Anyone Game? 2 Castles and a Road Trip TR! Last Day and TR Wrap Up! #2796; 10/01

That musical museum was amazing - but I give you a gold star for being diligent in keeping up the practice and finding places for your DS to practice while overseas. My DD would love to visit as she is the musical one in the family -not DH or I. Still amazing what you find down byways in the world!

Wow PIO! You are an updating machine! With the way I'm lagging on my TR, you'll probably reach the last night before I do!

You've inspired Fran and I with the MIM. Once we get moved into the new house, we are now planning a trip to Phoenix, it will be a Triple-D and MIM trip. We'll leave on a Wednesday and come back on Saturday which will give us two potential days at the museum, and if we don't need a second day there, we can always find something to do....shopping? :confused3

I've been to Sedona several time, but they were always for a band tour and it was a two hour lunch stop. I never quite "got" the place, but I'm guessing in two hours being dropped off from a bus in the touristy shopping area, I'm not surprised. I will be interested to see what there is to REALLY do in the area. The pizza looked good. I'm about to have dinner, and I wouldn't mind if those were my dinner! :thumbsup2

WOW! What a wonderfully, stunning landscape you encountered on your drive!! Just absolutely beautiful!

There's that delicious looking pizza again! Glad to read it was as yummy as it looks and that you all enjoyed your dinner!

Also, so happy to read your DS did great on his piano test!! :thumbsup2

Fantastic updates! :)

Oh yes, I forgot to comment on your beautiful pictures of the scenery. I do love the natural beauty of that part of the country. You captured some great shots. I even recognized the outcroppings from my trips.

Also, yay for DS! I know all about Canada and the UK with their exams, makes sense that the Aussies would have them too.

Good to hear DS did so well in his exam - you should be proud of him! Looking forward to more pics since we just did the drive through.

Just for Paula to compare (sorry PIO-not trying to piggyback the post).

Uluru (Ayers Rock) at sunrise (base walk)

and sunset

and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) at sunset

I think red rocks all look fantastic at sunrise and sunset!!

and I love that you got the full moon into a pic! Ok I'll stop adding bits and go back to my corner to await some more feast for the eyes (and stomach!)

Firstly, thank you everyone for posting comments. I am so glad that the road trip part of this TR is something that you're all reading and following along with. Thank you again.

OMG, that scenery is absolutely stunning. I could not get enough of the photos. I think Arizona may need another look.

Corinna

Corinna - I'm only just getting started on Arizona. :rolleyes1

How wonderful! The country out there is just so magnificent! Glad you got to see it- and apparently, again! That is exactly why twenty minutes into Cars at the theater, I declared my intent to buy the DVD! They really nailed it! (Of course, it doesn't "read" the same on TV as it did in the theater...)

The problem is, you do want to stop every ten feet for a new exciting must have unbelievable picture!

That pizza looked pretty darn good too!

:)

Jud

:lmao: Were you sitting in the back seat with DS??? That's exactly how we were.

Wow, you've just added another half a dozen locations to my wishlist... :lmao: I'm so fascinated by deserts, and so desperate to get to Arizona for a real desert road trip!

Which part of Arizona? It's a big state and there is so much to see.

What absolutely stunning countryside....!! I've been to the southwest but not that part of AZ. I'll bet it *was* hard to drive with all that distraction!! Just gorgeous.

.

::yes:: And we weren't the only ones. That stretch where we could see the Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock was one where everyone was slowing down and enjoying the view.

Now I'm hungry and want to take a road trip. :thumbsup2 Excellent writing and photos. I didn't realize Sedona was so varied in its landscape. Super cool.

Thanks. Perhaps you might take a road trip to Sedona. If you're an outdoorsey family, there's lots there to keep everyone entertained.

Very nice pictures of the countryside. I could easily see you telling DH to pull over to the side of the road and get all of those scenic pictures.

The food looks very nice especially the Melanzane Parmagiana pizza.

In the end and for time purposes, I was taking pictures from inside the car. It worked out quite well.

Truly a beautiful area. I was cracking up at the "no service" part with your DS along with it being too quiet and in the boonies.

You should have sent all of us some of the pana cotta to try it looks awesome.

:scratchin And what is wrong with the time-honoured DisTradition of licking your screen????

:confused3

I need to get to Sedona. The scenery is stunning!

That meal looked fantastic too.

Let me know if you ever get up to Colorado...I'd be happy to play tour guide here...we have some fantastic scenery too...and lots of places with no cell service!

Jill in CO

Jill.....I did hit your state on this road trip for a short time. Maybe next time. I think both DH and I loved what we saw of Colorado.

The landscaping does remind me of Carsland, especially the picture of the truck pulling out of the parking lot. It is really beautiful there. Despite living relatively nearby, I have never been. A friend of mine goes every year. She talks about retiring down there. It is now on my list of places to see even though the lack of cell service may have me crying too.

You should head down and check it out. I think it is definitely somewhere DH and I could retire to.

The lack of cell phone service is pretty good in Sedona. It's just where we were staying is right on the edge of wilderness. You'll see what I mean a little bit later along. But it was nothing that WiFi couldn't fix. Once we were in the house, it was fine.

Ya know, when I was a kid, we didn't have yer fancy cell phones! There was one phone in town and you had to walk uphill both ways to get to it! In snow!

:rotfl2:

Jud

Jud.....I was born and lived in S-E Asia for quite a number of childhood years. We didn't even have television in those days. :lmao:

LOL......I'm with you Jud......I could live without a cell phone with no problem at all.
And there is definitely a beauty to the desert that is unbeatable.

When I am on holiday, I want to DisConnect. But my boys can't. In a way, I think one of the reasons I was happy with the itinerary for the road trip was because it meant that they couldn't just go surfing on their devices.

Yes, love love love the beauty of Arizona desert.

Belatedly catching up - I still think DL version is better than Paris. My diary notes say that DLP was longer than the US version and good, but DL still wins in our books for atmosphere.

and our poor children - DD still has memories of terror in DL, first visit age 6, because of all the scary moments we subjected her to - like Indiana Jones, The Matterhorn, Haunted Mansion. She forgets all the soft rides she enjoyed. My diary fails me here though - I ran out of steam (how unusual!) and can't believe I have no record of what we did or thought to refresh our memories of this visit (it was at the end of a long trip to Europe first). She now enjoys HM, but not as much as us as we can still remember being blown away by the special effects back in the early 1980's which are ho hum now. She says she can see how back then it must have been mind boggling...and she LOVES Pirates and Peter Pan like us and IJ except sometimes she feels a bit motion sick on it.

I'm so glad to read this.

I've met your DD and if my DS turns out as well adjusted as she is, Disney trauma or not, I'll be very happy.

Thanks. But somehow, I don't think DS would second your gold star nomination. :rotfl:

What a lovely first day on the road!

It really did set up the pattern for the rest of the trip. :thumbsup2

You're going to the MIM and Guy Fieri???? I'm envious. I hope that you and Fran enjoy the MIM. There's always a danger in writing destinations up on the Dis.....what one person enjoys might not necessarily be another's joy.

BTW - check out the calendar of performances and special events on the MIM. You might find something there that you'll like to go see and plan the trip around.

In some respects, if you don't want to get out and about in Sedona, there's really not much to it. The restaurants are nice, there are lots of spas and resorts but it's all about the outdoors, jeep rides and walks.

Thanks, TM. You know that pizza was for you, right? That was when I was thinking of you and your first night at WDW. :thumbsup2

Double wow and a oh my to Sedona! Those hues of orange and red are just spectacular. Like the fall in New England but in rock form. I wonder is that what Aryes rock is like PIO? I would love to see that one day.

That pizza porn looks yum. I could dive right in. What an amazing adventure and I think it's wonderful you bought your DS to the spot where he was a twinkle in your eye!

Thanks Paula.

I see Wendy has posted pictures of Ayres Rock or Uluru below; so it'll give you an idea. We went a few years ago and only have film pictures.

The countryside is very different. It's pretty arid around Uluru and Kata Tjuta (the Olgas). And aside from those two rock formations, the rest if very flat. But even the sand is red; so it's just red, red, red with dots of green from the scrubby/desert bush that's out there.

I went in October and whilst it was spring, it was still very hot. We were heading out early in the morning and late in the evening and avoiding the hot afternoons.

There is another area - King's Canyon - about 2 to 3 hours away from the Uluru resort area. If you ever head that way, plan for the extra day to get to King's Canyon. The walk through there and the country there is amazing.

Good to hear DS did so well in his exam - you should be proud of him! Looking forward to more pics since we just did the drive through.

I'll be in Melbourne; if you want to come visit. Skier_Pete can vouch for my cooking and the fact that I don't have any skeletons in the closets in my house....if you're up for a home cooked meal. :thumbsup2

I've been out of the Science game for quite a few years. Is this something to do with genetic sequencing? If so, I know nothing. I stayed well away from that side of science (just a personal thing and the fact that I sucked at Genetics).

i see no worries! Not for the faint hearted!

How far is Aryes rock from you? And was Picnic at Hanging Rock true?

It's in the middle of the country. It will take about 3 - 4 hours to fly to get to it; no matter which capital city you are in Australia.

There were a bunch of school girls lost at Hanging Rock. How true the book is to real life? Anyone's guess.

An Early Morning Walk

Rise before the sun
Excitement fills the cool air
Sneaking out, no son

This morning, DH and I snuck out of our accommodation for an early walk. There was a small trail nearby and that was our cue to get out and about before six.

Yes....we are horrible parents. We ran away from our 13 yo DS. But it's okay. We left a note.

Dear DS,

We've gone for a walk.
Don't worry, we'll be back soon.

Love,
Mum and Dad.

I'm not sure who was more worried. DH or me. As we stumbled over the pebbles of the dry creek bed.....

......we kept hearing the crunch of the stones under our feet. It might have sounded like the cries and screams DS was making in our mind but the pebbles stabbing the soles of our Disney wearing feet felt a lot like big hot rocks to me!

I kept imagining DS awake and prodding into the voodoo dolls he was making of us. Of course, in Sedona, the voodoo dolls would have been little towers or cairns of stones.

In the meantime, DH and I missed the left fork that I knew we needed to take (but DH insisted we needed to keep walking straight) and we completely missed our view of Cathedral Rock.

By this time, we were both freaking out about DS' being awake and we figured we needed to head back. Yup. We were really pushing up daisies by this stage.

DS? Despite the parental mind games I was playing over and over and over, he was still fast asleep.

Our Accomodation in Sedona

I've deliberately left posting about our accommodation til now. Afterall, what with the darkness of last night and the early morning walks and getting out and about, I only finish taking pictures of the place on the morning we left.

When planning this trip, I had decided that for this vacay that wherever possible, we would look for alternative forms of accommodation aside from the standard motel/hotel experience. Given what and where Sedona was, I checked and found that there was a relatively vast supply of Vacation Rentals (By Owners) available.
So, using the VRBO website, I found something that seemed to meet my requirements. I think you may have gathered that we were out in the middle of nowhere from last night's post. Well....we do take a left turn off the main 89A highway; and it is on the edge of Sedona. From that left turn, there is a turnoff where you see this view. We'll be staying in one of those specks of roofs out there.

This is the street the house was located down....we clearly had neighbours; and the little speck of red you can see in the distance is our Hertz rental car parked outside the home.

The outside of what was our home for the 3 nights.

The view from the street. The owner lived in the house next door. They were very quiet and we only caught a glimpse of them once.

When you enter the front door, it opens up into a room that they’ve used as a dining area.

The kitchen is on the other side. The owner had left a pile of material about things to do in Sedona, including maps of the local trails. DH was leafing through them the night we arrived – and still missed the left fork on the walk!

The kitchen was well kitted out.

And the owner left coffee for us. The home brew here turned out to be one of the few places where we would have decent coffee to drink.

Heading into the main section of the house, we found the sitting area. It was separated into the library area.....

....and the sitting room area. The washing machine and dryer were behind that white sheer curtain.

There was one bedroom downstairs. This one was commandeered by DS.

There was a full bath ensuite to this room.

Our bedroom was upstairs.

There was also an ensuite upstairs. No bath, though.

Our balcony.

Looking down into the garden.....

....and outdoor decking area.

The house came with a spa. I had arranged for this to be turned on. Sadly, we never got to enjoy it.

I was to enjoy the garden on two of the mornings we were here. We picked up some supplies at the local Safeway.

Breakfast was a delight out here.

More importantly, the place came with free WiFi. So once my city boy of a DS had gotten over the shock of No Service last night and we arrived here, he was happy enough. But it was still too quiet for him!

For DH and myself, we were very comfortable in our abode and very happy to have decided to go the VRBO route. We did pay a little more for the house than staying in a hotel room; but we did end up with two bedrooms, two bathrooms and plenty of living space with all the comforts of home.
Aside from mobile coverage, what else do you need?

Hi! I hopped over here from Luvchefmic TR. Took me a while to get caught up but I am now. Way too much to comment on at this time but I will say that I loved the Disneyland part. I'm planning to get out there in the next few years so it's aways fun to read TRs from there.
