Any I 95 restaurants open on Christmas?

I know that route and have taken it going north. I live just a couple of miles south of the Mixing Bowl, where the beltway and 95 intersect in Springfield, VA.

So far, I'm not having any luck. The chain restaurants I've checked are closed (Bob Evans, Macaroni Grill, Outback, etc.). I also called a really good local grill that serves excellent real meals (not just burgers), but they are closed, too, and I called the Mount Vernon Inn (yes, at Mount Vernon). They are also closed.

I tried searching on OpenTable.com, and located some non-chain restaurants that are open Christmas Day, but they are way off the route you are taking and the cost is pretty high.

I'm just not finding anything, but I'll keep looking.

Thank you for trying! Oh and I have 4 children too!

Once, when we were traveling in Ohio on Christmas Day, we found a Pilot service station (the type that features showers for truckers) open, with an open Subway inside. Chances are you might find something similar on or right off I-95, if you feel like driving with a little risk.

BTW, I'm originally from New York, so I understand what you are saying about Chinese restaurants. However, one of the best Chinese restaurants I've ever eaten in was in Knoxville, Tennessee. That was back in the early 1970s, so I doubt it's there anymore. You really don't know what you're going to find when you travel, unless you're willing to try it.

Most of the Chinese restaurants here are ran by Chinese people- at least I think they are Chinese. They are not "good ol boys thats for sure ;) English certainly isn't their first language cause the menus are always misspelled.

A true Southerner knows the plural of the word "shrimp" is not "shrimps"... :rotfl:

Oh yes! We are driving from Western NJ. So through a tiny bit of PA and Delaware into Maryland on I95- we usually do the beltway around DC- heading west usually then back onto 95. Thanks for anyplace you could find I am thinking we'll be right around the virginia area at dinner time.
Or maybe earlier so lunch at the md/de border?

Well we are about 10 minutes off I-95 in Maryland (not too far from the DE border) - what kind of lunch would you like?

We are leaving about 5pm to drive North on I-95 to the airport in Philly and we were debating what to do for dinner that night because nothing will be open. We plan to eat a big lunch at home then eat dinner at the Philly airport before we board our 8:50pm flight to SC.

If we had planned this better we could have fed you lunch then hitched a ride with you to SC!

Glad you posted this. I am driving on Christmas Day too. There are not a lot of restaurants in the rural areas that I drive through at any time so I'm sure Christmas will be pretty deserted.

I'll bet I can find something in Vicksburg with all of the casinos though. Those places never close. I may spend the night there. I have to be in Little Rock to fix Christmas dinner (noon I hope) and then get to New Orleans by 10:30 am the next day.

Reminds me of when I bought my condo. I had a birthday party (for me so I had to be there) on Thursday night and then had to be at my closing by 1:30 pm on Friday - just in time for Katrina.

LOL! Too bad we would have traded a meal for 6 for a ride along although you would have to ride on the roof! Where are you heading to? We are going to Kiawah.

Waffle House will probably be the only thing open after you get into Va. North Carolina your likely to see gas stations closed as well. Have a safe trip.

HA! We are heading to my hometown Charleston to see the Grandparents (about 20 miles from Kiawah). Be careful on the interstate. We would have driven but DS gets horribly carsick so that would have made for a long, miserable ride. The hour drive to Philly to get on the plane will be bad enough!

I know there are a few restaurants on the Interstate (in the middle like on a Turnpike - Sbarro, Roy Rogers, etc...) that would most likely be open on Christmas Day but if you want to stop by our house for some turkey and dressing then just come on by! We can send all the kids down to the basement to play the Wii to burn off some energy before we all hit the road.

A PP mentioned Waffle House, and although its not the height of haute cuisine, it offers something hot to eat if you're hungry. There is one very conviently located in Fredericksburg, about 30-35 miles south of the Mixing Bowl, and with easy exit from and re-entry to I-95.

According to the Waffle House website, " Waffle House® restaurants are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (including Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day)." The most convenient Waffle House for your route would be:

Waffle House
(540) 785-9058
2990 Plank Rd
Fredericksburg, VA 22401

Directions from Springfield, VA are:

1: I-95 S toward FREDERICKSBURG. 30.1 miles

2: Merge onto PLANK RD / VA-3 W via EXIT 130B toward CULPEPER. 0.5 miles

3: Turn LEFT onto MALL CT. <0.1 miles

4: Turn LEFT onto PLANK RD. <0.1 miles

5: End at 2990 Plank Rd
Fredericksburg, VA 22401-4950, US

Go to this website http://www.wafflehouse.com/ and on the lower left side click on locations. On the next page, search for Fredericksburg, VA, and on the page after that select the Plank Road location. It will pull up a map for you.

This could work out well, because if your family does stop off at the home of ClarabelleCowFan (wow, what a great offer!), you'll probably be ready to eat again by the time you get to Fredericksburg. And if no one is hungry by the time you get to Fredericksburg, there are other Waffle Houses further south.

Hope this helps!

I just called them and they are NOT open Christmas day.

I am still looking for something in the south suburbs but so far . . . nothing.
