Anybody else not eat veal for moral reasons?

Why is beef ok (for some) and not veal? I don't get it.

Nope. There's a bag in the freezer for DH (stepdad gave it to him) but I can't bring myself to eat veal since living in an area where cows were raised for this purpose.

Well, no I don't eat meat, and for exactly the reasons you described.

But even if animal production is inhumane across the board, it doesn't help anything for folks to start eating veal. Any improvment is better than nothing...

that was my point, why single out veal? the calfs butchered for veal are actually better treated than standard beef herds anyway.

I dive for lobster and have to kill them by my own hand to eat them. veal is delicious, and is served to me neatly in a restaurant. I couldn't kill the calf myself. that would be wrong. I guess I'm in the grey zone. I couldn't kill a mammal, but eating some of them sure is fun.

I don't eat veal very often because like C.Ann I don't know how to prepare it properly. For moral issues though. No. How am I to know how anything I'm eating was raised. I would hope I am eating the raised humanely meat all the time but there is no way for me to know for sure. If we are talking moral issues then to be sure we'd all have to cut out all meat. Just my .02.

Eggs? Commercially bought eggs aren't fertilized. They would never grow up to be chickens or roosters.

That was my thought, too. I eat chicken eggs, but I don't eat caviar. Different issues with that.

I worked at a veal farm for a few weeks when I was in high school. I have not nor will I ever eat veal again.

I don't eat beef, but that is mostly for health benefits not moral reasons. In fact, I would not eat any meat at all if it wasn't for DH. I just do not enjoy it like most people.

Ummmm, are there any animals really raised in humane circumstances that are meant for human consumption? I mean, they are being raised for a purpose...be it calfs, cows, pigs, fish, chickens, lamb....does a bolt being driven into a grown cows brain make it more appetizing than killing it as a calf? And I agree with Froggy...have you ever seen or been into a Chicken farm? We lived in Gainsville GA...the chicken capital of the world. Yuck!!!!
But DH and I both love a good cut of veal cooked right, love us some fried chicken, DH salivates over a nice grilled steak and nothing is better to me than Salmon. There is no "nice" way to prepare an animal for slaughter. They don't get a decorated nursery, trips to WDW then one day in their sleep, BAM!!! you're dead. Its an ugly business but I don't feel there are greater moral issues with calfs than any other "age" of meat we eat.
I guess we're the immoral majority becasue we don't discriminate against any meat.

I actually have some cattle and most of the time eat the beef I raise. When a calf grows up to about 900 pounds I send it to be processed. This after feeding it corn for several months. I know the idea of raising something then turning around and having it butchered to eat is an idea that a lot of people can't quite get their minds around but having been raised that way it just doesn't bother me that much. So the idea of eating veal doesn't bother me either. I don't eat it very often and when I do I usually eat it in a resturant. I like veal chops, and rosemary marinated grilled veal. An Italian resturant I go to a lot serves great veal.
