The one downside for me going to Disney is having to ride the buses to the parks. I can't stand being cramped on with loads of strangers and waiting in the long lines at days end just to get back and sleep......
This year I have decided to stay at the Wilderness lodge so we can take advantage of the ferry to MK and transfer to Epcot from there.
I dislike the bus situation and so we rent cars. In the past we've still used the bus sometimes, but I'm fairly certain I'm over that. If I don't want to drive the rental car somewhere but don't want to take the bus, there will be taxi money budgeted for our trips. In fact I was trying to work out if we should just do that, use taxis, the whole time instead of messing with a rental car, but we do like our offsite grocery shopping and occasional forays to Sweet Tomatoes. Plus we have to get to Universal later in our trip.
Stayed at WL, used the boat to get to MK, had to wait 3 boats for one with space! (and although I'm mainly avoiding your talk of wheelchairs, the people with the child in the wheelchair, who were at the front of the line, had to wait ANOTHER boat cycle b/c the one that had room for others didn't have room for the wheelchair

)
The boats are just like the buses, only without wheels, IMO. Obviously when we drive to MK we have to use a boat or a monorail, but that's OK.
I was looking at the some maps and it looks that even if you drive your car to the Magic Kingdom you'll still have to ride a shuttle and then transfer to a monorail? Is that correct? Seems pretty inefficient to me. I guess I am just spoiled walking 10 minutes from my hotel room on Harbor Blvd. to the front gate of Disneyland. No car, no bus, no monorail, no wasted time.

Everything seems weird when you're a Disneyland person, but after a while you get used to the differences.

You and I are already likely used to the weirdness that staying on Harbor across the street from the sidewalk means we have a shorter walk from room to park than people staying onsite (our room at the Grand was further to the esplanade than walking from the sidwalk outside HoJos!), so you'll get used to the weird transportation stuff at WDW.
