Anyone Game? 2 Castles and a Road Trip TR! Last Day and TR Wrap Up! #2796; 10/01

So awesome. I cannot wait to see Harry Potter someday. It looks like I will probably see the one in Hollywood before I see the one in Orlando though. I love the look on your son's face. My son had the same look a lot on our recent trip.

Finnigans and looked great! I guess I'm too used to WDW but at the first picture of Finnigans I thought, 'wow, it's a transformation from the park outside'. But that's how it is at Disney too...

IoA looks amazing! And you're so right, why wouldn't Universal put shops in all those storefronts? Huge loss of revenue I would think. I hope they didn't do that with Diagon Alley.

I can't believe how empty this was. I am also a big Harry Potter fan, but so far it still has not convinced me that it is worth for us to head to Universal.

That was neat that you were able to go to IoA for early entry and see it all quiet that morning. It is nice to see IoA from a different view while it is empty that morning.

Great photos while in IoA especially at the WWoHP.

I couldn't believe how empty it was as well. Seems like everyone slept it.

Wow no one's there. Awesome!

What does Hermoine's dress do?

Looking forward to what's coming up! I'm always interested in reading and seeing WWoHP.

From memory, I think the tape measure at the bottom of the display goes up and down like magic.

Yes. I suspect that I may well head to the one in Hollywood sooner than heading back to Orlando. But I'd love to see Diagon Alley some day.

I think Universal learnt from WWoHP and put more shops in at Diagon Alley. Ka-ching!

I guess you have to decide if you want to go or not. :thumbsup2

The Bonus Castle in the Dark Side

This trip always started out as a vacation to two castles. But it didn't take me long to realise that I can't count. There was definitely another castle on this vacation. Let's just consider it a bonus, shall we?

After the colours of the other castles, this one was stunningly different. It isn't called the Dark Side for nothing, is it?

Early Entry had turned out to be a complete bonus for us.

Afterall, this is what the queue for every ride should be like, right?

You have to be able to fit in these in order to ride and strictly no bags allowed on the ride. The seats pivot, it feels like almost 360 degrees, whilst being held above the track by a robotic arm; and this ride is like nothing else you will find at a Disney park.

This ride is not a roller coaster but rather an experience....a Forbidden Journey really....through the Wonderful World of Harry Potter. For 5 minutes....you are transported into the reality of Harry; of Floo powder, flying broomsticks, Quidditch, whomping willows, dragons, spiders, Dementors....and it truly is magical. Contrary to their facial expressions, everyone on this Enchanted Bench LOVED this experience.

I could do this ride over and over and over again. I know that there is a bit of chatter about people experiencing motion sickness on this ride. That may well be the case, but not for my family. I will say that DS was a little disconcerted with the range of movement that the bench got to and when coupled with the visuals, he thought it was pretty extreme experience in a very cool way. "Best Ride Ever" were his exact words.

I did collect my camera before the time limit on the 'free' lockers was up. It's not a large locker and I can just about get my camera bag in it. Keep that in mind if you are bringing a bag into the park.

If you have the Star Card that allows you to get some free printing, make sure you decide at the photobooth section in Filch's Emporium whether you want your Forbidden Journey photograph printed or not. In 2013, you couldn't decide at the end of the day in the shop by the main gate if you wanted a print of your FJ ride.

Harry Potter merchandise is not cheap. But I've found it to be well made and incredibly authentic looking.

Hats off to the Hippogriff

We eventually headed on out of the Castle to take further advantage of our Early Entry.

Almost directly across the exit to Filch's, you'll see conventional looking rollercoaster tracks in the air.

But there is nothing conventional about the theming for this ride.

It is definitely pure Harry Potter. Or perhaps....in this case....pure Hagrid.

Don't be fooled by the look of the carts.

The basket-weaving makes it look like a kid's ride.

And as you head past the various displays, it almost feels like a kid's ride.

It might not look it from ground level, but you do climb up a little way up in the air on this attraction.

What goes up, must come down. Hang on to your hats! It's fast coming down this section.

It does come down quick and it is a short ride. I wouldn't wait a long time to get on this ride. But with early entry, this ride was walk-on for us. Well worth it.

The Wizard selects the Wand-wavers

Way too small! I think Universal completely underestimated the Harry appeal. Despite spending $265 Million on creating this area, Hogsmeade and the buildings are way too small.

There is no better example of this underestimation than heading into Ollivanders.

By this stage, the park had opened to the general public. We had just made it into the queue for Ollivanders before the majority of the people made it to this side of the park. I think we made it in as the second group for the day.

This interactive experience is held inside of the buildings. I don't think it holds more than 30 people inside at a time and the wait times for this can be rather long on a busy park day.

The Wandmaker Wizard is the man with all the power. Afterall, he chooses two lucky kids from the audience to come up and interact with him.

Yes, the Wizard chooses the Wand-Wavers for this experience. I had hoped that he might cast his eye over my DS' direction; but it was not to be. These two were sisters; so it made the decision easy for him. Rather like in the first book, the potential Hogwarts newbies are encouraged to wave the wand to see what happens.

For me, the effects could be better but there is no denying that it is a close representation of the book.

Eventually, both chosen ones find the perfect wand-fit.

It's not a long experience. I'm not even sure it takes up 5 minutes of time.

If the queue for this goes more than 3 turns, I would give it a miss or come back later.

Exit stage right and straight into Dervish and Banges. The merchandise and theming in here is dizzying! Feel free to buy a wand, school robes or a broomstick or two.

The space is rather confined.

Like everything else in here, way too small. But for Potterheads, go in and spend some time browsing. If nothing else, make sure you buy a postcard or two inside Dervish and Banges. You should be able to find somewhere to get an Owl postmark on your postcard.

We took the exit out of Dervish and Banges into the Owlery.

For those living in the US, I think there is a mailbox out here and you can get stamps (inside the shop?) to send the postcard home to you. I bought my postcards in 2010 and got them stamped with the Owl postmark. I think I brought them home with me rather than post them. They might have sold stamps for international postage as well; but I decided against that. Kinda cool to have Owl Post.

Breakfast at the Three Broomsticks

By this stage, we were three very hungry and happy Potterheads. Breakfast time.

Don't get too excited or fooled by the menu. It really is a basic buffet kitchen.

DH got the Porridge breakfast. I think his was the best breakfast of the morning.

DS and I got the Pancake breakfast. It was okay; but not brilliant.

The Three Broomsticks?

The theming and ambience is great in here.

It really is straight out of the movies.

For that alone, it is worth checking out.

I totally love it in here.

And on a hot and humid day, there is another reason for stopping in here.

Dream on, sonny boy. Nothing alcoholic until you're of age.

Until then, this is more your speed! So. Addictive!

We were highly amused by this sign.

There really is only one way to head out. Go out by the back door at the Hogs Head side of the Three Broomsticks. You won't be disappointed by the view.

We did take a bit of time out here for a closer look at the Castle.

I gather it's just a façade. Such a shame. There could have been something real cool developed up there.

Sweet Space

Despite what seems to be wasted merchandising space, Universal did get two shops right.

Zonko's is filled with tricks and games and all sorts of mind curiosities.

We were highly amused in here.

We might not have bought anything, but there was plenty in here to chuckle over.

There is definitely something about hats with long braids for my boys. Last night, it had been DS. Today, it was DH's turn.

Right next door to Zonko's is this little sweet spot.

And sweet it is! You can walk from Zonko's directly into Honeydukes on the inside.

It's light and bright and airy in here....when there is hardly anyone here.

I've always liked this staircase display.

But the point of this place is sugar.

Wall to wall sugar.

It's wonderful to see literary creations come to life.

Literally!

I wonder if that literal creation includes bogey flavoured jelly beans?

If that flavour really exists, this would be my idea of a tower of terror too!

Far better to chocolate overdose with these Cauldron Cakes!

And yes. We did indulge.

A very nice day at the WWoHP. Great pictures of Hogwarts Castle. The ride is great and i enjoyed it but I don't like to put my bag in the lockers since we can't bring any bags on the ride and they won't even let you take pictures or videotape where Universal is strict on those where Disney is okay on certain rides and shows.

Nice to see you were able to go in Ollivanders Wand shop. How long did you wait to go in the shop where it can take a while outside through the queue to go inside?

I never seen the breakfast at Three Broomsticks where the lunch is very nice. It is nice to see what the breakfast is at that restaurant.

Very nice PiO.

Great pics. I love the way the castle is so true to the large model we saw at Leavensdon Studios in London. The new wand shop in Diagon Alley sounds like it is coping much better with the crowds...and they certainly learnt their lesson about making use of shop space though I have read they are still quite small inside. We shall see for ourselves next month :yay:

Wow, your pics are fab! We haven't been to US/IOA sine '03. Things have changed so much I'd like to go back now.

I am just soaking this all in, absolutely loving all your photos! Thank you so much, I really didn't know what I've been missing.

I've had such a heck of a time keeping up! I can't take that ride through the castle! You're right about it pulling you every which way. I was sick for a couple hours after riding it. I do enjoy the scenery there in Hogsmeade. I wish we would have been hungry when we hit the three broomsticks. We didn't end up eating there, just a small peek inside. Maybe some other time.

Definitely the on property perks make it worth the stay for the early entry and the FOTL pass!

The theming is really spectacular. I do end to struggle with motion sickness so Forbidden Journey is probably not for me. I do wonder however if they have a chicken exit.

I can answer that. Since the queue is so highly themed and fun, there is the option to sit out while your party rides or just leave after walking through the queue.

When I went through it, I was letting people go ahead of me because I wanted to see it more and enjoy the moving paintings and stuff. All those people just ran right through without stopping to look.

Universal really did WWoHP right although the shops are way too small. I have heard that is JK Rowling's doing....she was aiming for correct proportions. I cannot wait to go check out Diagon Alley....I'm going to have to sneak in a trip some of these days.

Thanks. That sounds like an option then.

The world of Harry potter looks to be alot of fun, and sweet shop has something for everyone I am sure.

So what was your favorite spot in Hogsmeade?
