We are from Toronto and thinking of flying out of Buffalo. Currently, Air Tran price in August is about $450 per person, non-stop flight. Is this a good deal? The prices in Toronto are almost double!!!

I'm from Ontario as well and have flown out of buffalo before and will again in April. In June I paid $1200 for 4 of us and in April our tickets were $1300 for 5. Over $400 a person is not that good of a deal IMO also because AirTran charges for bags. For me anything under $250 is a great deal and $300 is good. We are flying JetBlue. Have you tried them? Or southwest? Neither of those charge for bags.

I should add that I haven't flown out of there in August so that could make a difference. Also flying midweek can be cheaper

That seems high. We flew Christmas week.....absolute peak dates.....from Buffalo (to Orlando on December 23rd and home to Buffalo on December 30th) for an overall cost of $1125 for three of us ($375 pp). We thought that was pricey compared to other times of year.

Both flights were non-stop. One way via Airtran, the second via Jetblue. And that included our baggage (one free bag per person on Jetblue, and checking one bag PP on Airtran) as well as Airtran seat selection fees.

Our flights last August from Syracuse, NY were $868 for three of us ($290 pp). Flights this year were cheaper on our dates from Syracuse than Buffalo, and we paid $330 pp round trip (again, all flights non-stop). Each of these are Jetblue flights so there were no additional charges for baggage, seat selection, etc. to factor in.

Last week SW had a mid week $90 each direction from ROC to MCW and it's rare that ROC is cheaper than BUF. Most of the BUF one way flights are AirTran (on SW site) now and I'm not allowing them to assign my seats for me free luggage or not.

We are flying out of Buffalo this August with AirTran. We have direct flights going down on a Sunday and returning on a Saturday (a 13 day trip). We are paying $199 per person rt. Which I am very excited about!

I think the key for getting cheap flights is to book as soon as possible. We booked our tickets the day after the flights were released for the end of August (back in early February). Since then the prices have just crept up.

Last year we paid $310 rt with AirTran, but we didn't book until about a month after flights were released. The prices were much lower when the dates were first released but I didn't book it because I just figured that the prices would eventually go down (but they never did).

I have noticed this about flights from the us. While here in Canada you seem to pay more if you book really far out, the flights from us airports tend to go up. Except of course for seat sales. It's crazy how much they go up and down. We paid $1300 for our flights. I have seen them go as high as $2600 and now it's back down to around $1500 (for 5 people).

We find that as well. We booked for August in mid-January for this year's flights. The same flights now have increased to $460 return......up $130 per person. And there's still 5 months until we travel.

We always fly from Buffalo and we always budget for $300 per person, hope for $200 and usually end up somewhere around $250. The further you book out the better and you can keep looking after booking (with Southwest) and rebook if it drops in price so you end up with a credit. We just booked for October last week and got $999 for 5 people for direct flights on AirTran - we booked through the Southwest site and apparently it includes free bags just like a regular southwest flight as long as you book on southwest.com.

Have you tried pricing out flights from Rochester instead of Buffalo? It'll add an extra hour of travel time to get to the airport but it might save you money. I'm from Rochester, but we flew non-stops on Southwest out of Buffalo last year in May, I think around $250 a person. We're getting non-stops in May out of Rochester this year on Southwest for $240 per person.
