I am in the middle of booking our 2 week holiday in California in August. We are spending 1 week between San Francisco and Magic Mountain area and the other week in Orange County. I have gotten some amazing deals using Hotwire. Since we have two teenagers, we need two rooms. I have been able to book hotels, basically getting two rooms for the price of one with hotwire. I have learned so much and actually have gotten exactly the hotels that I wanted but at half the price.

The best hotels for families in my opinion not only in CA but across America are the Residence Inn by Marriott, Summerfield Suites by Wyndham, and Embassy Suites. All are at the higher end of the hotel pecking order...good rates (under $200/night)can be secured with the Entertainment Card or AAA.

The above three offer complimentary breakfast, all-suite format (2-bedroom/2-bath easy to find at Residence Inn & Summerfield Suites) and family-friendly terms (snacks/sodas all day, pool, game room etc...).

They're everywhere in the US...no need to book 2 hotel rooms for a family anymore. I hope more of these hotels open in Canada...it's tough when you want to travel with kids in Canada...need more nice all-suite hotels in Canada though I've noticed Residence Inn starting to pop up more and more!

Hope this helps

Since we live on the west coast, we go to California every year to visit Disney in Anaheim and then San Diego.

We use www.Priceline.com for booking our hotel. Our friends who came down with us in March got the Hyatt for $30 USD/night. They upgraded to a kidsuite for an extra $45/night. We've stayed at the Hyatt and it is wonderful. Another favourite is the Anaheim Marriott, which is next to the Convention Centre. The Marriott Suites next door to the Hyatt is brand new and looks very nice. Lots of people also like the Candy Cane Inn.

One hotel to avoid is the Anaheim Hilton, where my DH and I spent our last holiday. It was gorgeous in the lobby (fooled us) but the rooms are worn and weary -- comparable to a Motel 6. It's also very business oriented.

In San Diego, hotels are VERY expensive. That's why we use Priceline again. We stayed at the Hyatt La Jolla during our last visit in March, and it was GORGEOUS. For $58 USD/night, it was a bargain for a 4 star hotel.

If you plan on using Priceline, check out www.biddingfortravel.com first to find out what bids other people are getting hotel rooms for. Also, Priceline only accepts American credit cards, so being Canadian, I can only use my American Express card.

I used my Mastercard for a room at the Hyatt in Miami for $40. It was awesome and I had no prob with a Canadian credit card. The only thing I had a glitch with was the zipcode and I entered 11111.

Good luck! You'll have a great time!

We were in California this past December. WE stayed a few days in LA then drove down to Anaheim. Disneyland is so much smaller then WDW, but we had a GREAT time. It was nice to see the difference. One thing we didn't really like was Universal Studios. It was SO much smaller then the one in Florida, and we were done in a half a day. I was rather dissapointed with it. Right near Disneyland there are a bunch of hotels, and shops, restaurants. We stopped at a vistors info place and got some great info. Have a great time!
