Lets say I have a DVC studio reserved and get there and ask if they have on one bedroom avail for the time I am there. I flirt real nice and ask to be upgraded to that room.

Well...IF there is a 1 bedroom available, you might get it, but expect the extra points to be immediately deducted from your point account as well.

Remember, this is a timeshare, and you don't have access to more than you own, so if you don't have the points, don't expect to get it.

it's happened a handful of times from what other posters have reported, but pretty much only in cases where the room you booked has to be closed for maintenance and they don't have a comparable room to put you.

as others have said, timeshares are different than hotels.

For DVC, I don't think it would happen (if at all open, I could see them upgrading someone on cash would happen before someone getting upgraded on points).

But it does happen at other time shares. My Aunt owns a Hilton timeshare, she had booked a studio for her, my mom, and my sister for an Orlando trip two weeks ago. When they showed up they got upgraded to a 2 bedroom unit. No explanation as to why they got an upgrade. Could have been a maintenance issue like previously posted.

We were upgraded from a studio to a 1 bedroom once, while staying at BWV. No additional points were charged for it.

You can wink and flirt all you like, but they will still deduct the points from your account. If you want a one bedroom, book a one bedroom.

But I'm going to bet that was because there were maintenance issues with the studio you were supposed to have....or...someone else "self extended" a stay, and they had nowhere else to put you.

One year we were upgraded from a two-bedroom "standard view" to a two-bedroom "preferred view" room.

Yes, us sort of too. We booked a 2 bedroom dedicated at BCV with a sofa and Q in the second bedroom and was delighted to find 2 Q beds instead.

A few years ago I had an off season reservation at Hilton Head for a one bedroom. When we checked in, the 2 of us were upgraded to a two bedroom. :confused3

No complaints.

As others have covered, it can happen, it shouldn't happen very often. There is a stock of points which we all pay for which are for maintenance issues, ie broken bathroom in the studio your are assigned, no other studios are available you are upgraded to 1-bedroom, the points come out of that pool.

There are two reasons for this first and for most there are people who will always book at least 1 category less than they want and then raise a stink until they get upgraded, basically paying less than everyone else does, which causes the whole system to break down.

The other reason is there is a fixed number of points at a resort per year they sell most of them if they start giving away rooms then they could end up having more points outstanding then being spent. At the end of the year the points spent needs to equal points used. Think of it as a non-profit.

It's not 100% that way since I can bank and borrow, but this is the reason you can't bank for ever or borrow 5-10 years out. You can also use points at other resorts and other owners can come to my resort (which I suspect more or less balances out each year.)

It has been a few years ago ,(maybe 3) but we got a upgrade from a studio to a one bedroom . They did not charge us extra points .

I don't think you would be upgraded without extra points unless there is a problem with your studio and they don't have another to give you. I'm not sure what happens if something goes wrong in your room that is a big inconvenience. Maybe then they upgrade you to compensate for the inconvenience but I am not speaking from experience, nor do I recall hearing of that happening. I would be careful asking for an upgrade because the CM may interpret your request as wanting to use additional points to upgrade. It would not be fun to realize points were taken from your account when you thought you got a free upgrade.

I was upgraded once at BWV from a standard view studio to a water, river, view 1 bedroom. We checked in during a torrential rain storm during hurricane Wilma and the ceiling in the lobby was flooding the lobby with water. They asked if we would be willing to switch to another room tan requested due to some roof issues. We said no problem thinking that we would get a different studio room instead we found ourselves in a 1 bdr which was great. the only issue was that they tried to charge us the extra points in error. They fixed it the next day

so it does happen

Never happened to us at our DVC rooms. However, we have been upgraded at our Sheraton Vistana Villages timeshare, but it was because of a problem with internet service in the room we were given. :cool2:

We were at HHI from August 30th to Sept 3rd and my husband called me over when he was checking in and said they are overbooked on the 1br's and they wanted to upgrade us to a Grandvilla for the first night. I couldn't say yes quick enough:cool1: They ended up putting us in a 2br for the other days because they were still booked.
