Another tipping question. Do you tip when you pick up food?

Didn't feel like cooking tonight, so I called a local restaurant and placed an order for pick-up. After I ordered, the girl on the phone told me, "Your total is $25.36 and that does not include gratuity." Huh? I never tip when I pick up food. Didn't think I was supposed to. When I went pick up the food, the receipt for me to sign had a big star by the total AND by the tip line. Do people normally tip when they pick up food?

No, not when we call in an order and pick it up. I wasn't aware that it was appropriate in that situation. I'll be interrested in hearing if others do this.
I have never had anyone tell me that the tip was not included in that price, either.

A tip is to thank my server. If I didn't have a server, who exactly am I tipping? This is like having a tip jar on the counter at McDonald's. No, I don't tip for takeout.

No, the tip is for the wait person who takes your order, refills your drinks, makes sure you have everything you need as far as enough napkins, silverware, etc. I do not tip someone who hands me a bag and takes my money for payment. That was not service as far as I am concerned.

I don't tip for take-out either. If there is a 'tip jar,' I might leave $1-$2, but I don't tip a specific person (as another poster mentioned, who is supposed to be the recipient of the tip in this situation?).

I dont.
But I remember years ago, when I was a waitress. A guy called in an order for a few things. I had to put the soup in a bowl, pack crackers, spoons, etc.. and the food, ketchup, gravy, and the drinks, straws, had to wrap a piece of pie, get utensils, napkins etc.. I remember thinking, this is a pain in the butt, it took me 5 minutes to get it all ready. Then the guy picked it up, and he gave me a couple of bucks tip. I thought it was really nice and appreciated it. :flower:
But if I am picking up pizza-no way!

I carry out from a Mexican restaurant a few blocks away. I order at the bar, so I usually throw in the change from the check or maybe a dollar. I would not tip at a fast food place or anywhere that is specifically designed for carry out food(except I tip at Sonic). :)

But if I am picking up pizza-no way!

What about the person who had to put the pizza in the box, put the box in the heater, wait for you to come, ring it up in the register, take your money, take the pizza out of the oven, etc......if you ordered appetizers they have to package those up as well. There really seems to be no difference but maybe I just don't know.

On that note, no I do not tip for carryout.

No I don't.

In college I worked at a Dunkin Donuts for a while though, and I did receive tips sometimes from people just coming in for a dozen to go. I even had a guy tip me a $20 once for $5 worth of donuts. :confused3

Are you calling take out where you go in and pick up the food or where they bring it out to the car? If I go in...I don't tip...if they come out to the car...usually 2 trips...one for the money and the second to bring change and the food...then I tip.

If it is a restaurant, yes. Most restaurants have a server assigned to take outs along with their tables, if there is a counter it is usually that person.

True they are not refilling your drinks but they are taking your order, packing it, making sure you have napkins, silverware etc.

Now as far as fast food never. :)

If they bring it to my car (ie, Outback, Applebee's, NOT McD's), I'll tip a couple bucks, depending on what I got, how much, etc. A friend of mine waits part time and he said that they usually get 'stuck' working the takeout for a portion of their shift, or someone gets stuck for a whole shift, or something, so they lose out on good tips inside.

No, no tip for take out. Although when paying by credit card, that tip line will be present because that is what is printed out normally. Pretty bold to star the line and expect the tip....

At this place, I had to go in to pick up the food and I picked it up at the bar. They had a tip jar, but I assumed it was for the bar. BTW... I HATE tip jars...I think they are so tacky unless it's a bar. I didn't tip...didn't think it was needed. Glad to see I'm not the only one. :)

Not at all!! As far as the pizza example...the cooks & cashiers are not in tipped positions. I waitressed & because I was able to help in the kitchen sometimes to help get my orders out I did run the register inbetween customers and cut pizzas from the oven...but in the end that helped me because my food got out quicker.
