It amazes me that people actually want a kitchen and washer/dryer on vacation. There recently was a thread about some people that were renting a 2 bedroom unit, because the mom wanted to have full kitchen and laundry. Well, their total for their trip was bout 10K. I was flabergasted to say the least. Pay that much for a vacation to cook and clean!
I definitely understand about wanting to save on breakfast, etc. We do have a cooler with an AC adaptor and we do sometimes eat cereal and other snacks in the room-in paper products. I draw the line there. I am not washing a glass, making a sandwich-not happening! If I were staying a long time and wanted for me AND my DH to do laundry, we would just use the hotel's laundry room. Anyone esle not want to see a kithcen or do housework on vacation? I also want maid service every day.

My best friend said the same thing when she went to WL a few years ago. She said it was her vacation too, and she wasn't going to spend it cooking!

Maybe some people feel they would rather spend money on attractions and souveniers than food. Maybe some people have limited diets or pick kids and need access to a kitchen.

For me, I went on a cruise so I wouldn't even have the opportunity to have to cook or clean.

I refuse to cook while on vacation if it's going down to WDW or just up north to the beach. Restaurants all the way for me.....I cook enough the rest of the year!

Now laundry.....I do usually do a few loads if we're gone more than a few days.

I don't like to cook or clean at home, I certainly don't want to do it on vacation

As a DVC owner I can say that every trip to WDW will have a kitchen and W/D!! We would be lost without our kitchen and laundry facilities. We would not (and cannot handle) eat out 3 meals a day...especially Disney food. One maybe two meals out is fine with us. Breakfast in our room is a must. If we are out at lunch, then we grab something, but always end up back at the room for dinner. We are going on a 4 day trip to Mackinac Island and we are staying in a hotel with a fridge and microwave. I am sure we will get milk and snacks, but our meals will be eaten out. You cannot imagine the amount of money we have saved by eating our meals in our room!
As far as laundry...we only take a few days worth of clothes. No need to pack for the full duration of the trip. Plus, when y'all come home you have to do laundry! All we do is take our clothes from suitcase to the dresser. Ours are already cleaned. Y'all make it sound like we slave on vacation. What is the big deal about throwing in a load of laundry before leaving for the parks and tossing it in the dryer when you get back? I know there are quite a few other DVC members that feel the same way.

I will not cook on vacation. I will not smuggle in kitchen appliances, barbeque grills or use the resort iron to make grilled cheese sandwiches. I will not use the coffee pot to make food, nor will I use the microwave at the food court to rustle up some dinner. I will not make my family share meals to save money, I will not reuse water bottles, nor will I pinch a penny until it bleeds. If we cannot afford to go and eat out we just will not go.

My family gets cranky if they eat in restaurants for too long.
I do too. I simply buy burrito wraps, a can of refrieds and shredded cheese with salsa and chips-voila, a meal with a
snak to boot! Also, tiny boxes of cereal with a jug of milk
and juice-dishwasher no problem. We like to lay around in
our pjs and eat breakfast or not waste time in a restaurant.
We like to have pizza in the room one night and keep the
1/2 finished can of pop cold. DH buys one of the two six packs
a year that he buys on vacation and has one each night. I,
well I like to eat my M&M's frozen!!! BTW, last Christmas vacation, we paid $89 per night for a one bedroom, very nice
suite with kitchen and two TV's, bathroom and dressing room
including breakfast. We were 5 minutes drive in traffic from
Downtown Disney. No $10,000 vacations for me. The hotel
had a great laundry room with magazines, a pool with a jacuzzi
and a workout room.

We used to rent a suite with a kitchen while on vacation growing up. It was cheaper that way.

Even now, I don't mind going on vacation with a kitchen. Maybe I'm weird, but I don't really like eating out for every meal every day. And I actually like to cook! :p The maid service on the other hand....need it every day! ;)

   That was completely irrelavant to the OP's question, but thanks for your insight.

A kitchen is great for breakfast, doggy bags from a restaurant, water bottles to take with you to the parks and a thousand other reasons even if you don't plan on cooking a full meal.

As for the washer & dryer, it is wonderful not having to overpack because you can do laundry quite easily and can even wash all your clothes before returning home and be able to unpack clean clothes instead of having a ton of laundry to do when you get home from vacation.

But for $10K*, they really should consider buying into DVC and getting the 2 bedroom with washer & dryer and full kitchen for 50 years. *Of course $10k won't buy enough points for very long stay in a 2 bedroom unit but if someone is going to spend that on one trip, they really should consider buying some points.

And if you do just like the benefits of having a cooler with you and don't want to invest $10K, you may want to look into renting points for a DVC studio with a mini kitchen = small refrig, a microwave (w/a bag of microwave popcorn), a coffee maker (w/coffee) and a sink along with cups, paper plates and bowls. You can probably find points to rent for about $10 a piece and a studio can rent for as little as 8 points a night.

It completely depends.

We did a pied-a-terre in Paris once...a beautiful apartment with all the comforts of home. We lived like Parisians for a couple of weeks and that was lovely. We slept in late bc we ddn't have to stay out of the way of housekeeping...we could cook, or not. It was nice though to have that option....fresh bread and eggs in your own apartment...incomparable!

Then there was a beachside villa in one of the Bahamian out islands. Same deal...call housekeeping when we wanted it. Cooked if we wanted. It was GREAT not having to eat every meal out....but to just have fresh fruit on your own deck in the morning.

I CAN understand however, NOT wanting to cook on vacations though. It really depends on the situation, I think. (edited to add: If we're talking about Disney vacation...I'm afraid I don't think I would want to cook unless I were at one of the DVCs AWAY from the parks like Hilton Head or Vero.:o)

For me it's not about saving money, it's about conveniece and about not being bothered by washing a couple galsses or doing laundry.
I don't make full meals in our kitchen(DVC owner), but I like having drinks and snacks, and cereal and yogurt and tea and coffee, etc. right there.
Washing a few dishes is a total non issue for me, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.
It's like when people won;t rent a car because they say their idea of vacation isn't driving themselves around. I see their point, but for us, one has nothing to do with each other, same with using a kitchen.
AS for laundry, I actually like to do laundry-I don;t know why people don't, for real. LOL
You just throw it in, and then I watch TV wheile I fold, easy peasy!:teeth:
I would not pay $10,000 for one trip for a kitchen or a washer/dryer, however-that is crazy!! LOL

I paid $500 a week for a beautiful two bedroom villa that had a washer and dryer and a full kitchen. Can't imagine spending 10k for that.

That being said, I don't actually cook while on vacation, but I love having a refrigerator. And a toaster for the mornings. And my own washer and dryer is sooooo much better than having to pack a ton of clothes.

What I like doing is splitting up the stay -- a little time in a hotel, then the remainder of the time in a villa. The perfect combo for us. :)

Since DH is "addicted" to diet coke and DS has food allergies, a fridge and kitchenette is a bit of a necessity for us. That said, I will NOT cook more than microwave popcorn while on a WDW vacation!! Although I do have to make pb&j on wheatfree bread about once a day!:p I HATE to cook.... so cooking on a WDW vacation is out of the question! Although I do some cooking on our family lake vacation..... kind of an out of the way place and no restaurants handy!! But there are 6 adults and we really share the cooking and schedule it so that each couple only had to cook one dinner, so it works out okay.......................P

As a DVCr I would love to see them offer a two bedroom unit with NO kitchen... just microwave, fridge and laundry. LOL

I would never paid 10 K for a week in a two bedroom... but I did buy enough points to stay in a two bedroom unit.

I do not want a kitchen on vacation. But I want a washer and dryer especially if I am spending a full week or more on vacation.

We've been DVC members since 1991 and have never used the oven. I do not cook on vacation, but I do like having a fridge for bottled water and some fruit. We do breakfast in(very simple, coffee and bagel, we are not breakfast people) and lunch and dinner out. We always go for at least 2 weeks and can not imagine not having a washer and dryer. Even times when we stay non-DVC I always do a couple of loads of laundry if we are gone for more than a few days.

When I'm on vacation, I only want dinner reservations, room service, housekeeping making my beds and cleaning my room, bartenders pouring my tropical drinks... I work every other day, if I'm on vacation that means NOT working! If we are ever gone for more than a week or so, we drop off our laundry at a local laundromat and let them wash, dry, fold.

I do agree with others about having a refrigerator, though. It's always nice to come back to a cold soda or water. And, for those that have food allergies, I can absolutely understand why it's easier and safer for you in the long run. Food allergies are not fun!

We don't use the kitchen for naything other than snack storage and breakfast, which is usually something easy like breakfast sandwiches, bagels, or fresh fruit salad....for some reason fruit tastes SO much better in WDW!!!!!!!!!

Laundry is not a problem for me, as I throw it in when we head back to the hotel, then we go to the pool, then when we go back to the room to change for dinner it goes intot he dryer. I like not having to pack a ton of stuff, so throwing a couple of loads of wash in is the trade-off I guess.

NO way would I want any form of work while on vacation. One plus is that w/the w/d you can come home w/all the clothes washed & not have that huge pile when you get back. I would prefer the huge pile on return though.
