I currently have ressies at BCV for the end of Jan. We just purchased a resale and have 279 pts. to use by 1/31 or we'll lose them (they're already banked pts). So....I need to switch the contract pts being used for the reservation. I've already checked and there's no more availability for a 2 bdrm. for most of the nights we'll be there. Has anyone ever had any luck canceling a ressie with one set of pts and rebooking using another? I believe I have to do this in this fashion....is this correct?

Sometimes disney will work with you in the resale case. I don't know about points already banked. I would call and talk to a supervisor at MS and see if you can work something out.

If there is a waitlist for the villas you want during the time you want, and if you cancel, you will not be able to rebook. But if there is no waitlist, you should be able to cancel and rebook - as long as the CM is quick enough. Another person could be on the phone with another CM wanting those days.

However, you can't just swap points from one contract to another if there is a waitlist.

I would cancel and rebook the nights where there IS availability and waitlist for the rest. Then have them connect all the reservations together so you don't have to move between villas when you get there.

I'm not sure if you can waitlist for something you already have though...

I did this for our March 2008 vacation to AKV. I booked with my AKV points as soon as I could and then at 7 months called each day to trade out my AKV points for WVL points. I had more than enough points so I was able to book the new night with VLW points BEFORE canceling the night with AKV points. You should be able to do the same.

It's not usually an issue to cancel a night or two at the beginning or end of a reservation. However, in my experience, you won't be allowed to cancel a night in the middle of the reservation without canceling the whole thing.

Anyone who wants to "substitute points" in an existing reservation should ask the CM lots of questions before anything is canceled to be sure the whole reservation isn't lost.

It's my understanding that points can be reallocated under specific conditions.

1. Suppose you have two reservations, one used banked points and one did not. You cancel the one that used the banked points. In certain cases you can reallocate those points to the other reservation and free up the regular points so they can be banked.

2. You purchase a new add-on. You have an existing reservation using next year's points. The add-on came with new current year points. You may be able to bank the new current year points, then use them for the reservation per the same situation as in #1 above.

3. You cannot just reallocate points under these circumstances:

  • You made the initial reservation at more than 7 months out using home resort advantage. You cannot later just reallocate and use points from a different resort, thus bypassing the home resort advantage.
  • You cancel a reservation and points become holding points. You cannot reallocate them to another existing reservation.
  • You have multiple membership numbers, possibly with the same or different use years. You cannot make a reservation under one membership number, and then change it to use points from a different membership number.
To do any of the options in #3 above requires cancelling the existing reservation, and then making a new reservation, subject to availability.

So in your case, assuming that 1)the resale contract has the same use year month as your existing contract and it has been added to your current 'master' contract as an add-on purchase and not as a brand new contract under a new membership number, 2) the new points you purchased have the same resort as the points used for your existing reservation, or if the new points are a different resort, that you did not make the initial reservation more than 7-months ahead, then you should be able to have MS just reallocate the new points to the existing reservation, and free up the current reservation's points. It would not be necessary to cancel and rebook. If any of the above does not apply, then you can only cancel and make a new reservation, pending availability.

Our resale contract finally closed and we're in Disney's system for the new contract!!! I did have to cancel our existing ressie for Jan. and rebook using our other contract (we had banked pts that we had to use by Jan.31 or we'd have lost them so it was necessary to do). We were originally at BCV and since there was a waitlist, we lost that ressie but were able to rebook at VWL for 5 of our nights and SSR for the other 3. We're waitlisted for the 3 nights at VWL but if it doesn't come through it's ok. Thank you to all of you for the info. I felt so informed when I called MS!
