Anyone confined to WC stay at Disneyland hotel?

One should fight for one's rights and those of others if the rights are being trod upon. The problem with solving problems at any business is the complexity of issues.

Is your proposal needed?
Are there existing things that can rectify the problem being solved by the proposal?
Is this the best proposal or are there better ones out there?
How many people will benefit from your proposal?
Would there be better solutions that would serve more people?
How much will it cost to implement the proposal?
Will jobs be lost because of the proposal?
Will lives be interupted by the proposal?
Is the proposal feasible?
Can the money be used on other things that may make the business better for the guests? Like new curb cut off when there are enough or paint the doors of the bathroom and fix the stall doors.

Dealing with disabled rights and needs is not black and white but more like a paint factory that has blown up and now is many colours. A person using a hoyer lift will want a high bed. A mom with a bad back may want a high bed with rails for her child so she does not have to stoop over. Another will want a low bed and I do not care as I just want a soft bed and have crawled into bed

AT the DL Tomorrowland station I met a higher up CM and explained how he could make the line fairer and prevent hassles over perceived line cutting. I told him to put up in front of the chains some benches which would allow guests to park. The benches would make it obvious that that is not a place to cross and was a line boundary. If needed the benches could be moved to the side and the chain removed. Free and easy and no work for CMs and better crowd control. I did not scream and rant because some people cut in line but instead calmly explained things. There was a need and benefit.

Cheshire when you closing this down?pixiedust: :offtopic: :moped:

Man! This stinks! I haven't really read all the drama responses but I am sad that this thread now has to get deleted :(

Being new to the disabilities section this thread and a spinoff from it, was honestly a saving grace! It's sad that people can't look past the little things and just stick with the actual help that this thread provided. It definitely eased our travel plans and I am so grateful that the op posted their experiences and for people responses (again I just read the helpful ones, don't get wrapped up in any drama).

Well we're off to enjoy our disney vacation now - armed with WAY more info than we were a few days ago!

I did not say it would be deleted; it is really extremely rare to delete a thread. Sometimes a post may get deleted iif it clearly violates board rules. We will only lock a thread if we have made several warnings and people keep ignoring the warnings.

I agree with Echie that there is a lot of useful information here.

It is just if there is arguing and insinuations that it may get locked, but don't worry about it vanishing.

you say you are looking to see what happens. Now on top of my asking a simple question for feedback from anyone who has stayed in the type room in question at the specific hotel, I am now being called a lier.
I was at the Magic Kingdom this last Sat. and Sun. every single ride that I approached on my scooter, did NOT have a greeter or CM at it. THat is the plain truth, maybe they were all on break the moment I got there, but I doubt that. I am sorry if this does not meet with anyone's approval. but that was the facts.
As for whom I asked and what I was told regarding WC seating areas in California Adventure for the Electrical parade on Dec. 27, 2008 that is an exact account of my experience.
I am a huge Disney fan and while I am a blunt and truthful person and not a susie sun shine person, I have been on these forums for many years now. though I do not post all the time.
I honestly wish that either someone who had stayed in the rooms and had any problem or no one at all, had responded. But that was not, as it never is, the case.
I think the attitude expressed by some here is very unfortunate. I stated in further posts that certainly anyone having a problem that bothers them contact someone right away to deal with it. That is always a good idea. It has nothing however to do with my question and my post and/or what I did in my case.
Unfortunately unless someone else was at the park Sat and Sun and were actaully looking for or paying attention to the presence or absence of Greeting CM's at rides then I doubt anyone is likely to come forward and coroborate my observations. They are true none the less. I was not pointing this out to score a black mark on Disney, but to let people know that there is not always someone there to give information at the entrance to every ride.
Like I said it is off season and there are obvious cut backs going on and I assume that was one of them, I don't know that but it makes sense and all I can say is that those people were not there.
Anyway, I could not let comments such as I have seen here written about me pass unchallenged.
I hope I have been civil in doing so.

I have noticed that the people on this board try to educate people on how to properly get things done. They try to help people know what to do when something happens and what their legal rights and guest rights are.

Many of your statements are puzzling to me and I have an army of park guest, CMs and former CMs that I can turn to as well as the internet and my memory. I had to wonder about your statements about plaids at that just don't make sense. I know enough about Disney to know that they would never leave rides unattended and without a greeter especially ones with limitations, special disabled stuff, or like Bug's Life have stuff that might scare a guest or make them sick (stinkbug scent). That puzzled me.
This may have puzzled you but it is exactly what happened the rides that I went to and they were not that many, did not have greeters. For whatever reason they did not have them. I know they usually do, Sat. and Sun of last week they did not.
Disabled viewing allows disabled guests to have a viewing spot if they want one instead of parking on the route. There are many better spots for the disabled guests to see fireworks and parades. Said spots are first come, first served just like the parade route.
I came specifically on December 27 in order to see the Electrical Parade. I arrived at 3:30 and basically asked the questions I mentioned at the places I said I did and received the answers I said I received.
I then picked a spot near but not too near the reserved for VIPs parade area just before the Parade leaves the park.
So I did not arrive late and the spots were filled or anything of the sort. I was told there were no designated WC viewing areas in California Adventure park because you could see from anywhere along the parade route.
Here is a section from the Disneyland Disablities handbook:
Parade Viewing
Most entertainment and recreation areas offer viewing for Guests using wheelchairs and Electric Convenience Vehicles (ECVs).

wheelchairs and Electric Convenience Vehicles (ECVs).
So as you can see from that last part the information I was given that there is no WC area in that park would seem to be correct, and it suprised me which is what I said in my post.
As a small business owner once, I am confused as to why your room was not adequate. It was not adequate for the reasons I mentioned in my original post. But I could get around the problems and chose to do so for the one night I was there.Disney cannot help you if you did not first tell them there was a problem. As I have stated I was not looking for an instant fix to only my problem. As stated the hotel is pre ADA and has been remodelled. Did someone give you a nondisabled room No, I received a Disabled room, but that room did not meet basic requirements. the toilet could have been fixed with a riser for the seat I agree. and If I had absolutely needed that I would have called and gotten it. and if so why? Was it in the reservations office, computer bugs, or someone in the hotel? If it was designated in the system as a disabled room then why was it not up to ADA standards? Now HERE we hit the nail on the head and it is my point and why I took it up with Not only guest services but also with those in higher authority and what My orignal post was about. Was if housekeeping or maybe the room was changed to accomodate a guest with special needs. I don't know if housekeeping for some reason put in a bed way to high for anyone but a basketball star or if it was maintenance or who, but if they did it to accomodate Someone? whoever, it should have been changed back to make it accessible, but clearly that was not the case. It helps a business to know what happened if you contact them immediately.
I contacted them the next morning, which I think is time for them to get to work on sorting it out. As I say I was assigned the correct room, no one made a mistake the room just needed things fixed/changed in it.
I am sorry for pointing out things that could have helped you with your trip. I find it upsetting that when I asked if you had a good time on the trip you had no answer. I am sorry that I did not specifically answer that question to you, I did in fact indicate in my posts that I had a decent time and the trip. I never said anything like I had a horrible trip, or it was ruined for me or anything of the sort. I do note that not one person has come forward to say that they had problems with that hotel. If there was people who were upset with that hotel then they had free and ample time to protest and complain here.
I am not looking for anyone to protest or complain, simply asked if anyone had a problem and if they mentioned it to anyone at the hotel. Obviously not every disabled person that has stayed at the Disneyland Hotel will see this thread.
I know for myself I tend to post before and perhaps right after a trip then not again until I am going again, so others may have been in those rooms but not see this thread, and if not that is fine.
You still clearly just do not understand me or what my post was about or for and simply felt the need to tell me what I should have done, and be upset with me because you think I am in some way attacking Disney.
that just is not the case.
I now will go to the time out corner and wait for the thread to close. :laundy:

I hope that by explaining my answers I have not made you even madder at me.

I am not mad at you and that is a silly concept. Frustrated yes but mad, no. I have SID/SPD so yeah I get frustrated easily but angry, nope. I have Calvin who seems to frustrate me the most so you are not even as bad as Calvin, not even half way.:grouphug:

:offtopic: Calvin where is my brand new, beloved, special super duper frying pan and mom's toothbrush and my popcorn bowls and my potato peelers? "I dunno, can I have money for my trip" Of all guys to sort of adopt as my little brother, lol.:lmao: Now that is frustrating and almost made me mad but it is Calvin, lol.

I was there friday and tuesday in my wheelchair and i saw a greeter at at least half the rides i went to... perhaps things were different over the weekend?

Ok we are at disneyland right now!!! Yay!
We are staying at the Grand Californian Hotel and YAHOO the beds are LOW in the wheelchair room! The whole room is great! So we had no problems! Check in went super smoothly and everything too! It's super! We are so thrilled!

Glad to hear it becuase I will be at that hotel on Feb 7. You have some great weather for Disney as well. have a great time.pirate:

I don't know but as I said, on Sat. and Sun. when I went, I only went on a few rides maybe 3 or 4 though I did notice that there was not a greeter at a couple more of the fantasy land rides, becuase I was going to ask them something, nothing urgent, but did not see anyone for those rides either.
I am not saying that no rides had greeters or anything like that. Just that some, the one's I happen to ride and notice, did not, at least not when I was at them.
Only mentioned that in conjuction with people seeking info from them on where to access a ride, though that info is usually also on a sign near the line, and of course in the Disability guidebook which it is good to pick up at Town hall or print out before you go.

Fantasyland rides for the most part do not have greeters except where a fast pass is needed. There is a ride operator whom can be asked questions, no limitations on guests such as weight or size, and disabled guests use the exit and are met by a CM. Wow you made it sound like DCA was with out greeters. Please be more specific next time. All rides and most rides sounds like Bobsleds and Soarin did not have greeters. It was just a few Fantasyland rides then that is the norm. Snow White has the operator right near the exterior so that guest can talk to it. I need a nap as I am not mad, just need a long nap. :beach: :coffee: pixiedust:

Nope - we've always been at Disneyland in this thread. The OP keeps calling DisneyLand "Magic Kingdom" to differentiate it from "California Adventure" (at least I think that's why).

While being fully aware that you only had one day (at the time) to visit/enjoy Disneyland Resort, had I been in the same position I would have waited for a CM/Greeter to arrive at the entrance to an attraction, or even gone in search of one.

Thanks :) We're having a wonderful time here :) And are loving the weather!!

I believe you misunderstood this person's post I believe they were stating that they were AT disneyland at the time of making the post not that we were not talking about Disneyland and were talking about WDW or anything else previously.

I had no need to wait for nor seek out a greeter at the rides. In the post in which I initially mentioned there being no greeter at some rides, I was just pointing out to people who might be going to visit that there is not ALWAYS, everytime a greeter so they may have to seek one or use the disablity guidebook or whatever. This post was in response to someone posting that if you were in a WC there would be a greeter at each ride to tell you where to go.
This was not even originally in this thread at all but in another thread that I responded to, and that response was then dragged into this thread to show I was trying to put down Disney by saying they did not have greeters.
It was just this sort of thing that has made me, not happy with the posters in this thread.
As I keep saying I am capable of getting the assistance or help I require. If I had needed a greeter or CM I would have found one.
On this trip I was there for One day but I live in Encino and I have an annual pass so it is not like I won't be going again.
What some of you don't understand is that I was not looking for any advice or help on what to do from anyone in this thread at all.

As to the Hotel issues, I did speak to someone in the morning and I did write outlining my exact concerns and issues. I did not require them to fix things immediately when I was there. I have said all these things repeatedly and I don't know how I can make them any clearer.

The ONLY reason I started this thread was to hear from anyone who might have stayed in an accessible room in the Disneyland hotel and had a problem with the room not fully complying with ADA mandates. that is all. If no one has or if no such person saw the thread Okay, so be it. But I did not ask for advice on how I should have handled it or anything else.

I hope now that people will stop giving me advice on how I should have done anything and just leave it alone. Thank you.

I did see anyone having pointed out what the current ADA Guidelines for hotel/resort rooms are. The current guidelines came into effect in 2002, so anything built/remodeled before that would meet the previous guidelines, which I believe were from the early 1990s.
To sort of summarize, in the current guidelines:
 • there are no guidelines for bed height, so you may see any bed height, even in a room with a roll in shower, without the room being out of compliance with the ADA Guidelines
 • There are actually no guidelines for any movable furniture in the current guidelines (beds, tables, chairs).
 • the guidelines say sinks can be mounted no higher than 34 inches, but there is no minimum height for sinks to be mounted, so they could be lower than that.
 • the toilet height guidelines are 17-19 inches. Before the guidelines that are currently in effect, I believe the height was 19-21 inches. The 21 inch one was high enough that my feet didn't touch the ground (and I am 5 foot 7 with a 33-34 inch inseam length, so I have long legs). I believe they went with 17-19 inches because a toliet can't be lowered, but a riser could be put in if someone needs it higher.

This is a link to a fairly recent thread where bed heights were discussed. It might be helpful.

Link to the ADA Accessibility Guidelines currently in effect.

Link to pdf file of summary of proposed changes to the ADA construction guidelines. This has not been finalized yet, so things could still change. Some of the things the draft guidelines proposed:
 • a guideline of 17-19 inches for the bed height (there have not previously ever been any heights for beds)
 • 17-19 inch height for toilets (this is the same as the present guideline for toilets).
 • minimum and maximum ranges for measurements (the current guidelines often give either a minimum or a maximum, but not both)
These draft guidelines are no longer open for comment, so I was not able to find a copy of them on the internet (that is the 'normal' thing to happen once the comment period has ended). It's anyone's guess when the new guidelines will actually be adopted and put into effect.
If there is a lot of disagreement in the group that is finalizing the guideline, it could come back up for comment. If that happens, I'd suggest people make any comments they have known.

Hee hee, yeah that's what I meant... I WAS actually at disneyland at the time of making my post! I had just wanted to post about my experience with the bed height while I still remembered :)

Oh course, now anyone reading this thread is gonna take a tape measure....

hehehehehe

(DW always has one in her sewing kit she takes!)
