When staying at the DVC villas, has anyone ever received a free upgrade? (i.e. , reserve a studio and a check-in , given a one bedroom?)

It is EXTREMELY rare to receive a complimentary room class upgrade at a DVC resort on points. Most exceptions are due to a room being taken out of service for repairs or rehab.

Whew! That would be the upgrade of a lifetime! Kind of like going from an inside stateroom to a family suite onboard the ships!

no, you are not offered an upgrade even if the upgrade is available, you would have to call ms and cancel the studio and use more points for a 1 bedroom, except if you cancel on the day of arrival you would lose the first night of points. the only time that someone would have gotten an upgrade would have been because the studio was unsafe, need repairs, etc.

one time i had booked the yacht club for 5 people and at check in the room was unavailable due to water damage and was offered a two bedroom at the bcv.

DVC sells enough points at each resort such that it should be booked solid 365 days / year. Even at times when better rooms are vacant when you check-in, those rooms will remain vacant on the chance that a member may call or arrive and want to book the room using points.

There are rare occasions when members are upgraded to better rooms, but they are almost exclusively limited to situations where maintenance issues forced a member out of the room that was booked.

We were upgraded from a studio to a 1BR at BWV before we were DVC members. We were paying a discounted cash rate but had requested a studio with a king bed (before we knew such a thing didn't exist). When we checked in, we asked if a king bed room was available and were given a 1 BR.

We have always wondered if Disney's computer systems are linked in a way such that the front desk cast members could have known we had already requested DVC information and perhaps we were upgraded to try to sell us on DVC? If not, it worked anyway as we bought into SSR on this trip. ;)

Yes! It happened to me! My first stay at BWV was for a night in a studio. I checked in, was given the key & went up to the room. After walking down the LONG hallway (we miss you, Rich!), I opened the door and - Lo! and behold! :flower1:

I walked into a one-bedroom! What a wonderful blessing that was! WOW! It CAN happen! :cool1:

Was that a stay booked on points through MS though or a cash stay booked through CRO?

It can happen easier at BWV, BCV and VWL - they are attached to a hotel - sometime the hotel will upgrade paying guests to studios - then they have to upgrade someone else to 1-bedroom. -

one time I heard of someone on points being moved up to a 1-bedroom because all the studios were gone.

I don't think DVC does this anymore.

the DVC computer kepts a better count of the rooms than the CRO does - so 2 people getting the same room (easily done on the CRO computer system) generally does not happen on the DVC system.

when the 2 systems get the same computer system - this should stop on the CRO too.

Before we were members (Jan. '04) we were booked on rented points in a studio. When I checked in at the desk (early evening), I expected to get whatever was leftover from those who had checked in earlier in the day. BUT, the cm said, "oh it says here that you are being upgraded, what did you originally have reserved?" (perhaps not verbatim, but close), to which I replied that we were supposed to be in a preferred studio (at BWV). She then upgraded us to a one bedroom. I cannot tell you how awesome that was. We didn't ask for, but received an upgrade and it made for a perfect week at WDW! The very best part was that once my husband saw the 1BR, he FINALLY (after five years of me asking) decided that if we could stay in something comparable for the rest of our annual vacations, that we could buy into DVC. I wasted no time, and less than 3 months later, we owned 320 points, and can't wait until our first official trip home later this year!! That, in my book, is what Disney Magic is all about.
