Just in case anyone missed me :).

I've been away for a week in the Chicago area. My mom went in for pancreatic surgery last Friday for what's called a "Whipple" procedure. Only 10% of patients are even eligible for the surgery, so we were happy with that. Unfortunately, her blood pressure sank and her heart rate sky rocketed the night of the surgery and she was sedated for days and she has been in a coma since then. She is *just* waking up now but she still has a long way to go to recover fully. Anyway ... that's where I've been. Thank goodness for Priceline or I would go broke with hotel rooms.

Update! 8/26

My mom in now in rehab. She is still in the hospital, but in the rehab floor now. We looked at Rehab facilities on Sunday for her but her doctors wanted her to stay in the hospital. I am NOT complaining. The rehab floor has only 37 beds compared to 120-200 beds in the facilities I was looking at. Plus, her PT and OT sessions are one-on-one v/s the PT/OT working with a group of people at once. The nursing ratio is also much smaller in the hospital. Best yet, they are going to work her butt off :). Their goal is to get patients home ASAP and not hoover money from Medicaid.

I have been here for 3 long weeks. Priceline has been my friend, but even at $30-$32 per night it adds up. Plus, I have been eating take out for 3 weeks. I have been bleeding money and gaining weight. *sigh* I go home tomorrow and then off to CT for my nephew's Bar Mitzvah and then back home for a few days. I only live about 150 miles away so it's only about 3 hours when I need to come back to the Chicago area.

Update 9/8:

My mom is now home and so am I. I spent a lot of the last month tidying up my mother's house as she is a (to put it nicely) a pack rat. She now has enough space to get around in her walker. I also arranged for a bunch of "deferred maintenance" like having the toilet fixed, new appliances in the kitchen and she's having a new furnace delivered today. I'm exhausted. My sister, who lives near my mom, is taking the day-to-day care over now. My step-father can't drive so she has to drive my mom to all her appointments and get groceries, etc. Thanks to everyone for the prayers and good wishes .

I'll be praying that your mom makes a full recovery..

Hang in there. We're all praying for your mom (and you).

I am sorry to see the news, but glad everything went well and she was eligible for the whipple. My mom couldn't have that, actually I don't think it was an option back in 1997. I will keep you and your mom in my thoughts and prayers. Its a tough road to be on. I've been in your shoes, and I am here if you need to chat. Many hugs. Stay strong.

ETA: I should not have said everything went so well, I meant to say that I am glad she is coming around and pulled through! My choice of words initially was wrong so I needed to correct them.

:grouphug: Positive thoughts and prayers from Maryland that your dear Mom stabilizes and makes a full recovery. Godspeed ^i^

Sending  and positive vibes.

May your mother have a quick and full recovery.

Check with your your hospital liaison. When my FIL was hospitalized for an extended period they gave us a list of hotels in the area that worked with the hospital for these situations.

 Praying for your mom robin and you too, So sorry to hear she had such a rough time. I am sure it was so hard on you seeing her like that. My dh said he just sat and held my hand and prayed and cried all the time etc. I am glad you were able to be with her. Praying that she will heal and get stronger each day. I am sure some of the folks on the c and c board can help you out with any questions you have too. Blessings to you both in the days ahead.

Hi Robin,
Sorry to hear your mom is having a bad time. I had some bad days early after my whipple and I'm doing great now so it can be done. I had my Whipple on January 30, 2002 and here I am alive and a survivor seven and a half years later. Not braging; just saying it can be done. I'm an "old dude" too; in fact just had my big number 79. Please pass this message on to your mom; if I can do it so can she. Just keep the positive attitude and good stuff will happen. . .

Now this is something I LOVE to see!!!

Thanks for the good thoughts everyone! My mom is now off the ventilator (yay!) and the doctors say that she can get out of the bed and sit in a chair for a while. She can also start a liquid diet today. She *really* wants to get out of the hospital but first we have to work on getting her out of the ICU. I suspect that he will be moved to a regular bed soon too. I'm still in the Chicago area for at least the rest of the week.

Oh and the best piece of good news ... the pathology show NO CANCER!!

Just saw this thread...Good to see you here again!
My thoughts are with you and your family. :grouphug:
Sounds like things are looking up! That's great news!
Please continue to keep us posted when you can.

I hope your mom makes a full and speedy recovery. It's hard to see our moms suffer no matter what age we are.

So glad they ruled out cancer. DH had some pancreatic issues recently and pancreatic cancer is always a fear of mine as his dad and grandad had it but so far so good.
