I lost my job about 6 weeks ago - it was very unexpected. So, now I am stuck trying to find a job in this economy. What really stinks is that I had a really good-paying job that I really enjoyed. And I had a great working relationship with my boss.

I know I'm not alone in this...anyone else?

I lost my job a couple of weeks ago. I was able to find another one and I start on Tuesday.

Hang in there, you will find something.

Congrats on finding a new job! Is your new job is the same industry as your old job? Or did you have to switch career paths?

DH is. He lost his job in Jan and has been looking ever since. He has a part time job, but he is still looking for a full time position.

Good luck to you. :wizard: :grouphug:

I'm sorry to hear of your layoff, 2 of my co-workers have lost their jobs in the last month, I work in a housing related field and it's scary I'm looking for a job because I'm not sure how long I have. My co-workers are having a hard time finding work too.

Hang in there, and good luck

I'm not, but DH is. He's been out of work since June, with nothing really on the horizon. Since he's a construction manager, in this economy we expect he'll be out of work for quite some time.

Fortunately (or not), my job is pretty secure. There seems to be a never-ending supply of kids that can't stay out of trouble and state law says they have to go to school.

Thank you for sharing your stories. Are any of you getting assitance from state unemployment benefits?

Also, what money-saving practices have you adopted to help make ends meet? I make lunch for DH everyday now for him to take to work. He used to buy food night at work - usually McDonalds or something else equally unhealthy. Now he eats sandwiches or soup, fruit, chips and I also try to put something yummy in like homemade cookies.

DH is collecting unemployment. At first he didn't think he would have a hard time finding something new, but ... owell....He is looking for something part-time to supplement his benefits...hopefully he'll get something for the holidays.

I used to buy lunch, but I take it now. I also had stopped really looking for bargains when I grocery shopped, but I'm back to that big time. We used to eat out 2 or 3 times a week, but we've cut that out too. I try to consolidate shopping trips so that I save gas. I never, ever had shopped in a dollar store until he was laid off....not that I get much there, but wrapping paper, bows, and balloons for our granddaughters b-day party were much, much cheaper than I would have paid a year ago.

DH has been looking for 5 months. Luckily he still has his job, he just hates it and wants out but it's been very tough with the market the way it is. I have a friend who has no job and has been looking for 14 months :sad2:

I am. We used to live in Upstate NY but my husband got a new job in Western Kentucky that started mid August. We're living with my Mom in Southern Illinois. I'm looking for a job in the town where he's working which is about 2 hours away but it's hard.

Yes and no. I have sold Real Estate for the last eight years and then due to the market I had to go into the automotive industry. The place I was working didn't work out, but I was able to find another job in the automotive industry within 2 weeks. It is not the job I was hoping for, but it is better than nothing.

I am looking for a full-time teaching job. I just finished student teaching this past January and had no luck finding anything for this school year. :sad1: So now I'm just doing the subbing thing and hoping a long-term job comes up. It's really frustrating. :guilty:

I was laid off this summer too, but it was no surprise at least - I was in subprime mortgages, so it was bound to happen :D I haven't found anything yet though I'm not shocked since I don't think there will be too many subprime openings any time soon, so I'm looking into other industries as well. I know the right job will show up at the right time so I'm trying not to stress about it too much, but it does cause me some anxiety. Good luck with everyone's job hunts!! :)

I was laid-off my teaching position because of the budget debacle happening in Florida right now. I'm collecting unemployment right now. Unfortunately the hiring season for teaching is May-October. Maybe I can find a leave position.

My heart goes out to those in distress.

DH is looking right now, but he's transitioning career paths. He's applied for several jobs with the federal government. I've even delved through the listings there and you'd be amazed at the variety and locations of jobs on their web site. Maybe some of you can find something that will help.

The site is:
www.usajobs.gov

The advanced search is easy and straight-forward and keep in mind that posted salaries usually don't include an adjustment for location. With the bailout on the horizon, there may be a whole bunch of new jobs created.

I am. I just graduated from law school, I didn't think it would be this hard to find a job. Most of the firms want someone with 2-3 years of experience and my 5 months as an intern just don't cut it.

Ugh, I must be doing something wrong :-(

I was. I lost my IT job back in June - I kind of saw it coming as my old company had been bought out last December, and the new management just could not seem to get a handle on how to market my department (IT Consulting). One day we were told that my company would be getting out of the business of servicing local clients and we were to be merged into a national practice. Too bad they weren't telling the truth. They dropped the customers and, as current projects ended, the plan was to let the consultants go. My project finished first. I got a decent severance and my vacation pay. My manager and I were let go the same day. The rest of the consultants saw that and most have since left on their own - out of 12 of us, two are still there tied up in a really crappy project for the State of Pennsylvania, and both are looking REALLY hard for other employment.

We had already planned and paid for a vacation to WDW so we went on a two week vacation a week after I lost my position. Then I spent some time doing some 1099 consulting work for a local firm that picked up the customers my old firm had dropped. Meanwhile I started interviewing and was lucky enough to get a new position with the local water company. I am actually with the parent company of the local water utility, and my new company is in 32 states and Canada. Decent pay (slightly south of what I was earning at my old firm), GREAT benefits, and really good bonus program. I went from a 12 mile round trip commute to a 40 mile round trip. My new office is next to Hershey Park.

Now I am working to get my friend (who is still at the old firm) a position at my new company.

Yeah, that is what I've found in a lot of teaching positions. They want atleast a year of experience and all I have is a few months of subbing. How am I ever supposed to get experience it nobody gives me a chance?

I feel that I'm doing something wrong too. :guilty:
