I am thinking chains. I remember a few years ago we drove down to FL on Christmas and NOTHING was open. Thankfully I had sandwiches and plenty of snacks to carry us over.
Well we are driving down again(*to SC though not FL) on Christmas and am wondering if I should pack lunch and dinner. Anyone know of any places that are open.

We're looking too. except we are going from Wisconsin to Ohio so looking for somewhere off of I94 and then near Rockford Illinois (we are staying overnight at a hotel there before hitting our destination).

I traveled on the 25th last year, I was so stinkin hungry, I was road rage waiting to happen :lmao:

Waffle Houses are usually open on Christmas Day
Scattered, Smothered and Covered!!!

MMM waffle house- I go scattered and smothered(not covered gravy is a big no go in the north) Thanks for that tip.
I am figuring on packing some fried chicken. But hey it's vacation I don't want to cook if I don't have to.

I looked at their website and it doesn't say. But often they are open on Christmas Day
Scattered Smothered and Covered is for hash browns. Smothered -I think is onions and covered is cheese.
I never get the waffles -I usually get a breakfast sandwich (sausage or bacon egg and cheese) and hasbrowns.
Yummy

I am very sure that Denny's never closes. About ten years ago they decided to close their stores on Christmas and actually had to buy and get locks installed on the front doors. Anyway, they decided it was an experiment that failed. Their web site says thery will be open Christmas, but some locaions may not be open all day.

For some reason I think Cracker Barrels are open on Christmas, if not usually chinese rest. are open. My aunt and uncle always goes our for chinese on christmas day.

Quite a few Cracker Barrels were open on Thanksgiving, don't know about Christmas however. Am guessing that anyplace that is open will close early, so you might have better luck finding something for lunch than later in the day.

DD and I are flying into Atlanta from Okinawa then we drive to Florida...originally we were flying on the 25th and then drive down the same night. I was afraid that nothing would be open on the drive so I changed our dates to the 23rd, now we will drive down Christmas eve.

Cracker Barrel is actually closing at 2 on Christmas eve and NOT open on Christmas. (so people can spend time with their families I guess)
So that is out and being from NY I don't trust Chinese in the south. :rotfl2: But hey maybe we'll have to give it a try.
(sounds like I'm packing a meal)

Most of the Chinese restaurants here are ran by Chinese people- at least I think they are Chinese. They are not "good ol boys thats for sure ;) English certainly isn't their first language cause the menus are always misspelled.
Anyway -I can't imagine the Chinese would be that different.

Clarabelle come on up north and I'll show some real chinese food.
We had some in North Carolina one time and yes it was the same "stuff" on the menu- just lacking the taste. But again we are chinese food snobs. And I am sure that there are good ones down south I just don't know which ones are and which are not. Even here there are some bad ones.

I'm thinking scattered smothered will be our lunch. Then I'll bring something for dinner. The place we are stopping at has a microwave (I think it might even have a stove?) but all I'm doing that day is microwave heat up.

I'll have to try that sometime. Maybe the Chinese here dull down their food to appeal to Southern tastes or something
Anyway good luck on the restaurant search. We are traveling as well on Christmas Day. To West VA for snowtubing

:rotfl2: Oh I just remembered a conversation we had with an employee at The Cracker Barrel last time we drove down.I was with my then 12 year old son and this woman was very nice and friendly.
Got to talking.
Started talking about her dh. Then about his family. Then about how they eat Squirrel.:scared1: "And not just the good parts they eat the whole squirrel"

We get in the car and my son turns to me and says "Mom I didn't know there was a good part to eat on a squirrel":rotfl2:

OP, where are you starting your drive from? I live in Northern VA, about 1 mile from I-95, and it would be helpful if I knew if/when you would be passing through so I could check around a little for you. Also, do you have kids? That might make a difference.

I was wondering this too. I live right off I-95 near the Delaware/Maryland border.

Oh yes! We are driving from Western NJ. So through a tiny bit of PA and Delaware into Maryland on I95- we usually do the beltway around DC- heading west usually then back onto 95. Thanks for anyplace you could find I am thinking we'll be right around the virginia area at dinner time.
Or maybe earlier so lunch at the md/de border?

I know that route and have taken it going north. I live just a couple of miles south of the Mixing Bowl, where the beltway and 95 intersect in Springfield, VA.

So far, I'm not having any luck. The chain restaurants I've checked are closed (Bob Evans, Macaroni Grill, Outback, etc.). I also called a really good local grill that serves excellent real meals (not just burgers), but they are closed, too, and I called the Mount Vernon Inn (yes, at Mount Vernon). They are also closed.

I tried searching on OpenTable.com, and located some non-chain restaurants that are open Christmas Day, but they are way off the route you are taking and the cost is pretty high.

I'm just not finding anything, but I'll keep looking.
