The one downside for me going to Disney is having to ride the buses to the parks. I can't stand being cramped on with loads of strangers and waiting in the long lines at days end just to get back and sleep. Plus it seems waits for the busses can be quite lengthy and when you throw in a wheelchair and their family of 15, you might see 6 busses come and go before you get a ride. (I know every family with a wheelchair isn't like this but sometimes it seems that way) This year I have decided to stay at the Wilderness lodge so we can take advantage of the ferry to MK and transfer to Epcot from there. My two least favorite parks, HS and AK will need to be bussed to but we won't stay there until close so we have a better chance at a less crowded busses. I know I could rent a car but it doesn't bother me that much. Just a necessary evil. Anyone else hate the busses too or am I just a grouch when it comes to this??

I also hate the busses. We always fly into MCO and take ME (the only bus I like) but then rent a car from the onsite Alamo. We have rented a car for our 2 weeks trip in October and also for a 4 day trip in December.

I'm renting a car for my upcoming Sept 14th-22nd trip and also for our Dec 6th-16th trip. We are not fans of the jam packed buses either. We prefer getting into a nice, quiet car, knowing we'll have a seat and getting to our resort in just a few minutes, rather than having to wait for a jam packed bus full of stinky people and crying kids.

Of all the trips we have made we have taken one bus ride. Always rent a car.

My DH! Which is one of the biggest reasons why we stay deluxe every trip.

I'm with you. I always rent a car.

We've done both. We've found that for the most part the buses for Value resorts run better ie more often than deluxe buses. The worst experience we ever had was staying at the BWI. Buses there are horrid. I find not renting a car more relaxing.

Wow I am really surprised so many of you rent a car! We fly down and never even considered renting a car since Disney takes care of transportation. Maybe one year I will be able to
Convince my DH to let us rent one.

Same here. Once was enough for us.

It is different for everyone but we love the freedom of a car. Others find it a hassle but for our family it is the best choice.

Once you have rented a car, you won't want to go back to the bus.

Trying to be frugal, I am thinking about not renting a car the next trip because we are staying at VWL, however, I will tell you that I am trying to build the ROI that a car would save us money. How? Not being tied to Disney food for every meal by being able to eat offsite and get my own groceries. can you tell, I don't want to bus it!

I think I half just convinced myself to book the car...40 days to Mickey!

My DH too!! He absolutely hates the buses and the fact that it can take an hour or more to get from resorts to parks to dining locations, etc. He would rather spend the money to rent a car and be able to drive wherever we want to go.

We have rented a car the last 2 trips and will be renting one this weekend. Disclosure, we aren't doing any Disney parks this trip, just Sea World, but we'd still rent a car if we were staying on WDW property. I don't mind the buses so much in the morning, but at night, UGH!!

Ferry to MK, monorail to TTC followed by monorail to EPCOT...That's better then a direct bus?:confused3 Sounds like an hour.

The EPCOT resorts make sense for people who don't like buses. You can walk to two theme parks.

I was looking at the some maps and it looks that even if you drive your car to the Magic Kingdom you'll still have to ride a shuttle and then transfer to a monorail? Is that correct? Seems pretty inefficient to me. I guess I am just spoiled walking 10 minutes from my hotel room on Harbor Blvd. to the front gate of Disneyland. No car, no bus, no monorail, no wasted time.

Yes. The bus to MK is pretty much always faster.

When we don't rent a car we use a few cab rides here and there to overcome the worst of Disney's transportation.

Hate the busses, no... We would rather leave the driving to someone else while we are on vacation.

Do we wish they had monorails to all the resorts...YES!

We do hate the inconsiderate people who ride them though!

Walk 10 minutes (maybe a tad more) from you hotel room at the Contemporary Resort to the front gate of Magic Kingdom. No car, no bus, no monorail, no (or maybe a tad) wasted time!

You can drive directly to the other parks. If you get there before rope drop you would be able to park close enough to walk to the gate comfortably without riding the parking lot shuttle (tram).

Walt planned Magic Kingdom that way, putting a monorail (he was a train buff) ride or a ferry ride between your car and the Kingdom to add to the magic. At what was known as The Living Seas, there used to be a Hydrolator (q.v. via Google) between the outside and the main exhibit area that worked well until extreme crowds developed over the years.

I dislike the bus situation and so we rent cars. In the past we've still used the bus sometimes, but I'm fairly certain I'm over that. If I don't want to drive the rental car somewhere but don't want to take the bus, there will be taxi money budgeted for our trips. In fact I was trying to work out if we should just do that, use taxis, the whole time instead of messing with a rental car, but we do like our offsite grocery shopping and occasional forays to Sweet Tomatoes. Plus we have to get to Universal later in our trip. :)

Stayed at WL, used the boat to get to MK, had to wait 3 boats for one with space! (and although I'm mainly avoiding your talk of wheelchairs, the people with the child in the wheelchair, who were at the front of the line, had to wait ANOTHER boat cycle b/c the one that had room for others didn't have room for the wheelchair :( )

The boats are just like the buses, only without wheels, IMO. Obviously when we drive to MK we have to use a boat or a monorail, but that's OK.

:) Everything seems weird when you're a Disneyland person, but after a while you get used to the differences. :) You and I are already likely used to the weirdness that staying on Harbor across the street from the sidewalk means we have a shorter walk from room to park than people staying onsite (our room at the Grand was further to the esplanade than walking from the sidwalk outside HoJos!), so you'll get used to the weird transportation stuff at WDW. :)
