I do not know what is so auspicious about March&.maybe its the March Hare&er&rabbit&that is to blame.

:thumbsup2

There's also a lot of December birthdays in my family. DH and my birthdays are two days apart (his is the 9th, mine is the 11th). My dad's birthday is the 17th. Up here in the Northern Hemesphere, it must be the first nice day of Spring that does it.

I promised myself that I would never have a December baby. So DD25 was born on June 23...almost exactly six months away from Christmas.

However DD24 was born on September 15. I guess it was too much December partying.

Oh, and DD24 now has a wedding anniversary in December.

Thanks Brandi. Hope you're having a great one too.

Melbourne City Christmas

It's been such a crazy month for me that I wasn't sure I was going to find time to check out some of the lights in the city this year. I normally try to do a couple of walks round the city on Friday nights in the lead up to Christmas but with work and everything else, its been near impossible to make the time.

Thankfully for me, DH decided that he wanted to go in this year; so we took a drive in on Sunday night.

We are in summer; so this is really around 7.30 pm at night.

1223MelbourneXMas004.jpg

Roughly the same spot after 10 pm.

1223MelbourneXMas127.jpg

This spot used to be the old city square. It didn't work as a square...but during Christmas, the city tree goes up here.

1223MelbourneXMas009.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas011.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas021.jpg

We didn't stay to catch the tree lit up at night.

We were too busy checking out the Town Hall.

1223MelbourneXMas007.jpg

This year, the city decided to light up the Town Hall. Kick off time was at 8.30 pm – it is lit! Just we can’t see it because it was still pretty light out.

1223MelbourneXMas025.jpg

We did get a flash of colour….that’s a horse drawn carriage going by!

1223MelbourneXMas032.jpg

And the Melbourne trams did provide for heavy relief every so often. Sometimes they stopped…..

1223MelbourneXMas035.jpg

….sometimes, they just flashed by.

1223MelbourneXMas037.jpg

Anyone reading this will know what excruciating pain the 30 minutes we had to wait for appropriate light was with a “Can we leave yet” DS12 in tow.

(Continued from previous post)

The day finally turned dark enough for us to make out the spectacular lighting of the town hall.

1223MelbourneXMas071.jpg

I was particularly taken with the reds and oranges.

1223MelbourneXMas073.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas074.jpg

Sparkle time!

1223MelbourneXMas077.jpg

This scene was my favourite. It was a Norweigian forest scene with a beautiful owl perched on the clock tower.

1223MelbourneXMas081.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas081.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas082.jpg

Presents anyone?

1223MelbourneXMas086.jpg

The building had been beautifully lit.

1223MelbourneXMas091.jpg

I was standing next to Control Central and was lucky enough to find two young guys playing with their computer. Turns out they were the programmers. It took them about 4 hours to put the program together.
But it took them 3 months to collect all the images and put them together!

1223MelbourneXMas096.jpg

I did push my luck with DS and we made him stay for another rotation. The light and the sky had hit that wonder dusky twilight time. So, here’s an encore presentation for you (and me) to enjoy!

1223MelbourneXMas098.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas101.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas105.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas109.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas110.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas114.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas115.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas118.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas120.jpg

1223MelbourneXMas121.jpg

The whole display takes about 10 - 12 minutes to complete a rotation. The city puts the show on from close on sunset through to 11 pm everynight from the last weekend in November through to Christmas Day.

I was really glad to have had this opportunity to catch it this year!

Christmas Eve Dinner Food Porn

Merry Christmas to everyone! I hope that your Christmas was filled with family, food and fun.

Christmas for 2012 has come and gone; with only memories and picture remaining for reminiscing. That.......and all the leftover food!

My family traditions are such that we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. Over the years, with respective partners and their families, my mother has worked out that to keep family peace in her offspring (me and my brothers), it was better for us to shift the feasting to the night before so as the respective partners could spend Christmas Day with their families.

Our family feasting includes the various cousins, their families and uncles and aunts. Whilst not gargantuan in proportion, we do end up with quite a horde to feed. This year was no exception.......we ended up with 22 adults and 12 kids for dinner.

Another tradition that we have - we eat Asian fare for this feasting; with all of us siblings, aunts, cousins bringing dishes along for the pot luck.
Inspite of being an Asian family where it's what isn't said rather than what is overtly spoken that's important, I would say that we're a fairly normal family; which is that as a family, we are typically dysfunctional and functional at the same time.

So......As with everything familial, the cook-off has turned into something of an artform with a balancing act between competition, where everyone wants to amaze the family with their cooking skill (I blame MasterChef!); and some degree of collusion between the sibllings and cousins so that we end up with a fairly balanced offering for dinner.

I think we did fairly well this year. I think most of us have switched off the competitive cook-off and we brought tried and tested favourite dishes to the table!

Egg Curry - courtesy of my mother.

1224ChristmasEve003.jpg

Sambal, with deep fried anchovies - another one of my mother's offerings.

1224ChristmasEve009.jpg

My mother also made this mushroom vegetarian dish. We were blessed with 4 vegetarians for dinner on this night.

1224ChristmasEve017.jpg

Chicken Rendang - my dad's.

1224ChristmasEve005.jpg

A dry Chicken curry - my dad has specialised in chicken curry dishes.

1224ChristmasEve021.jpg

One of my cousin's brought this chicken soya dish - for the kids. It was delicious and all the adults descended on this!

1224ChristmasEve012.jpg

Another cousin and an aunt brought this Assam Shrimp curry. Fantastically hot and sour!

1224ChristmasEve015.jpg

My other cousin brought the Top Hats. You make the "hats" using a special mould and deep frying them. And then "top" it off with the filling. She made the filling vegetarian friendly.

1224ChristmasEve023.jpg

1224ChristmasEve024.jpg

My younger brother made paella. Why? Because he thought Spanish cuisine would fit in well with the night. Yup. That's my younger brother.

1224ChristmasEve029.jpg

My older brother made the Thai Shrimp.

1224ChristmasEve032.jpg

My SiL made another soya chicken dish.

1224ChristmasEve022.jpg

My contributions? With a pesky vegetarian in the house, I tend to volunteer the vegetarian curries.

Chickpea curry.

1224ChristmasEve004.jpg

Vegetable curry.

1224ChristmasEve008.jpg

My mother also put on a LARGE pot of rice to go with all the curries. It was a fantastic meal!

My first plate of food.

1224ChristmasEve035.jpg

I didn't get round to capturing my second. ;)

Dinner is not completed without dessert.

My younger brother brought the trifle. Not necessarily children friendly because of the amount of whiskey added to the jelly.

1224ChristmasEve040.jpg

My SiL brought the fruit platter.

1224ChristmasEve042.jpg

One of the cousin's made panna cotta.

1224ChristmasEve041.jpg

Others brought a raspberry chocolate fudge cake.

1224ChristmasEve044.jpg

Another even made an Asian dessert.

1224ChristmasEve046.jpg

My contributions this year were made with coffee drinking in mind. I also would like to thank a few of my 2D friends for providing me with links to some of these recipes. They were so fun to make!

Christmas sleigh - assembly only; no cooking required!

1224Christmassleigh011.jpg

Reindeer cups - filled with chocolate ganache.

1224ChristmasEve047.jpg

Rumballs! Not children friendly because of the rum content.

1224ChristmasEve052.jpg

With all this food, we all rolled out of the house, completely stuffed and with the thought of Christmas lunch still to come!

You said there are links to the sleigh and reindeer? No fair not posting the links. :)

Seriously, everything looks delicious. And it looks like your gathering was controversy-free as well.

OOPS! Squirrel!!

I went looking....couldn't find the sleigh! But as I took pictures as I was constructing them, I went and posted that up on the What's For Dinner thread.

Link to that post is here.

And the reindeer things? The recipe is here. I couldn't find butternut snap biscuits so I substituted with brandy snap cups. They were much larger than the biscuits would have been so one of these cups got shared between 3 - 4 adults!

(Sorry! :teeth:)

I can't even imagine the mayhem with 22 adults and 12 kids! :faint: The most we have nowadays is the four of us. If my sister ever could come down with her husband and kids, they would more than double our numbers. We have less than 10 in our whole family. 12 if you include my father's sister, husband and kid.

If we went back east there would be six more (my mother's brother and his kids/spouses/grandkid).

I grew up with large extended family gatherings for Christmas and really miss them these days. Your feast looks amazing and it's nice to see we're not the only ones rolling out the door after dinner. We were a fairly small group this year with 12 adults and 5 kids.

I love the encore of the X-mas lights!

The best part about those pictures of town hall ....I've been there now! ::yes::

Yummy looking food, but I really couldn't eat another bite thanks. :lmao:

And hey, we got a foot (30 cm) of snow overnight (4 PM to a little after midnight). The great thing about Buffalo, roads were plowed by morning, I'm back at work. (OK, maybe that's not so great.)

Pete

Thanks for the links. :) They're something I could do next year.

However, with the reindeer, looks like I have to convert everything from metric to American standards. Plus find a suitable substitute for Butternut Snap Cookies and Jaffas. I don't think we have those items up here.

And what kind of cream are we talking about? Regular whipped cream? Heavy cream? Half and Half?

I used heavy cream.

I didn't end up using Jaffas for the nose. I did get them but I used raspberry jubes/jellies instead. I would imagine anything round'ish and red would work.....even M&Ms.

I wouldn't consider that small either.

Thanks!

Hey I made these! With gluten free cookies for FIL :goodvibes

Sounds like you had a great Christmas eve!

Hope you had a great Christmas yourself. Won't they easy to make?

Christmas Day Lunch

With my family Christmas face time over and done with on Christmas Eve, and as DH’s family don’t celebrate this festival, Christmas day has become a celebration day for DH, DS and myself. Over the years, my parents have determined that they like my style of celebration best and it has become tradition that they come have Christmas lunch with us.

We’ve been doing this for quite a few years now and my menu has settled into a yearly routine. I’ve taken to preparing a more traditional roast lunch with summer fixins’. It is a nice contrast to the dinner the night before Christmas.

My table.

1225Christmaslunch022.jpg

I’ve pared the traditional turkey down to a rolled turkey breast. My chicken pantry prepares the breast for me and after I sear it on all sides, I slather the breast with herb butter before roasting. It is easier to cook and much more economical where leftover management is concerned.

1225Christmaslunch046.jpg

I did make gravy to go with it; but I seemed to have missed taking the picture.

For my pesky vegetarian DH, I put salmon cutlets on. The cutlets are stuffed with bread, pine nuts and dill. It is so easy and simple to prepare, looks Christmas-y and the cooking timing works well with the roast resting time and oven temperatures.

1225Christmaslunch048.jpg

Roast potatoes are a must.

1225Christmaslunch039.jpg

I’m still experimenting with the stuffing; but this one is nearly there.

1225Christmaslunch050.jpg

And because it is summer in Australia, I tend to throw a couple of salads together. As I’ve got a golden theme happening with this year’s table, I’ve added golden touches to the salad this year.

1225Christmaslunch032.jpg

1225Christmaslunch034.jpg

I always serve a plum pudding for dessert.

1225Christmaslunch052.jpg

The brandy snap basket filled with mango sorbet and diced mango was also in keeping with the golden touches this year.

1225Christmaslunch056.jpg

And with coffee, we had rum balls.

1223Rumballs013.jpg

I always enjoy hosting Christmas for my parents. And the mango sorbet was a hit with them. Seems like it might be a keeper for next year!
