Anyone drive a 2001 Jetta?

Michelin LTX MS 235/85-16 for my 3/4 ton Suburban. Just checked Tire Rack, they want $203 each for them. Throw in $1.75 California tire recycling fee, $20 per tire mounting and balancing and $20 state sales tax, you are right at $245 a tire.

I have never any tire issued on my personal cars, but we run E-350 vans at work loaded to capacity and we finally convinced corporate only to buy the Michelins because they are the only tire we wear out. Coopers the tread comes off usually about 20,000 miles. Goodyear, Firestone/Bridgestone and Yokohama all suffer blowouts long before the tread is worn out (due to the weight of our trucks we are told). Now, we just got 2 new E-350 vans that came from Ford with Kumho tires, but neither of those trucks has 10,000 miles on them yet, we'll see how those tires holdup.

Funny how one can love a product and another can hate it. We had Michelins tires on our RV. (maybe it is different than a van tire) We have had three blow out. First one we only had 3000 miles on the RV. We will never buy Michelin again ever. I called Michelin so we could make a report and also offer the tire so they can inspect it. Their customer service was rude. After some research online, we found others with the same issues we have had. I find it hard to believe three tires of the same brand blow and there is not an issue with the tire.

I have been told that Michelin is the only maker that offers steel reinforcements in the sidewalls, that is why they have fewer blowouts. My Michelin dealer has all the RV magazine articles framed and posted talking about Michelin being the only tire an RV owner should consdier. They also push that tires should be replaced every 6 years due to weathering, no matter what the mileage. In my case, that would be about 18,000 miles in 6 years since I don't drive my truck a lot, but when I do, it is for 300 miles at a shot.
It is also my understanding that NBC and Telemundo's corporate policy prohibits anything but Michelin on live trucks they own at the stations they own (What is known as O & O's, owned and operated stations, not affilates).

Michelins are good tires. Surprised you guys had issues with Coopers. They're generally the longest lasting truck tires in the business (though louder than most).

I didn't read through all the replies but did you call transmission shops. My husband saved about half what the mechanic would charge to take his transmission into be refurbed and then took it in to our mechanic to have them put it back in.

They are the cheapest by a wide margin. $130 a tire for the same size.
They are what all the used car dealers slap on cars on their lots that need tires.

I'm seeing a LOT of Capitol brand tires on fleet vehicles now. Don't know a thing about them.
Wow, they are only $118 a tire.

You are joking right. Wife bought a brand new gli in 07, it was in the shop more than it was out the first three years.

I think the older VW's were known to be great but with all the computer stuff nowadays I have not met anyone with one that didn't have lots of problems. The way they put in the windows my BIL had the windows get stuck down in his VW like every other week.

Okay, now I gotta ask which ones. $130 is really cheap for a Cooper truck tire. Are those E-range tires? I wanna say my 265/75's were $850 with tax. Coopers are generally mid-range on price. Less than BFG or Michelin, but more than General & such.

Discoverer and they are load range E.

At the tire dealer I deal with, and the one we deal with at work Coopers are the least expensive tire they sell. Warriors (Michelins made in China )used to be the cheapest, but then Michelin stopped making them.

Interesting. Nowhere near that cheap here :(

Update:

We finally bought a new used car for DS - picked it up yesterday! It took longer than we had hoped because used 2003-2007 Honda Accords with under 150,000 miles sell like hotcakes in our neck of the woods. We lost 4 different cars to other buyers as we were driving to look at them! Yesterday we picked up his 2006 Honda Accord EX-L V6. It is gorgeous, looks almost brand new with leather seats and great paint. It was very well taken care of. The maintenance records came with the car - new tires, new front brakes and a new timing belt. It has 103,000 miles and we got it for $10,000. It was more than we wanted to spend initially, but it was a great price for that car in our area. Lower priced Accords ($8500 ish) had over 150,000 miles on them and we didn't want mileage that high. And best of all - DS LOVES it!

Glad you found a nice example of a high quality car. At 103k.............it's barely broken in! I hope it gives you many miles of reliable service. Thanks for the update.

It should serve you well. I guess like houses, it's all location. High blue book here is $9,400 for that car.

I think it's a good choice. I had 2001 Beetle, and while it had no major issues in the last 4 years before I sold it, it has had some sensors broken before, and those were a bit expensive. I would not want to own VW that is over 150K miles. Japanese cars are better built for such mileage.
