Fall break trip to Disney / Universal !
Too bad really. They should have kept Columbus Day for those that want that and choose another day for native Indian day. More inclusion that way.Our country has stoped referring to it as Columbus Day and refers to it as Indigenous People’s Day. The California courts swapped it for Native American Day in September.
Made worse that Columbus was an Italian sailing for Spain and NEVER came to the United States. Why in the world do we have a holiday for someone with no connection to the US?on mine it says columbus day. i passed by one of the banks and it's signage (also on their website) said it will be closed for 'columbus day', other banks in the area seem to be noncommital and just say 'closed for the federal holiday'.
i just found this, it's interesting (and makes me glad i'm not going a kid studying it for a test)-
Columbus Day, the second Monday in October, is one of the most inconsistently celebrated U.S. holidays
Based on our review of state statutes, human resources websites and other sources, only 16 states and the territory of American Samoa still observe the second Monday in October as an official public holiday exclusively called Columbus Day. (“Official public holiday” typically means government offices are closed and state workers, except those in essential positions, have a paid day off.) In four states, two territories and Washington, D.C., the day is an official public holiday but goes by a different name. Four other states and the U.S. Virgin Islands mark the day as both Columbus Day and something else. And in 26 states and the territory of Guam, the second Monday in October is pretty much like any other workday.
Happy Anniversary. We celebrate our 25th tomorrow.26th anniversary, but DH will be working!
October 9th is listed as Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples' Day on the New York City public school calendar. Schools are closed. Our country has stoped referring to it as Columbus Day and refers to it as Indigenous People’s Day. The California courts swapped it for Native American Day in September.
That was a typo. It is our COUNTY not COUNTRY that has officially changed it to Indigenous Peoples Day, sorry. It's still called Columbus Day as the official federal holiday. I call it Columbus Day. Not sure the country's on board with IPD.
Disagree. It seems only Italian Americans want to keep him as a hero. For most Americans (at least those who have studied history) his legacy is not something to be celebrated.Too bad really. They should have kept Columbus Day for those that want that and choose another day for native Indian day. More inclusion that way.
There is actually a Native American Day. The 4th Friday of September.Too bad really. They should have kept Columbus Day for those that want that and choose another day for native Indian day. More inclusion that way.
For the most part, the islands that he did “discover” have disavowed him and consider him a pariah.Made worse that Columbus was an Italian sailing for Spain and NEVER came to the United States. Why in the world do we have a holiday for someone with no connection to the US?
I would suggest some research on Columbus is overdue for you.Too bad really. They should have kept Columbus Day for those that want that and choose another day for native Indian day. More inclusion that way.
Happy Anniversary!26th anniversary, but DH will be working!
It’s extremely common in Canada (my province at least) to have land acknowledgments daily at school, in meetings, government proceedingsI would suggest some research on Columbus is overdue for you.
My DH, children, and now grandson are citizens of an indigenous tribe. Indigenous people deserve more than honor given that we stole their land. Columbus does not.
Happy Anniversary Natalie!!26th anniversary, but DH will be working!
First week of Augustgotta ask-when in the world did school start for those whose kids already are getting a fall break? the districts around us have barely been in session for 6 weeks so no breaks until a couple of days at thanksgiving.
Absolutely not. most prefer to ignore that they are on tribal land. The current/recent political climate seems to be moving backward for many. It’s extremely common in Canada (my province at least) to have land acknowledgments daily at school, in meetings, government proceedings
For example
Land acknowledgement
Winnipeg is located in Treaty One Territory, the home and traditional lands of the Anishinaabe (Ojibwe), Ininew (Cree), and Dakota peoples, and in the National Homeland of the Red River Métis. Our drinking water comes from Shoal Lake 40 First Nation, in Treaty Three Territory.
Is this common in the USA?
