When I get back from spring break, April 7th, Cheerleading tryouts start. On April 7 - 9 our coach will teach us one dance and cheer rountine. On April 10th we have to preform that routine. I am thinking that it will be a group routine because she said that there will be fliers, and I'm pretty sure that you would need more than one person for that.;) But anyways, me and my friend are trying out (and yes there are more people then just us), neither of us have had any cheerleading experience for a long time. This is just a regular school cheer. squad, nothing fancy. This is for grades 7 and 8. I really need help because I do not want to get there and look like a fool. I am already doing b-ball, so I am in pretty good shape. The coach said I will most likely be a flier since I am one of the smallest trying out. Any help on what I should expect and work on? BTW this is not a competition squad it is just a reg. football cheering squad.

ah ive been in this situation. Cheering is very very fun =) Just make sure to smile (they love smiles) and try and look like you know exactly what your doing...even if you dont. Be sure of yourself that you'll get it. We had to learn a dance to a mix song, and we did it as a group when I tried out my first year, then the next year, (i was a cheerleader already, one of the "judges") coach made them do i cheer instead, it was the easiest one, they still learned the dance though. And the cheer they had to do by themselves. If you have to do a cheer, by yourself or not, be loud, be confident and dont forget to smile. =)

Good Luck

I'm a cheerleader on my school's 7th and 8th grade squad. :)
We do a lot of flips so I would suggest practicing back-hand springs, cartwheels, splits, etc.
Always smile when you are trying out.
And if you are going to be a flier you should be familiar with the mounts your squad does. So ask some other cheerleaders to show you the mounts they do.

i'm a cheerleader and i made the team in 7th and 8th grade. i think i can help!

try to stretch everyday until tryouts, when it comes time to actually fly and jump it will help a lot! when you go home after learning the routine practice it with your friend. that way you have a better chance of remembering it! and don't worry if you and your friend are not in the same tryout group, part of trying out is the coaches seeing if you get along with everyone. oh and yes, you do need at least three people for a stunt unless the single base is really strong, but you probably wont be co-eding. when you are up in the air, assuming that you will be flying during tryouts, suck up your weight as much as you can. what i mean is that youwant to suck in your stomch to your back, keep your head up, keep your butt tight(coaches call it pennypinching), and smile the whole time, even if you are wobbbling a bit. when you are cheering, keep your voice loud, but NOT screeching, that sounds horrible. wear sneakers, shorts(not too short), and a semi-loose t-shirt. if its too tight them it can get hard to move in. too short shorts will make you look bad in the coaches eyes. uhmm...what else? wear your hair in a ponytail if its long enough, and, i hate to say it, be perky!

:thumbsup2 :cheer2:

I used to cheer from the end of second grade to the end of 7th and then i had to quite due to an injury. But anywho If your going to be a flier really control your body. First time going up stand tall and suck in your stomach becuase it sort of evens your weight out and helps your bases out. Since your on a middle school team i think all you can legaly do is fulls. Which is where your bases have there arms all the way up and such.

Before try outs strech. Practice jumps, breathe, and actualy eat something. The worset thing to do is be a flier who gets dizzy and falls. When your up if you don't feel comfortable with the bases tell them.

And also the smallest girls don't always go up...I was the smallest girl on my team when i first started in 2nd grade and i was lifting middle schoolers. I only was ever a filer in a thigh stand or a prep.

Varsity. com (a cheerleading site) usually has some great tips on their fourms.

I might try out this year again! For my junior year of high school

oh also keep your smiles natural. No winking or head nodding like they do in bring it on.

Bring it on isn't real though the first one was the closet to actualy cheerleading

Basically just be happy and smile. Be very confident and just sure of what you're doing. Don't be afraid to ask questions.

I was thinking about trying out for my high school team because it really isnt hard...
Lot's of girls I know tryed out without any experience and made it and have learned alot.
But I'm going to be a junior next year and will probably be on JV...
