Another tipping question. Do you tip when you pick up food?

yes I do at a restaurant. when I go in and pick it up like Red lobster /Olive Garden ,Applebee's those places and yes also curbside pickup they do expect tips . when they work curbside in the state of NJ they still only make $2.13 an hour plus tips also when I go in I don't give the usual 20% or more, I give 10 % for pickup inside

I do tip however when the pizza is delivered to my house. If the cooks/cashiers are not tipped positions (I didn't think so either) then why do they have a cup at the register with the title tips? There is no other person there but the cashier. If the cashier steps away then one of the cooks come up and take my $. Just wondering? :confused3

That was rude. I'm surprised she didn't add the tip in for you

I've not done the curbside thing. But, I don't tip when I pick up pizza or Chinese.

I've never done curbside, but I would probably tip for that. If I'm walking in to pick it up--no tip. Especially no tip if the tip line is highlighted. I might even call the manager.

It was presumptious to star the tipline and rude to say it does not include tip.

I do tip upon take out and usually tip 20%. I've worked in restaurants and seen what goes into putting together a take out order but if someone were to say that or do that I'd think twice and probably have a word with a manager.

I do not tip at fast food restaurants as they make at least minimum wage. I usually tip at Starbucks and Chipotle and that usually results in free drinks and food in the future.

we tip for curbside, Outback, but we don't tip if we go in ourselves to pick it up.

No way!!! you called it in, picked it up and served yourself at home. No tipping needed.

I don't tip for carry-out pizza, chinese or fast food, but when we order from Texas Roadhouse, Ruby Tuesday or Chilis or someplace like that, I will usually tip 10-15%.

Apparently, people in the restaurant industry think that you should be expected to tip when you pick up food at a restaurant where the wait staff is normally tiped (i.e., not at fast food restaurants or at a pizza parlor that's carry-out only). Because so many people get their food that way, one of the servers spends their entire shift taking to-go orders over the phone and packing them. They get paid their regular wage, which is under minimum wage, so they need tips. Because of that, we do tip when we order food, but we rarely order food because we disagree with the practice. I'd be okay with a small tip of about 10-15% at curbside places, but tipping when you go in is just silly.

I have never tipped for pick-up/take out. That is just ridiculous. I'll tip for a full-service sit-down restaurant meal and/or home delivery only. Those are real services. My gas and time to go and get the meal, the only one that deserves a tip in that case is me and the chef. And since cooks aren't tipped positions, I'll keep it all to myself thank you. No, I don't consider someone packing napkins in a bag to be "tip-worthy".

I tip at the same places for takeout...I give them a few bucks, not the 20 percent I would give for sit down service though..and if its curbside then I tip a little more than if I have to walk in and get it.

just one thing I would like to add that I do hope that all the people who don't tip very good or not at all I hope that if they have children they all work in a restaurant or in another tipped position and when they come home after 10-12 hours of waiting on people and don't make that much they will change their way of tipping. in nj servers get paid $2.13 an hour and they are taxed on this and their tips. and let's not forget they have to tip bussers, bar tenders and food runners JMHO

I don't tip for pizza at pick up or at a fast food place just at a restaurant where I would go in and pick up.

carry-out, never. carside, sure a couple of bucks. the 'Tip Jars' inside of Starbucks and counter services like that? never ever, they should be illegal. :earsboy:

We mostly get Mickey Dees, Burger King, Wendy's, Pizza Hut, or another local pizza shop for take out. I don't tip in these places. When we order to go at a local restaurant though, I do tip a little on take out. I know the waitress has to package the extras up like, salad dressing on the side, rolls, butter, and a few other things, but I don't tip 15 or even 20% when I get it to go. The bill is normally about $30 bucks or so and I'll toss in an additional $2 or $3 at most.

just to add I don't tip people that make a regular wage like in their tip jars just the people in tipped positions but I would tip the AAA for changing a tire or something even though I know he doesn't live off tips

Yes I do. If the server is the one who assembles my meal, I tip her/him a dollar or so depending on how much has had to be boxed and assembled. If it is a fast food place then no. But if it is a restaurant where the main part of the business is sit down, and it is not a fast food place, I do give a tip if the person who has assembled the food brings it to me. If I pick it up at a cashier then no.

I order carry out from the diner, and since the server boxes and packs up the food, I tip her a dollar or two. At Waffle House, I watched the server cook the eggs and pancakes and decided I'd tip her. When I paid at the cashier, I saw that a sign posted there said that carryouts would have an additional 10% added on as gratuity. I was taken aback and put what I had been going to tip, more than 10%, away. If I order from Kentucky Fried Chicken though, I do not tip, they are set up for carryout and are fast food. At the diner or Waffle House the server is doing me a personal service and are helping me beyond their usual job.

I tip if they bring it out to the car, like at Chili's.
The only place where I tip if I go in myself is at our local Chinese place. The man always double- and triple-checks our order (which is usually pretty large), packs everything super-neatly in nice boxes and in a nice cardboard carrying tray, makes sure nothing will leak out in my car, puts in a big handful of extra fortune cookies when he sees my kids with me, and always tells me very sincerely that he hopes my family will really enjoy the meal. After going there a few times I noticed that he always did all these things so I started giving him a tip whenever I get food there.

I've been noticing tip jars everywhere lately! I even saw one at Borders the other day, and I'm not talking about the "give a penny, save a penny" type of little cups either. What's next, tip jars at the bank? Hey why not, someone has to count your money!

For take out and fast food places, I do not tip.

Interesting to see all of the replies. I still don't think they needed a tip. All they did was dump my pasta into a container and put the containers in a bag. No napkins or silverware (they asked if I wanted that when I arrived). I guess the whole "your total does not include gratuity" turned me off. I just think the whole tipping thing has gotten out of hand.

I think the blatant tip request would turn me off too.
If we order food from a sit down restuarant, I will tip about $2 just to say thanks for packing it all up. otherwise, no.
sandwich places...no. pizza pick up. no.
