Amtrak train info w/pics!All Aboard-Choo-choo!UPDATED

The lounge at Penn Station is really great. We use it every trip.

If you think of the expense of the roomette as the cost of 3 meals (for 2 people) and a hotel for the night, it's really quite a bargain. And it's so much more pleasant to be on the train than in an airport or on a plane.

Another really nice thing about the train (Shhh! Don't tell anyone! :)) is that when you check into your resort, it's almost guaranteed there won't be as many people in line at the check-in desk, since you're not arriving at the same time as the ME buses.

How do you get access to the lounge? That is one thing we did not like about Penn, we had no where to sit.

If you have a room or roomette booked, you show your ticket to the person at the desk in the lounge's entry, and you're in.

Here's Amtrak's official list of who can use the lounge:

Amtrak Guest Rewards members with a valid Select Plus or Select Executive member card.
Amtrak passengers with a same-day ticket (departing) or ticket receipt (arriving) in First Class or sleeping car accommodations.
United Club Members with a valid United Club Card may bring in two guests or their spouses and children under the age of 21. Additionally, United Global First or United BusinessFirst passengers with a flight coupon or boarding pass with a segment in United Global First or United BusinessFirst.
Complimentary ClubAcela Single-Day Pass holders. Same-day travel ticket not needed.
Private car owners/lessee and party between time of arrival and departure specified in the PNR. PNR number to be given to Club representative upon entry.

Aww.... wished I had known this in November! We booked a room and had an hour an a half layover at Penn Station. Penn Station was so dreary compared to North Station. We could not wait to get back on the train!

I will definitely look into this next time. Would make the layover so much more pleasant!

Where is the lounge located? Are there separate rest rooms there?

Is there a screen to watch for your trains arrival in the lounge?
I do not move very quickly and we barely made it down the stairs to our train after our track was posted.

Its right across from regular waiting room- i dint recall a board in there- they escort you down to your train when its time.

I don't know if I posted this before, but here's my hubby giving a tour of our Viewliner Roommette. This was on the Cardinal, but the rooms will be the same on the Silver Service to Florida.

These are the smallest rooms on the train. As was mentioned up there ^^^^^, the cost for a room is a single upcharge whether you have one or two people and it includes your meals in the dining car , 3 per day.

And this is a tour of the entire car with the three different types of rooms.

The lounge is very comfortable. They have plenty of seating, drinks, snacks, their own restrooms. We weren't quite sure where it was when we got there and asked. They directed right to it. When you go in you give your name to the person at the desk. They will take your information for the train and ask if you would like help to the train. When it was time to board, they called our name and a redcap brought us and all of our luggage to our room. It's a great way to wait for the next portion of the trip and not having to worry about missing the train. Have fun.

We just got back from our trip. We were a family of 5 going from Providence RI to Orlando. I have very mixed feelings about the train and am not sure I will do such a long trip again, or at least not with as many people. We had two roomettes each way and one coach. (My mother was added as a last minute and I didn't have enough rewards to get a roomette, but did for a free coach trip. My son and husband volunteered one each way to take the coach seat)

The roomettes were so very very small!! I would get a room next time. However when I booked online, they didn't give me that option. Lesson learned, call next time for reservations. Another lesson learned, check EVERYTHING that you can! We didn't the first part of the trip and regretted it big time!! Our porter realized this and grabbed the suit cases and checked them for us. Sleeping was very comfy though!! I was in the top bunk both ways and it was heaven!

The crew can make or break your experience!! We had the BEST crew on the way down and the WORST on the way back!! The first crew spoiled us with their fabulous personalities and senses of humor. The second crew had NO personalities for the most part and were border line rude!! In fact I got yelled at by one woman on the way home! I hadn't realized that they had "closed" one of the lounge cars and was trying to make my way from the sleepers to coach to bring my husband his winter coat. I was trying to text him to let him know that the doors were closed, and she came in and yelled at me that the car was closed. I explained to her that I didn't know and what I was trying to do. At first she was going to let me thru and then asked if I would have to come back. I said yes. She huffed at me and started yelling at me that she wasn't about to do that and that I would have to take it up with the conductor and he wouldn't like it, and etc. etc.! I hadn't even ASKED her to open the door! I had only told her what I was trying to do and was texting my husband to tell him he had to wait! She flipped out on me. The dining car crew on the way back....ugh! There was a young guy and he was nice and polite, but looked "afraid" for lack of a better word. The woman he was working with had NO personality and was awful, just awful!! She was very abrupt and seemed put out when you had questions. Both trips, both our porters and the dining crew, knew that we were a party of 5 and that we had two roomettes which is 4 people allowed to eat. They both said, it didn't matter which 4 ate, but the the 5th would have to pay. Well, a few times there were only 4 of us wanting to eat so the first crew would just put it all under the rooms. The woman on the second trip had a BIG problem with it and was not happy at all!! It wasn't like we were trying to get something for nothing! I paid for the meals. And I would have paid for the 5 person had we all wanted to eat, but my mother and daughter weren't hungry a couple of times.

I can not say enough though about the dining crew on the way down. We truly truly truly enjoyed them!! I know the guys name was George, but sadly forget the woman's name. They were just so funny and warm and you can tell they enjoyed their jobs! Even when we were just passing thru to get to the lounge cars they would tease my husband and talk to us. I will be emailing Amtrak to give them kudo's!

Now the part that really frustrated me. As we were on our way down, I received a text saying that our return NY to RI train was cancelled. They cancelled the whole train, due to the holiday. HELLO?? I bought these tickets back in Feb and am being told this now? They had to have KNOWN long before then that they were going to do that. It's not like the holiday was suddenly made up! Long story short, I had to g o thru 3 different people (person #1 thought it was weird that they just up and cancelled the train!) and it took 3 HOURS of my vacation for us to get results. They wanted me to take a 8 hour layover in DC, or a 7 in NY. Or pay another $800 and something to switch trains!! I couldn't have that long of a layover in JAN at night with a 72 year old woman!! It worked out that we had to leave our vacation early but they switched us with no extra $$ needed and a layover of about an hour, which is what we originally had.

The food was actually very good too! It's amazing too how the crew can get all those cups of coffee to people without spilling! Although George did say when he first started he lost a drink over some poor persons head! LOL! Luckily not coffee though!

I also highly recommend the red caps at Penn. It was so nice to let THEM lug everything and just bring us right to the lounge and then the track. We just had way to much stuff and to many people! They made it much nicer! On the way home, they even grabbed ours from baggage claim and then brought it right onto the train for us. Nice!

I don't think I would get my family back on the train though. It was way to long for them. I think I would do it again to go down, but to come home, not sure. At the end there, I just wanted to be done and home! :confused3

Hi,
I am trying to figure out which rooms would be best for five people.....It will be myself, my husband, my sister and my mother and father who will be going down. We will be visiting with family near NYC before we leave so we will be leaving from Penn Station, to Orlando. I'm trying to figure out what to book and if anyone has opinions that would be great. Trying to decide between three roomette's so we will hopefully all be pretty close. I would of liked to get two bedrooms but then someone would be left out, and that wouldn't be too nice lol. Definitely want rooms though, roomette or bedroom, not seats. Even with the roomette's someone will be by themselves but since they are close, people can swap to talk etc....
Anyone travel with five people, what did you book? Any opinions welcome!
Thanks.

with that many your cheapest option would be the 3 roomettes. You can request them next to each other-I get 2 across from each other

I was beginning to think that would be the best option, I saw on the Amtrak site you can call them to make a reservation for three in a bedroom for two small adults on the bottom bed, but I don't see that being too comfortable lol. Us girls are all small, but I don't think that would be small enough lol. Thanks, I think I will get the three roomettes.

10 years ago my family of four got a bedroom. At the time we had a 4 year old and a 7 year old. They shared the upper bunk and my husband and I slept in the lower bunk without a problem. The lower bunk in the bedroom is about the size of a double bed which is what we slept in at home at the time. It worked well for us. Now that our girls are bigger we get two roomettes across from each other and sometimes it ends up with all four of us being in one roomette playing a game, so you can tell that we don't mind close quarters. :)

Now i'm starting to think about getting two bedrooms lol, I wouldn't mind being close on the bottom bunk, I didn't realize it could fit two adults without too much problem........i'll have to think about it now. Thank you for your input!

You have to be friendly with the person you are sharing the bottom bunk with, but my husband and I are on good terms so it worked. ;)

Has anyone taken coach seats from NYC to Orlando? I would much rather take a roomette, but with a kind of short notice trip with a friend it would be much cheaper just taking the coach seats the whole way. Are there any differences in the coach seats on this train from regular coach seats such as are they a little bigger or recline more being a longer trip?
I saw a video showing coach seats and they looked like they had a lot more leg room then the coach seats from Albany, NY to NYC but it didn't say what train. Anyone have anymore info or what your experience taking coach for such a long trip?
Thanks!

Hi. Ill be in a roomette in September but Im boarding in Newark, NJ. Will I have a lounge to wait? I boarded a roomette last year in Newark and waiting for the train on the platform wasnt fun and neither is walking through Newark Penn.

No lounge in Newark, sorry you're stuck waiting with the coach passengers and the commuters. Newark Penn Station isn't that bad. Now Broad Street Station, that's a different story.

Do you mind if I ask why you're not going into Manhattan? When we took the train to DC it was the same price NYP or NWK. From here NJTransit train is the same price to either Newark Penn or NY Penn too.

It will be either my husband or sister that I will share the bottom with, so I think it will be fine lol. Thanks for all the help!:)

Posted this on it's own thread with no replies yet so I figured I would ask here as well.
Wondering if anyone has experience with the long distance coach seats compared to the roomettes? We are planning on going to Disney next year with 4 adults. I happened to see a video of the coach seats on the long distance train and they do look pretty roomy. I was wondering how the roomettes were with 2 adults in each. Are the seats as comfortable as the coach seats or do you feel more boxed in?
One plus is the privacy but I was also interested in the comfort level.

Does anyone happen to know the general car layout of the train from NY to Florida - 91 Silver Star and 97 Silver Meteor? I was wondering what order the cars are in. I believe you'll have the engine first but then what order are they in? Coach, dining then sleeper?
