation. The kids never traveled west of Niagara Falls so it could be fun and we would encourage the Canadian economy and tourism.

Beyond this trip to Florida we'll be staying pretty close to home this year. Our dog is really old and I can't bring myself to put her in a kennel or have someone else care for her. DH is staying home and working from home while we are away.

He just told me today that if we get sick while in Florida to give him 2 days notice and he will drive down and pick us up. What a guy! We won't need that but it's nice to know we have a non-airline way home if need be.

In a case of pandemic, the government will usually seal off that city to quarantine its people. You just need to look at China and Italy. So any kind of prediction is moot because it's simply unpredictable.

The way I look it... you either go and stop reading the news. Or you don't go and cancel everything. I think it's simply too worrisome to think about what if there is an outbreak. You will ruin the trip if you think too much.

Yes, but this does not happen overnight. The outbreak in China had been going on for weeks before Wuhan started to be sealed. Canadians were still flying into the area long after things were getting out of control. You will know long before a city gets sealed off. And again, there are (as of today) 7 cases in all of Florida, and zero cases in the Orlando area. Nearest cases are in Tampa. GTA is one of the biggest hotspots in North America with 27 cases - any signs of the OPP blocking off the 401 yet?

She didn’t say in case of an outbreak, she said if she got sick. If we are getting to the point that whole cities are being shut down, I doubt you would go in the first place @ottawamom so I wouldn’t be too concerned on that front. Common sense.

Wow! I love this map and info! Thanks for posting. Really puts it into perspective a little. Especially when there's just dots covering the affected areas instead of just colouring the whole state/province!

Pot calling the kettle black a little. You're the one spreading all the doom/gloom and anxiety around here.

Make peace with yourself and your choices. How you react to stressful situations can and will affect your holiday. Take precautions,,pack well, have a back up plan should the need arise. Others here are trying to calmly weigh their own pros and cons and make their own best decisions.
Best wishes to you.

THIS. This isn't the zombie apocalypse. Much like the Weather Network sells weather (OMG WORST STORM IN A CENTURY!!!!) the 24 hour media sells crisis. Today it's this one.

Yes, the COVID-19 is serious, and yes if you get it you will wish you didn't. Much like influenza. Or E-Coli. Or Norwalk. But it's unlikely to kill you - you have to remember we only have confirmed cases vs deaths ratios at this point, how many people have contracted it and not reported? I'm guessing 10x the number of confirmed cases but that's just me and statistics on normal flu-like outbreaks.

The problem with running doom and gloom scenarios is that in other threads on this board , and this one to a lesser extent, people are presenting their fears and opinions like they are facts. Misinformation at this point has serious consequences.

@MoreTravels if you're going in 3 days you will be home before the things get really bad (if they are going to at all). Go, wash your hands, take your vitamins and enjoy the sunshine. You'll be fine. In two weeks time you'll look back on this and think "why did I put myself through all that?" You'll be home safe and sound.

Once again THIS - plus you have a MUCH greater chance contracting COVID-19 in the GTHA than pretty much anywhere else in North America except a few specific nursing homes.

RELAX PLEASE! You will (almost 100% chance) be fine. The chance of dying in a car accident this year outweigh any risk this virus presents just as an FYI.

It is interesting to read through the posts on this thread. I think what everyone needs to remember is that you need to do what is right for you and your family. Only you can decide what is right for your family - cancel your trip or go on your trip.
There are still many unknowns with the virus and every day the information provided is changing as well as more positive cases of the virus being reported each and every day. While there are currently no positive results in Orlando, that is something that could change.
We went back and forth with our decision and then made the tough decision to cancel our upcoming WDW trip and yes, while we may not have caught the virus at WDW, it was the right decision for our family because we felt that we would be focusing on the virus and not enjoying our trip. We decided that we would postpone our trip until later in the year when the virus is either under control or stopped so we will be able to enjoy our time at WDW. While some may not agree with our decision, this was the right decision for our family.
