Anyone familiar with Catskills?

We are thinking of vacationing in the Catskills next summer (I can't take summer beach vacations anymore because of health issues). We found a lovely property in Athens and we are wondering what the area is like, what the temperature would be like in late June and early July, and whether it would be a good vacation spot for DS12 and DD17 (then) who love riding bikes, water recreation, etc.

We got to a little town near Phoenicia -- we have friends that own a ski chalet in Lanesville. It's near Hunter Mt. We love the Catskills. We like to hike and there is a little swimming lake by Bellayre ski resort that we go to. The weather is a little bit cooler than we are used to, mostly in the evenings. They have a resident bear that visits, I've yet to see him. I hope you enjoy your vacation.

Do you (or anyone else)know anything about Athens, NY? We are hoping to stay there a weekend this fall to look at a property we might rent next summer. I know it is about a 4 hour drive, but have no idea of whether it would be a nice place to stay in the fall, or what places would be nice/romantic for DH and me to have a weekend getaway.

The most romantic place in the Catskills we've ever been able to find is a B&B called the Albergo Allegria. They have a web site. In addition to the usualy "in the main house" rooms, they have several carriage suites with private entrances. We stayed in one of those, and it was lovely, romantic, and very quiet.

We are looking at Carl's Rip Van Winkle Inn (idea of log cabins with fireplaces is irresistable); The Windham House; and the Winter Clove Inn.

It looks like a gorgeous area!
