Anybody else not eat veal for moral reasons?

Yes, I stopped eating veal when I was a teen. I also gave up corned beef for similar reasons (that one was a lot easier since I don't like corned beef).

Just curious... why is corned beef a morally bannable food? Brisket is a cut of full grown beef, and 'corned' is salted and preserved. :confused3

I have always been told they just feed the cows just corn to make corned beef. If that's not true, that is good news. I don't like it anyway.

Nope, no veal, even before I went veg. Now, no meat at all!

I've got to say I just can't imagine how veal could be "humanely raised". I totally applaud you for considering that and trying to find a better alternative, but I guess it would really depend on your definition of "humane"...

No veal here. We have to drive through a veal farm on the way to church and it makes me so sad. :guilty:

I did a search and now I'm  It seems I was lied to about corned beef. Glad to hear it.

From the USDA site:

Corning is a form of curing; it has nothing to do with corn. The name comes from Anglo-Saxon times before refrigeration. In those days, the meat was dry-cured in coarse "corns" of salt. Pellets of salt, some the size of kernels of corn, were rubbed into the beef to keep it from spoiling and to preserve it.

Formula fed, crate raised calves produce 'white veal' which is said to be of superior quality, but raised in very inhumane conditions.

There is also 'pink veal' which is more likely to be humanely raised. They are allowed to nurse from their mothers for a time and eventually fed a balanced grain diet. They are 'free roaming', not crated.

Any living creature bred to be consumed would be inhumanely raised in many vegetarian's eyes. I understand that point of view. I just wanted to stress that not all veal is raised poorly, just as not all tuna fish kills dolphins.

Let's see.. I had some delicious veal and peppers in Wildwood, New Jersey back in 1970.. I could never prepare it as well as that Italian restaurant did, so no - I don't eat it..

Well I had about zero choice at the supermarket last night. The shelves were nearly bare. There was however, several nice brand new packages of veal sitting out on the meat shelf. I picked them up and did not have the heart to go through with it. I agree with you OP. I can't do it.

Never had veal, just knowing it was a little baby cow turns me off! I didn't eat any meat for a very long time after seeing the slaughter houses on tv.

Never ate veal, never will. DH had it once but we both will not eat it for the same reasons.

I won't eat it for moral reasons, and neither will my dh--and this is a man who *seriously* loves his meat!

I love the taste of veal. I know that some animals are not raised humanely, but the same thing can be said for chickens. Most people just feel more sorry for the big-eyed mammal than the squawky bird. I try to eat naturally raised chickens (and eggs, for that matter) but I don't usually seek out natural veal. I just don't eat it that often while I eat chicken a couple times a week.

I stopped eating veal as a kid because I learned oof the conditions of the cow. Have not had it since.

The wise guy of the bunch. :teeth: :rotfl:

ok yes in some instances the calf is treated inhumanely,, but are you not eating pork because they are raised in pens fed as often as htey will eat and a diet that is not what a pig would naturally eat?

chickens have already been mentioned,,, 100000 birds in a building 20 by 75? have you ever smelled a chicken farm?

how about fish raised in a cage?

or for that matter any corn fed beef? have you ever seen a feed lot? i think in moral terms, any meat or animal product you cunsume could have "moral " issues. why singlke out an animal that was meant to be slaughtered that lived its entire life in a clean, climate controlled environment and was fed a very well balanced diet for its species?

Well, no I don't eat meat, and for exactly the reasons you described.

But even if animal production is inhumane across the board, it doesn't help anything for folks to start eating veal. Any improvment is better than nothing...
