We just got our angel tree girl. She’s 9. Unlike past years, she didn’t ask for toys. It’s been a long time since I’ve known a 9 year old girl so if you’ve got ideas, please share! We always start with a backpack filled with school supplies/art supplies. Then the normal things: pjs, toothbrush, toothpaste, underwear, socks, clothes, etc. what I’m looking for help with is what kind of toys, books, etc do 9 yr old girls like this year. What would be FUN STUFF for a girl we don’t know?? Thanks for any help.

Agree with the graphic novel type books, which could cover a pretty large reading range without being too easy for the advanced or too difficult for the not advanced. Raina Telgemeier books are favorites in our house with DD. , or the Pheobe and her Unicorn series or Baby Sitters club as mentioned above. Crafty type things are great. The nicer "blind bag" things, like the LOL dolls, or *sigh* the Poopsie unicorn horn things. Squishies are still huge in our area. Lego sets, especially Lego Friends. Oh, and fuzzy socks.

Odd question for you, the Phoebe and unicorn books - is the print bigger than the Baby Sitters Club. My daughter doesn't like the baby sitters because the print is really small and hard for her to read.

Going to agree with the arts and crafts as others she said. My 9 year old daughter loves arts and crafts, one of her favorites is bracelet making. You could get a small tackle box like thing and fill it with bracelet making supplies and maybe a book about it Incase she doesn’t already know hoe to make different kinds. My daughter is also a bookworm, she really enjoys a few different series, Junie b Jones, dork diaries, diary of a wimpy kid, and the Harry Potter series though those are above her reading level.

Mama to a 9 year old here! I agree that the arts and craft kits are a big hit with most girls this age: make your own necklace/bracelets, sand art, make your own headbands, etc.

My girly has really enjoyed the crystal growing kits.

Books: "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" and "Dog Man" (which is kind of very simplistic comic book style) seem to be well liked.

Have fun shopping!

Like PP's craft stuff is very popular. I saw this new toy called Blume secret surprise play set. My daughter would have loved that! LOL's are always popular (I don't know the "it" collection of the moment, but I remember hunting for one particular series a few years back.) Small polaroid camera, any type of key fob for backpacks is big too. If you can, go to Justice and look around at the back by register "junk" section (lol) you're likely to find a plethora of stuff girls at that age love.

Books my daughter loved at that age were the Emily Windsnap books.

I know this is random, but I’m currently shopping for my friends’s daughter who just turned 9, and stumbled upon this today at TJMaxx:

https://smile.amazon.com/Wet-Brush-...lor+your+own+brush&qid=1572999939&sr=8-2&th=1
I was able to pick it up for $5.99. I wish I’d have bought both that they had there, now seeing this for $13.99. But, it seems like a perfect angel tree gift, as it’s fun as a color your own, but also nice for the child to get a new hairbrush.

I definitely agree with art supplies, and love the new backpack idea! (also the Polaroid camera - and lots of film, that someone else mentioned!)

For books - something from the American Girl series? or maybe The Boxcar Children?

The little girls I know are also into decorative pillows - fuzzy ones or those ones with sequins that change color depending on which way you brush them. (Here's a link: sequin pillows or they have them right at Walmart, Kohl's, etc.)

If you're wondering about toys: Squishmallows are big puffy cute pillows that are super popular, LOL OMG dolls are the hot line right now. We are sold out constantly, Slime is still hot, Lego friends sets are still great sellers, squeezamals are small sensory plush, thinking putty, paint sets, drawing sets, be careful about checking craft kit reviews as a LOT of the ones sold are terrible. Like 5$ worth of stuff in a 20$ box, unclear instructions, terrible quality.

Other ideas: A nice nightlight or glowy plush, string lights for decorating her space or making forts, Scarves, gloves, a nice new backpack, lunch kit, cute hats, headbands that are decorative or beaded, a nice plush throw blanket, board games she can play with family

I have an 8 1/2 yo and she loves stuffed animals. Hatchimals are fun. She likes to read graphic novels and her favorites are the Raina Telgemeier series and dog man. She still does some arts and crafts. She likes unicorns.

Arts and crafts for 9 year old girls are usually good- I work for a toy drive and that is what most girls that age request- of course you get the few that ask for sports equipment etc but typically it is arts and crafts.
Arts and crafts;
Crafty type things are great.

Yes, YES and another YES to arts & crafts. :cheer2:

I JUST found about this new type of YARN last night, that is very different than the usual. It's called LOOPS Yarn. It is made in such a way that the loops one usually has to make with knitting needles or a crochet hook, are already stitched into the yarn. So one just does FINGER knitting. NO knitting needles or crochet hook necessary. It is great for kids to do on their own, with minimal instruction. So, OP, the little 9 yr can make a scarf or infinity scarf to go with her new backpack if you choose coordinating colors. :thumbsup2 (2 balls of yarn should be enough to make a scarf for her.)

The yarn has actually been out for a year, but I hadn't heard about it before. Doing research last night, I've learned that many, many people have already made so many projects that go really quickly. A few crafters have even gotten their DHs hooked and are doing it while watching their sporting events on TV.

It "knits" up easily as one doesn't have to wind & form the loops around needles. All that is already done. One just has to lay two rows of loops back to back. And depending on if one pushes the front loop through the back loop, or pushes the back loop through the front loop, determines if one is making a "knit" stitch or a "purl" stitch. It's that easy!

Here's a video of it. They are all doing the "knit" stitch where it's all smooth and the stitches look like little "V"s. Towards the end, when you see the bottom of the scarf, on the right side there are 3 raised rows, those are "purl" rows. Yet, once learns the two stitches, one can put them anywhere and can create her own design. :lovestruc

Here is a video with detailed instructions on how to push the loops and form both stitches. Then Kirsten shows how to bind off the end of a scarf (the same way we used to go around the edge when making a potholder on a loom.) DONE! Kirsten then goes into more detailed stuff that is normally so complex with regular knitting. But the 2 basic stitches and the bind off are all a little girl really needs. Shown that, she can make her own scarf any way she wants.

My suggestion, if you get the loops yarn , (JoAnn Fabric has a better selection than Michaels right now. The Loops Boucle yarn has been discontinued there,) is to include a paper sheet of written, basic directions of the two stitches and the bind off, in case they don't have easy Internet access, WITH the these three links, so an adult can go over the 2 stitches with her and later the bind off.

This link has the easiest to follow written directions (with pics included.)

I'm excitedly waiting for JoAnn Fabric to have a good sale on it, :hyper: as I want to get 8 balls to make a soft, fuzzy afghan with the yarn, it works up so quickly. I may do one with this "basketweave" stitch in which one just criss-crosses every two front loops and just keeps going along in a straight line with the back loops. With regular knitting on needles this is complicated! :headache:

Boots - cool looking fuzzy boots if you got a shoe size

Agree with most mentioned but also - Cool things for her room - some cool boxes to hold all those crafts things. Lava lamps, decals that she can put on her walls and pull off and rearrange, cool pillows for her bed, jewelry holders, or a cork board type thing for her wall to display her arts/crafts.

Edit: I'm super impressed with how early you got your "girl" I don't think ours comes out for a few more weeks and it always feels super rushed to get everything turned in.

Thank you all for your thoughts. I really appreciate your ideas, especially about the books. I always tell my DH That I wish I could just take “ angel girl” shopping and let her try on and pick out her own clothes. But that’s not possible. We always get a girl every year and have the most fun buying her gifts. On Christmas morning, we always mention that we hope she had fun and was excited about what we got her. For whoever commented about us getting her early, I don’t know why. The “single angels” are available this week and the “ families” aren’t available yet. Every year, we get an angel girl first and we get a family a few weeks later.

Just to chime back in - My 9 year old who does not like unicorns and not a huge fan of reading started reading Phoebe and her Unicorn (mentioned above) last night and loves it.

My 9 year old is into scruffaloves (these stuffies that you wet and discover what animal they are) and hatchimal collectibles.

Oh and Land of Stories books
