Anyone else job-hunting?

My ex got laid off the week of Xmas last year... and didn't find work until April of this year (he does computer programming).. My DBF got laid off in mid-August (construction) and just a couple weeks ago found some side jobs to do, that actually are paying pretty well.
Luckily, my job is pretty secure. We were talking at the other day at work about this... in retail (depending on the stability of the company) it might be scary to look elsewhere with so many companies going under and filing bankruptcy.

I am. I just graduated from law school, I didn't think it would be this hard to find a job. Most of the firms want someone with 2-3 years of experience and my 5 months as an intern just don't cut it.

Ugh, I must be doing something wrong :-(

My DBIL is a lawyer. I remember when he first graduated...I think he joined some sort of professional association for lawyers and then networked through there to find a job. He has worked for himself when he is not working for someone else's law firm. And he likes working for himself the best. He recently moved the whole family from Syracuse to Watertown to work at someone else's law firm. But, it didn't work out. So he is working for himself again and happier than ever. Is working for yourself an option?

Yeah, that is what I've found in a lot of teaching positions. They want atleast a year of experience and all I have is a few months of subbing. How am I ever supposed to get experience it nobody gives me a chance?

I feel that I'm doing something wrong too. :guilty:

Have you looked into city schools? I live near Rochester, NY and I know that the Rochester city schools are ALWAYS looking for teachers. It's not the most glamorous place to start, but it is definitely a place to work and get experience so that you can become qualified for your dream teaching job. And who knows, maybe it would end up being your dream teaching job.

The department that my DH is in will be gone the end of Jan. Luckily I think he is entitled to about 3 or 4 months pay at that point. Of course he is starting to look already. He even has an informal interview tonight. DH really likes his company and they are doing alot to help this group find a job within the company and they are also bring in recruiters and stuff to help. We went thru this about 3 years ago with the same company. Things worked out then (although we were really nervous). We are less nervous this time but the economy is also alot worse.

We never thought we'd be in a position like this. DH got let go at the end of December as a VP at a Real Estate related dot.com. He was able to get work as a contract programmer right away. The project he worked on for that company finished in June and he hasn't worked since. He applies to jobs every day, hasn't had an interview in months. He talks to recruiters, he's contacted everyone he knows, but he can't seem to land any face-to-face interviews. We're not panicking yet, but it's tough to see him like this. I work at a school less than half-time and really can't take on more, since my 91 year-old mother lives with us and I need to be able to take her to her many doctor appts.

With this economy, I have a feeling it's going to be tough to find anything.

Good luck to everyone looking.

My DH was off work from Oct to Jan this past year. He got laid off from a company that he had worked for in one capacity of another for 10 years. He was pissed and devestated as he was one fhe best producers in his workplace, he was just the last hire in his position. He never filed for unemployment, doesn't really believe in government aid and was hopeful to find something quicker then he did.He lucked into a job with good benefits but a momster commute of 1.5 to 2 hours one way in anoter couty. He stayed there til August when he was hired bac to his old company just at a different store. He is commision only so things are pretty scary for us right now. It is amazing how 3 months out of work can do so financial damage. We are still digging out from the hole and paying cobra insurance at 1200 a month :scared1: He might get a promotion come the first of the year at least that is the rumour but i am trying not to get my hopes up in case it doesn't go through.

We know alot of people out of work, some who just don't look and some that are under qualified for the positions they are applying for with the competition being so tough.
I really don't know how people are getting by. This economy really scares me.

Good luck to everyone looking and don't be afraid to try something new. There are jobs out there like in my husbands line of work (automotive) but people dont want to work the hours required so don't even look to that. Keep your options open and see what else is around.
