Sorry, I am a newbie had have a lot of easy questions. If I bank, let's say, 50 points from 2020 and then I have 150 points come available for my 2021 use year - if I book something that takes 100 points, for example - will they use the banked points first and then I will have 100 2021 points left over that I could bank into 2020?

What is the order that points are used?

What is the order that points are used?
The order is:
  1. Holding
  2. Banked
  3. Borrowed
  4. Transferred
  5. Annual Allotment
So in your example, the 2020 banked points would be taken first, followed by 50 of the 2021 annual allotment. You would then have 100 2021 UY points that can be banked into 2022.

Do you have to borrow points prior to booking or will it automatically give you the option to borrow if you are booking something that is more points then you have available for the current year?

You can only borrow to book a specific reservation. You don’t just borrow points into the current UY in anticipation of needing them for a later reservation. Except during COVID times last year, cancelled reservations made with borrowed points, the borrowed points remain in the current UY. Those points are not unborrowed , and they can’t be banked back to the original UY, so they must be used in the current UY or they will be lost. So it’s wise to be cautious making reservations that will borrow points unless you absolutely intend to use them. If I recall, there is a very short window immediately following the creation of a reservation that allows you to reverse points back to the original UY, but it’s very short.

Oh, ok I kind of thought you could only borrow for a specific reservation, but the comment above listing the order confused me because the person has it taking borrowed points before yearly points, which doesn’t make sense unless you have to pre borrow them before making reservations.

If you had borrowed points for a reservation and then modified or cancelled, the banked points would still be in that UY and get used in the order listed above.

Oh… so if you borrow and then cancel the points can’t go back to the use year they came from? So if you borrow your committed to using thoes borrowed points?

Well committed might not be the right word, nothing makes you have to use them, it’s just that by the end of the current UY if they aren’t used they are lost. So if you want to say they are committed to the current UY than that would be accurate. That’s why I said previously, be cautious borrowing until you absolutely know you intend to use them this UY.

Banked points and borrowed points are not bankable to the following UY, that’s why they are used first. After holding points of course, which are only allowed to be used out less than 60 days. In case you wonder, holding points are points from a reservation that was cancelled less than 30 days prior to the reservation.

Both banking and borrowing are final transactions. Once they are are moved to a new UY, that is where they stay and can not be moved again.

So, those borrowed points are moved forward when you make a reservation needing them and will need to be used by the end of that UY if you decide to cancel or change the trip you borrowed them for in the first place.
