Any Experience With Box Wine in a Checked Bag?

We frequently take bottled beverages in checked bags, often the luggage get opened, we don't care as long as they leave the stuff there which they always do. Wifey has taken a liking to a certain wine only available in a 3 liter box an I'm wondering if the fact that it's not in a clear bottle with visible contents might prompt confiscation or other issues. I don't care if they open the box and inspect the clear plastic bag, I just want it to be there. Any experience with this?

There is no way for you to be "there" if they open your checked luggage to inspect it.

Don't want to be and I don't care if they open all my bags, my only concern is that they can't see what's in the box wine as they can with a clear, usually plastic, bottle of some other liquid and I don't know if that matters. We'll soon see, I just purchased our stuff and we fly down on the 29th.

I think a cardboard box may be likely to break open than a bottle. The bag inside may not be able to with stand the compression. I would put a trash bag around it if you do pack it.

It won't be a problem to check this, but you won't be there when it is opened for inspection. That happens after you check your bag.

Thanks for the replies. We have a pretty good routine after 15 WDW trips, 14 of them via air, and this is the only new wrinkle in our program. I actually wouldn't care if they, carefully, took the bag out of the box. We're staying in a BoardWalk studio with a small 'fridge and if it will fit I'm going to take the bag and put it the freezer to chill it for our Food&Wine travels.

I don't think they do anything carefully. they will either take it or they won't. I just think a bag of wine (because the cardboard is likely to get smushed) is just asking for a leak. and then you can ruin not only your vacation, but the vacation of the other people whose bags happen to be under yours.

They aren't going to open the wine box. Putting this in a checked bag is not an issue. It's highly unlikely that the inner bag will leak, even if your luggage is tossed around. I've packed bottles of wine in my checked bag many, many times with no problems.

bottles are stronger than bags.

Guys, he said "I don't care if they open the box and inspect the clear plastic bag, I just want it to be there."

Not that he wants to be there. :)

Those boxes around the bags of wine seem to be strong. Maybe put them in a hard-sided bag, but putting a bag around the box can't hurt.

We've checked them before without any issues! Should be fine.

Hello Bill,

I am interested in what kind of wine it is.

I'll be at BWV on Sunday. Would have been happy to give it a ride down for you as I drive from Maryland, but I see you've already purchased it.

(I'll be bringing a couple of bottles anyway.)

Hope you have a nice visit! I am looking forward to this trip so much. Can't wait to relax on my balcony and watch a few ducks.

Just a little packing tip. If you can get a few diapers they are excellent to wrap bottles that might leak. Then place the diaper covered bottle in a plastic bag or XL ziploc.

Thanks for the offer! We're toting some Corbett Canyon Pinot Grigio, the Pa liquor stores don't seem to carry that in bottles. If you stroll the 'boards in the morning and you see a guy having a coffee and cigar on the bench by Atlantic Dance around 6:30 - 7:30 stop and say 'Hi', I like to start the day off by watching the sunrise.

I will! I'm always up early and out walking. (Not just because my doc says I have to ;).

I have done this many times in my checked bag and never had an issue. I put the box of wine in a large ziploc bag.
