Anyone else worried about fall supplies?

Toilet paper, hand soap, cleaners, flour are hard to find now. We are deep into a second wave with bad projections. I’ve seen the items fly off the shelves this week. Stores are rationing now.

Sorry things are bad again. What area are you in?

I was at Costco today. They opened at 9am and by 9:30, they were out of Bounty and restocking the Kirkland TP shelf. Yesterday, I heard they were out of everything, including specialty cheeses.
A local DISer gave the tip that the Costco location was having toilet paper shortage today (they've been limit 1 for a while as well as paper towels and Kleenex, etc).

I have been saying for the past week that the next time we go we needed to get more for our upstairs. Whelp now that's an issue. Went today and they had some it not much Charmin and no Kirkland. We were able to order online though to be delivered as Charmin was not as much toilet paper as Kirkland. We had to do that a few months ago for Kirkland paper towels.

When these 'fears' of shortages start circulating and sending people on a hoarding spree, sure wish the stores would limit items in advance that some people deem necessary to hoard - toilet paper anyone?? Then, people that needed it could find it.

Yes they should have alway kept the limits in place and stop offering promotions. Why is there BOGO on just about anything non-perishable in a grocery store these days?

Why does everyone run out and buy as much toilet paper as they can when there is a new disease around? This illness does not give you gastro-intestinal issues. Yes, they run out of toilet paper because everyone is running out to buy it. Why?

Part of the reason it was in short supply in the spring is because people suddenly stayed home. And instead of using commercial paper in offices and schools, they were using TP packaged for consumers. Hopefully they are geared up this time and it won't be the same level of shortages.

Fear of shortage is part of it. I get it even if it annoys me. I needed to get some just to get some more (we're down to one 6 pack Kirkland upstairs which is about the time I would normally purchase more; sometimes doing that at two 6-packs left), I'm not interested in stock piling it just was looking to replenish.

If news articles would ease off on writing articles day after day about concerns these past few weeks people wouldn't feel as anxious about it. That anxious feeling is what drives people to purchase it even if they don't need it. Then it becomes like a light switch, one day you're okay and the next you get this panicky feeling like you need to get the stuff now. Just about everyone at Costco this evening had a Charmin package in their cart. Most of them were likely purchasing Charmin because KIrkland wasn't available. People weren't really stock piling on other stuff; seeing their carts normal levels so it's not, yet, like it was in the spring when it was a run on just about everything.

maybe it's b/c my state had the first reported case so we started seeing people panic buying a bit ahead of what others saw (and reported here on the dis)-we've NEVER seen buying limits lifted, at least in our neck of the woods (or from online retailers that were selling for delivery here like costco/target). the only bogo deals i've seen since last february have been in 2 categories-

non staple type food/non perishables-artichoke hearts, steak sauce, pickles, jarred sliced hot peppers...(they've had this type of sale at a national chain about 3x a year forever around here),

meat-but again, it's a specific national chain that does it and when they do they increase the price of the featured meats so it's more of a 20% price reduction overall. these were not being done when meat was a bit less plentiful locally (ad would say it but signs in stores would advise they couldn't honor due to purchasing limits locally).

Even after all these months I still get anxious when my extra stock of meat, cleaning supplies, and canned goods starts getting low. It was so long before there was a reasonable supply in stores that I still fight the urge sometimes to stockpile things even when I have enough.

Actually that's not true for some people. I have a good friend who had it and one of his biggest symptoms was gastro-intestinal. Lasted for 11 days (that's a lot of toilet paper). That is clearly not why people are hoarding but I wanted to clarify that gastro-intestinal issues is a symptom.

Yes I was going to post a similar reply. It’s not in all cases, but definitely happens.

When I last went to Costco, they TP on the end of every aisle. I think, this prompted more people than normal to buy TP in the last week.

We were fine around here as recently as last weekend, stores fully stocked, but then on Wednesday the county supervisor starting making threats about a lockdown. Sure enough, yesterday when I went out to do my normal shopping I ended up having to go to 3 different stores before I found any toilet paper or paper towels.

Here we go again.

For me, here in Michigan, we are waiting to be shut down again. Things are pretty bad. I'm still struggling to find the balance of having enough for a while, and not buying so much I look like I belong on Hoarders.

Yup but that actually feeds right into the fear of shortage bit. We really don't need to be like we were in the spring. We went to Walmart yesterday and toilet paper...gone gone gone..but the only thing we noticed also very sparse was pasta. We were not in the bread aisle so couldn't tell ya on that. We just needed more spaghetti having used up what we had earlier this week. Meat was still plentiful (at that time). Everything else was fine at that time. And it's bad here in the metro too as far as community spread. Some new, though limited in what they are, restrictions start for us in my county tomorrow and run through end of Jan. The news has been talking about it and talking about it and like I said light switch boom now everyone is panicking that toilet paper won't exist....

If people who ordinarily wouldn't get a good amount of stuff would hold off on "I need to get enough to get me through several months" it wouldn't cause all this flurry of mess. People would be able to get online orders or curbside if people didn't just go buy up all the stock. I'm all for having some to last and I've championed in the past about people having more individuals in their families. But the toilet paper just suddenly up and disappearing after it's been fine for like 5 months in my area is not related to that at all. The people who said "I'll buy a package whenever I'm out" aren't even part of the problem because the stock was still finding its way to the shelves. Things that were well stocked just up and disappearing is because people are nervous it won't be around when they need it and we don't need to be like that- shut down or not you'll (general you here) be part of the very problem creating sacristy for everyone.

*I exclude cleaning supplies and disinfectant sprays because that's been largely miss since the spring.

I went to the grocery this morning to pick up a couple things, and the only thing they were completely out of was shower cleaner and disinfecting wipes. TP and paper towels in stock with purchase limits we have had since spring, plenty of toilet cleaner and spray disinfecting cleaner (bottled, not cans), and no noticeable shortages of food products. I was there when they first opened so I could shop before work, so that may have made a difference. I just bought TP and paper towels at the wholesale club a couple weeks ago, so I didn’t buy any. It was tempting though, even though I don’t NEED more.

Having a bit of a panic attack now--word is our Governor is going to shut the state down later today, for at least 3 weeks. I can get by for that long, but with my working retail and it being almost Thanksgiving, I'm really worried about having a job to go back to.

I'm so sorry. I'm sure lots of people are right there with you having the same concern.
