Animal Kingdom

Fort Wilderness is the premier camping/rv destination that is an ORIGINAL WDW resort from 1971. It was conceived and approved by Walt Disney himself before his death.

Fort Wilderness has one of the most loyal set of returning guests and is the primary destination for families who want a friendly, relaxing resort to visit while enjoying the beautiful outdoors.

Animal Kingdom has animals and opened in 1998.

So they are slightly different.

Let me echo what Tiggerdad and Bama Ed have said. Animal Kingdom is very impressive and in my opinion worth at least 3 days to explore if you can devote the time to it. With animals from around the world. Some closer than others but all behind some sort of barrier. Inside The Fort native species roam free. TaylorFamily4 I would heartily recommend you check out the ANNIMAL SIGHTINGS AT THE FORT thread. I will further add do not disregard out of hand any warnings you may read about the Squirrels in Fort Wilderness. While cute and innocent looking they are the most vicious predators you will ever find

Wow but wouldn't that be great if there was a campground in or next to AK. Hey one can fantasize, it's Disney! :flower::butterfly

tinkerdorabelle, that would be an interesting combination.

Sort of like down in Florida about 15 miles due west of West Palm Beach is a drive through lion exhibit called Lion Country Safari. The lions and other animals roam free so keep your windows rolled up. It's been there for decades.

Immediately next to it (or consider it a part of it) is a KOA. So if you want to camp literally NEXT TO the wild animals, you can.

Just off WDW property there is a lot of construction of hotels and restaurants plus other development out along Western Way past Hwy 429 (toll) in the Flamingo Crossings build-out. Just inside the property is the back side of the AK safari ride. But there is enough land in-between Flamingo Crossings and AK for a Fort 2 creation. We could resurrect the old Explorer's Club from Downtown Disney as the lobby where campers check in to explore the jungle just outside their door.

It's an idea. :confused3

PS - some of that land in-between is currently a nursery for AK trees and plants (and probably the rest of WDW). But that spot would make awesome pull-through sites.
