Any problems getting new discount applied to existing reservation?

I know that I would like to visit WDW during the third week of September of '04. Should I go ahead and make a room only reservation now at rack rates or perhaps join AAA to get that rate, and hope for a better dicount/package code to come out before then? Since most dicounts usually have some disclaimer that only a select number of people can get that discount I'm affraid I'll be stuck paying the rack or AAA rate. Has anyone ever had a problem getting a newly discovered discount applied to an existing reservation? However, if I don't book now I'm affraid I might not get the hotel I want (I think I'd really like to stay at the Poly, but would take POR, too). Also, by making the reservation it may help the vacation seem more "real" even when it's still a year away. I have only been to Disney once (and it was soooo long ago that you needed a A,B,C tickets etc to ride the rides) and my DH and DS 8, DD's 6 & 2 have never been. Does anyone have any advice??

I'm fairly sure you don't have to be a AAA member when you make the ressie, just show the card at checkin. So, you may want to wait to join unless you were going to anyway.

If you try to book an AAA rate you will be asked to give CRO your membership number and expiration date. Without that information they will not give you the rate.

There is never a problem at Disney to change your rate on any existing reservation. I just changed my AAA rate to an AP rate for our December trip.

I know it may be different for others, or it may be the rule, but I've never been asked for my AAA membership number when I made reservations (always through CRO). I've used it 4 or 5 times and haven't been asked once. Of course, I've never ended using the discount since better ones eventually come out. So, it's never been an issue at check-in.

I used the AAA discount for my ASMo ressies a few weeks ago and yes they did specifically ask for my card number over the phone, to get the discounted rate.

I was not asked for my membership number ,but was told I would need it when I check in. I think its strange that Disney does not have one, uniformed way to make reservations. There seems to be such a variety of rules and regulations! I guess it all depends on who answers your phone call, which is why, after making any reservations with Disney,I call back at a different time of day,to confirm my reservations and any special requests I may have asked for. And,I have to tell ya,EVERYTIME there has been
a discrepancy in my reservations.
This is the first time I have not used a TA,and I am enjoying making all the plans on my ownand I have already saved $$$$,but I also have the time and computer access to make all those phone calls and recheck my reservations. I don't know if I would recommend self planning if that wasn't the case.
So,RECHECK for peace of mind!

This was in 2001:

I started with rack rate.
Called to switch to Annual Pass discount.
Called to switch to American Express-users code.
Called to switch open to the public code.
Called to apply a postcard code. (BTW, the postcard was for value and mods, but I called anyway and they applied it to my BC ressie, saving me another $50!)

So my ressie was changed a lot over the course of a few months. This was done very easily through CRO.

I ended up saving $700 plus from off the rack rate!

I just booked AKL concierge at rack, and I'm going to call and see if there is a AAA discount for this. Otherwise, I'll wait for a code and call as many times as I have to.

And I agree to call once in a while just to check for discrepancies.

What if I am currently a AAA member, and I plan on renewing my membership when it expires, but the dates I'm wanting to book for are 15 months away? Will that be a problem? Perhaps AAA rates won't even be released that far in advance, and I'd have to get that applied at a later date anyway?) Sorry if my questions seem "ignorant." I'm quite new to planning travel.

Thanks,

I don't know if resort rates are released yet for that time period, let alone AAA rates.

BUT, if they are, when you apply the AAA rate, they'll take your membership number and expiration date. If it expires before your trip, they'll just remind you to renew it. At least that's how it worked for me. My reservations are for September of next year, and my AAA memership expires in August.
