I told myself I would reserve judgment until I had the opportunity to ride the attraction. We just returned from a wonderful trip and I have to say the new Soarin is nice, but is not as good as the original. Am I alone in this opinion? the 3D effects are a bit too 3D, there is less motion in this one, there are movements on the screen that don't match what a hand glider can do.

It is still a great experience, but since I knew the original and how good it was, I cant help but be disappointed. Anyone have any tips to lessen the disappointment on this one?

I found the CGI distracting, the transitions a little jarring and the distortion disappointing. The old version tried to do less, and I think in this case, less is more. If it were just the transitions, I wouldn't dislike this version as much, because I know it's harder to transition between a waterfall and Paris at night than Yosmite and a golf course, but combined with the CGI animals it's just fake on top of fake. I guess the distortion was there before too, but again, it was a tree lining a river or a hot air balloon in the distance instead of a world landmark curving in on itself. I wish that they had thought of the curved screen when shooting. Or maybe they should have stuck to nature scenes where it would be less obvious.

If they are able to digitally remaster films that were never meant for big TV's and such couldn't they just remaster the original?

Part of the supposed "magic" of the new Soarin is that is it was shot in 4K resolution and the projectors were upgraded to 4K projectors. Unfortunately they focused too much on what they could do with technology and CG rather than telling a story which is the inspiration.

I loved the classic!

I hated the distortion of the new movie, which was emphasized by the buildings bending at the tops. It is easier to hide in nature. The CGI wasn't a dealbreaker for me, but I felt that they used it too much. The scents, they were lame.

I would welcome the old film back for sure!

I think that after 15 years updating the movie wasn't a bad idea, I just don't think that this was the best way they could have done it.

I really like the new one, and I always thought it should be Soarin Over the World in Epcot anyway. The only gripe I had about it was the distortion. The first time I did it I sat all the way on the side and everything was badly distorted. Now I just wait extra for the middle if I have to.

My whole family loved it, but I did make a comment about the Eiffel Tower not being curved in person.

Yeah, the Eiffel Tower was a really bad choice for that very reason.

We did it 4 times when we were there last month. It's remarkable how different it is from different positions in the theater.

I actually enjoyed it a lot.

But I have found that I'm usually out of step with what the majority thinks.

Totally agree with both of you! We (me, DH and DS) all loved the new Soarin' but all agreed that the distortion was hard to deal with. We are willing to wait for the middle.

We will be there on Wednesday and will get to see the new film as the last time we were there Soarin' was closed getting ready for the 60th. Will have to hold judgment on the new film but it sounds like its not as good as the original. :(
