An Invasion of a "STRANGER" Kind.... NEW THREAD IS UP!! Go Thee NOW!

Jiko is a wonderful restaurant and since we took the culinary tour at AKL I can pass this info on about its name: Jiko is a Swahili word which means "the cooking place". I would guess that it would also mean kitchen, but since an African hut in a kraal does not have a kitchen, I guess the they just call the place where they cook "the cooking place", i.e. jiko. :goodvibes

So it is as if they would call Kouzzina "Kouzzina - the kitchen"!

Thanks for the history of the name. :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

.. it is like a double negative... ummmm or a double positive in this case. ;)

First off, I have NOT a clue how I missed this post earlier! :guilty: I promise I'm not blowing you off!! ;)

Secondly, thanks so much for clearing that up. I was worried that they were going to start naming everything This or That: the Whatever Place.

The literal translation for the word kitchen here is very similar- The food house. Literally. The outhouse- I know you're dying to know this- the potty house. Xana (pronounced hah-nah) means room or house. THere are lots of xanas here- tea house, library= book house, etc...

Now, aren't we getting all grammatical? :lmao: you'd do well learning a second language. ;)

One thing I am not is grammatical!!!!! :lmao::lmao:

I didn't do it this time but I think in one of my TRs I put a disclaimer at the beginning that I was NOT a writer. If they were looking for writing skillz to look somewhere else. :rotfl2::rotfl2:

I tried to learn French in HS.. I remember absolutely 0 now. I should of taken Spanish. I could be using that now. :sad2:

I pretend to write. It's fun to see how many people I can fool.

I also pretend to speak Blankistani- I fool some of the people some of the time, and not all of the people none of the time.

Spanish is the way to go. And if that doesn't suit your fancy, Chinese will take you a long, long way in our future world.

It might be too early for me to decipher this! LOL :lmao::lmao:

The boards were quiet last night and this morning too. I wonder where everyone is?

Mel worked till 11:30pm last night and was out of the house at 6:15am this morning. She is only working till 1pm today (today was her scheduled day off) She'll be passed out on the couch early tonight. More DISing time for me. :rotfl:

Yeah, the last few days are slooooowwww... the regulars are ??? Glennbo's been gone for a week, Cynthia's having way more fun than any of us, and oodles of others just not around??

Ah well, it'll pick back up...

Agenda for my evening. Inventorying (have NO idea how to spell that) all 350 of our books so I can get them sold. Yeah. Not fun.

I'll manage to concoct some slop for dinner that involves ground beef, take the shortest shower in the history of womankind, and then maybe get back on.

Meantime, drum up some business for me! :rolleyes1

sorry, no business from me today, I am off in one hour to take the train to Nuremberg for a really long weekend: back at work at Tuesday!! :cool1: On Sunday we will celebrate my cousin's confirmation. Katharina will come down to Nuremberg for that as well since she this cousin's godmother.... :goodvibes So we have a big family get together. Should be fun! :goodvibes

Hey - I actually have been able to keep up with things a little slower lately!

The plans look good for Day 8!
I have to say I can't remember if you have any other Rope Drop days at MK but if not I highly recommend trying to make one. There is something just magical about opening the MK with the ceremony. We made one for the first time last trip and Jordan and I both loved it! (Other trips we either had an early ADR, did AM EMH, narrowly missed it, etc. - didn't want you thinking we are DIS slackers who don't know the go to the parks early rule :lmao:)

Have a good day everyone!

I totally agree with M:S:The Puking Place! I did that once and NEVER again! :lmao:

I've never been to Jiko. We're planning on Boma next trip, but I wonder if Jiko would be better? Hmmmmmm.....

Also, if you're not adept at languages, Spanish isn't any better. It's the other class I ever withdrew from at college because I was failing it! I stuck with my favorite dead language~ Latin! (I might not be able to talk to anybody, but I can read all the old inscriptions.)

Ooohh!! That sounds wonderful!!! I love big family things like this! And to get to be in Nuremberg with Katharina is even better! :goodvibes It's really going to be hard when you move back! How often will you get to see her after that?? Is she likely to come to you more, or you back up to Berlin??

Have a super-duper Loooooong weekend!

That IS one of the benefits fo the Boards being slower. I've actually been able to even keep up with Jordan's.

We have one more opportunity later, so if we don't make it to this one, it's no big deal. ;) Honestly, I can take or leave all the other ones (I've seen them all) but never have caught the MK one. The boats just weren't running early enough from the Fort. :headache: I will catch at least one this trip - I just know it!! :woohoo:

I don't get so sick- at least for very long anyway, but I do notice I'm not quite a tolerant as I get "older". (My neighbor called me fat just now, and I found more than one gray hair today- :rolleyes1)

Jiko's more expensive, but IMHO it has the better menu. At least from my uninitiated experience.

You get along with Spanish like I got along with Chem. Dropped that one like a hot potato, and out the window went my medical career.

Camille, I'm pretty sure Judy just puts some olive oil and maybe a little salt on them and I grill them in the grill basket. At least I hope it's olive oil -- they look kinda slimy when they get to me.

Sorry, I'm around....just been busy. (Shhh, I'm supposed to be working now, but no meetings until later.)

I won't tell a soul. :upsidedow

Oh, and on the asparagus...a few years ago I got the idea to use a peeler to peel the hard thick skin towards the bottom of the stalk so as not to waste so much of the asparagus because it was too "tough". Judy thought I was nuts until she saw somebody on the Food Network doing it....now she does it too. <taking bow> Thank you.

Ooohhh nicely done!!! Mike REFUSES to eat it if it's even remotely tough. If HE was the one who shopped for it, and knew how expensive it was, maybe he'd think twice before schlepping it out to the compost pile. :confused3

There's a technique to do it though, otherwise the stalk will just break off. I place the asparagus on a cutting board with the tender yummy part pointing left and the stalk-ending pointing right. I place my left hand on tender yummy part to hold the asparagus down (or I guess I should say "still", it's not like it's going to run around, like it should be sedated for this or something), put the peeler about halfway on the stalk and peel right, to the end of the stalk. Then I roll it with my left hand, peeling as it rolls.

What an informative thread you have going here. Where else can you get this kind of content?:rotfl2:

I love making rope drop just to be in the parks early but I agree the other shows are ok but not magical like the MK one. So gald to hear you think you will make one! :thumbsup2

BTW - I think I will bring Tate's AK outfit to DC if that is okay by you instead of shipping it to Blankistan.

Flossbolna just left for the train station so I step in... I don't know yet, how it will work out after the summer. But as our parents moved to Nuremberg last summer, I guess I'll travel more often south than Flossbolna north... But we already have a date fixed for her first visit after moving back :goodvibes

As we eat mainly white asparagus in Germany, and the white one you must peel, we have special asparagus peelers - don't you have them in the US? :confused3 And you are supposed to peel them lying on your arm... the asparagus, not yourself... Flossbolna did it yesterday, when we had 1.5 kilogram of asparagus for dinner :woohoo:

Hi Liesa - I was up so late the night before on here that I crashed early as well last night!

Can you believe - I have never been to a rope drop!! Not a morning person - but I guess I will have to put it on my to do list.
