Any Williamsburg, Virginia advice?

Two years ago we were there on Good Friday. The weather was beautiful and the park was almost empty! The attendants told us the weekend would be a different story and we had picked a good day. What we were riding with no waits would have 60-90 minute waits, food lines would be longer, etc.
I'd go either before Easter weekend or the weekend after. :)

We stayed at Country Inn and Suites. It was new and reasonably priced. They had an indoor pool and jacuzzi. A pretty decent continental breakfast as well. It was about 10 minutes from Busch Gardens.

Have a great time!

I'm sooo glad I searched for a Williamsburg/BG thread and found this one! We are going Easter Weekend to VA beach for soccer tournaments and decided to go down Thursday night and do BG on Good Friday (Heethans that we are  ) . Glad to hear it's a good day to go. We've never been so I'm relieved that crowds wont be an issue and we can enjoy the park to it's fullest!!

For all of you that have been, where did you stay? Our preference is to stay in a suite. Any thoughts?
TIA

2) any hotel recommendations - good or bad.

Well, after our experiences there, I would tell anyone to steer clear of the Fort McGruder Radisson.

And I would also tell you that if the main attraction of Williamsburg for your vacation is going to be Busch Gardens, you might like the Kings Mill section. It's relatively new and closer to BG than the hotels in the Colonial area. Nothing is that far apart so the distance wasn't a huge issue, but we did find the roads to be exceptionally dark at night. There are a number of chains that operate hotels in this area (Kings Mill).

When I went, I stayed in Newport News. It was actually a nice and enjoyable drive to get to Williamsburg. Popped in the CD and I was set. :teeth: Such a nice drive in the woods also. :teeth: I know there's a Hampton Suites in Newport News. Don't know about the others in the area. I figured that staying in Williamsburg could probably get rather pricey and prefered to stay outside.

Love this thread!

We are going in July and have reservations for the Fairfield Williamsburg Patriot's Place. We booked a one-bedroom suite with a mini kitchen (not that I plan on cooking!), but it also has a sitting area with a queen pull-out sofa and I think either a king or queen in the separate bedroom. It looks really nice, and has a pool, tennis courts, arcade and activities for the kids. Most travel websites have it for around $200 a night, but I booked it through hotels.com for $89 a night!

From what I understand it is very close to Colonial Williamsburg as well as Busch Gardens.

   What a deal!! Hmmmmmmmm...I'll have to remember that website!

Sandy, there is a small catch. You have to pay IN FULL at time of booking, and also there is a $25 cancellation fee if you need to cancel for any reason. We figured it was worth it for us because of the great savings.

We are staying at the Quality Inn Lord Paget, April 14-18. Researching ticket options to BGW now, it looks like the cheapest way will be to get the 4 pack of season passes - you get 4 but pay for 3. There are other benefits, like covering your parking fee also. Any other suggestions for ticket discounts?

How about restaurant suggestions, my children are 7 and 4 and not particularly adventuresome eaters.

TIA. :D

That's interesting but still worth it. :) I stayed at Hampton Inn in Newport News. It was nice...and clean! I think the regular rate was around $114 a night, and through hotels.com I got IT for $89. I like your deal better! :teeth:

From people that live in that area, I've been told that Kings Dominion, which use to be an awesome and great kids park, has become a gang park. Now whether or not this is true I don't know since I haven't been there in 15 years but I did have family that went there 2 years ago and they said it had gotten so bad.

We used to be season passholders for KD as it is only a 30 minute drive from our house.

We stopped going 3 years ago! The crowd there is getting a little....um....I guess the best way to describe it is "rough!"

Last time we were there it was really getting run down looking.

If you can get past all that, there are some great coasters there though!

We prefer to drive the extra hour and go to Busch Gardens! Much nicer crowd of people and the park is always very clean when we've gone. Our last visit was in August 2003 during the heat wave previously mentioned and we had a great time. The longest we waited for a ride was for Corkscrew Hill in Ireland but at least you wait in dimly lit tunnels similar to Pirates of the Caribbean and it's air conditioned!

I read in the local paper that Williamsburg is getting a themed resort very similar to Wildnerness Lodge. I can't remember the name of it now but it's supposed to have an indoor water park too!

Can't wait to see it!

I found out that the resort will be The Great Wolf Lodge, built by the same firm that built the other Great Wolf Lodges! It's scheduled for completion sometime in 2005!

Blondie, we've stayed at the Great Wolf Lodge in Wisconsin Dells several times and it is wonderful! It has a huge indoor water park which makes it a nice place to visit in the winter.

The new resort in Williamsburg is supposed to have the indoor water park as well! I can't wait to see the place!

Hi Blondie,

Would you happen to know the name of this resort. Friends & I are looking for a place to stay a few extra nights?

Thanks Lisa

It's not done being built yet, and is slated to open sometime in 2005.

I think it's going to be called the Williamsburg Great Wolf Lodge, but I'm not sure.

Almost sounds like a reason to go back next year! Wonder if there's anything on the net about it?

Thanks Bunches!

Wow! This thread just keeps going. Anyway, we're staying at the Greensprings resort. Anybody know anything about it?

DW and I stayed at the Quality Inn Colony Williamsburg (looks quite similar to the Lord Paget in WWW photos) around the same time of year in 2001. NEVER AGAIN. The bathrooms were mouldy, tour buses parked behind the hotel left engines running late at night and the walls are paper-thin. There was a constant humming during the entire night that sounded like a jacuzzi running in the room next to ours. The only saving grace was that it was within walking distance of Colonial Williamsburg -- a place that needs at least 4 days to truly discover the many splendours it has to give.

Now if some of those CW tour guides would only get their history right and stop talking as though the royal governor was stealing "their" gunpowder.
